If someone were looking for a place to live and there criteria were -

”I’m looking for somewhere run down with a few ropey pubs”

LIGHTHEARTED

What’s your budget and how many bedrooms? You live alone presumably?

BologneseGurl · 10/08/2025 08:57

SomeOfTheTrouble · 10/08/2025 08:51

The place I grew up in actually still has loads of ‘traditional’ pubs. Most of them don’t take card payments. Sticky carpets that smell of stale beer, dart board and pool table. The rest of the village is quite gentrified though! It’s a weird mix of families who have lived there for generations and newcomers who have moved in for the good transport links and upmarket new builds.

Ah those pubs sound great 😊

I know what you mean, I love an old man's pub.

i live alone - budget - well tbh budget isn’t relevant in the sense that it’s nostalgia what drive this thread !!

budget - potential up to 600K though

No one is taking it seriously OP

We are just…. Baffled

Don’t mind me lol it was meant to be lighthearted as I’m a bit nostalgic for the area I lived in mid- late 2000s

It would definitely be unMumsnetty if you moved to an area like that, put a hot tub in the back garden, and sat in it drinking rum and cokes, snacking on crisps and enjoying a good vape. For extra unMumsnet points you could also invite your mother-in-law round for a chat and a laugh.

Then actually opening your front door when you hear the doorbell would put you in the gold medal position in the anti-MN Olympics.

treesarealive · 10/08/2025 08:33

@BologneseGurl I get you! When it’s where you grew up, it’s easy to feel nostalgic for a place even if the place was run down.

Yes!! I lived there 2005-2008

Roothewheel · 10/08/2025 09:02

I think there’s probably a serious thread underpinning this

Folkestone in Kent, or kemsley in sittingbourne are both like this...

Megifer · 10/08/2025 09:03

This sounds like where i live 🤣

£600k would get you 2 houses and change. I had a school pal who's parents managed, somehow, to get 2 semi detached next door and they knocked them through into 1. Was the most bizarre mansion right in the middle of a sink estate 😂

Blingismything · 10/08/2025 09:04

Aldershot

Twistedfirestarters · 10/08/2025 08:33

I mean, it's not exactly a Mumsnet thing to not actively seek out a run down area to live in. Especially for reasons of 'nostalgia'.

I know .. it would probably be different actually getting down to every day life there once the novelty had worn off

Literally anywhere in the country - likely a few streets away from the main drag or in a nearby town to the main town.

I assume by ropey you mean sticky carpets, live karaoke and a meat raffle (all of which I see as hallmarks of a much loved community space). Has to be an independent rather than a chain. Ideally has a quiz where as a new timer you will likely get verbally abused (in good humour) if you score either v well or v badly.

Haha yes would poss be my definition of ropey lol!!

WonderingWanda · 10/08/2025 09:09

Plymouth or Bristol, great places to live but a bit rough around the edges. Still possible to nab a doer upper bargain house wise.

Ah, you had the thread a couple of weeks ago about Foord and how Folkestone has changed.

The East Kent Arms on the High Street is still quite like that. Probably the Black Bull as well. Anywhere else central or near the harbour arm is entirely gentrified.

Leyton and Walthamstow 25 years ago.

Now smarter.

Ah 2 areas I’m not familiar with

OP posts:

So the criteria for the estate agent is easy “area must be a shit hole”.
