Eating takeaway pizza at the table

Dd, 7 and her friend have had a brilliant afternoon-swimming in the pool, playing with toys, painting and so on. Dd asked if we could have takeaway pizza for dinner. Dh went to pick it up, the kids got dry and put a film on, comfy on the sofa. They were laughing having lots of fun and excited when the pizza arrived.
Dh then said to come and sit at the dining table to eat it, instead of sat on the sofa continuing their film. He then proceeded to tell Dd to eat properly and not rush, talk with her mouth full
and on and on. Brought the whole fun mood down.

Aibu to think the whole point of getting takeaway pizza is to eat it on your lap watching something and to relax?

I don’t know - it depends how messy they are 🤷🏼‍♀️😆 we have just got a new sofa so wouldn’t let mine eat pizza on it! What I do is put a blanket or something on the floor and have pizza picnics.

babasaclover · 09/08/2025 20:01

He’s a mood hoover. I also have one so feel your pain 😭

QuizzlyBears · 09/08/2025 20:02

What do you normally do when you order takeout pizza in your family?

tuvamoodyson · 09/08/2025 20:03

We eat at the table 🤷🏼‍♀️ makes no difference whether it would be a pizza or a 3 course meal!

CosyMintFish · 09/08/2025 20:05

We eat at the table. It’s culturally important to us. Sure, we sometimes have packed lunch or we’re camping, but if we are at home we sit and share a meal together.

TimetoGetUpNow · 09/08/2025 20:06

We eat all meals at the table, except takeaway pizza. Which we eat on tablecloths on the living room floor (well DH and I sit on the sofa) whilst watching a movie. I don’t trust my teenage boys to eat pizza on my sofa, and I definitely would not trust 7 year olds.

Slobberchops1 · 09/08/2025 20:07

i wouldn’t allow food to eaten on the sofa . We do have a little table I get out occasionally for the kids to eat at in front of the telly

TeenLifeMum · 09/08/2025 20:09

At 7 mine would have eaten at the table then back to the tv. Helpful to break up a film for a 7yo too. I don’t get the issue but I also don’t see eating at the table to be a non fun thing.

PluckyChancer · 09/08/2025 20:12

I only allowed DS to eat food whilst sitting on the sofa when he was about 14. Until then, it was too risky as he has dyspraxia and liable to tip the lot.

As they’re still quite young, I wouldn’t be bothered about normal table manners and I’d let them eat out of the pizza boxes, But whilst sat at the table.

Sprig1 · 09/08/2025 20:17

We eat ours at the table.

Pineapplewaves · 09/08/2025 20:18

My DC are allowed to eat on the sofa because it’s on its last legs and heading to the dump. When we get a new one there will be no eating and drinking on it - so it depends if eating on the sofa is normal for your family, whether your DD and her friend can eat nicely or whether they are likely to smear pizza everywhere….

Plastictreees · 09/08/2025 20:18

We eat at the table - less mess!

Hoppinggreen · 09/08/2025 20:21

We don't allow food in the lounge beyond a biscuit or similar

GrumpyOldCrone · 09/08/2025 20:21

I grew up eating at the table, I married a man who grew up eating at the table, and we brought up the children (now in their 20s) to eat at the table. However, there are good reasons for occasional exceptions, and takeaway pizza while watching a movie is one of them, in my opinion. I think it’s a bit too rigid to insist on proper table manners at every single meal.

mindutopia · 09/08/2025 20:22

I’ve never eaten a takeaway on the sofa, sorry. We don’t eat any meals in the lounge. At most, we might go in the garden and have a picnic. To me, the point of a takeaway is not have to cook. I definitely would have asked them to sit at the table to eat.

Notmyreality · 09/08/2025 20:26

Of course you eat the pizza on the sofa watching the movie that’s the whole point.
Honestly some people have no clue how to loosen up.

Surprised he didn’t say use knives and forks.

MassiveOvaryaction · 09/08/2025 20:27

As a treat for my own 7yo maybe but a gang of hyper ones absolutely not!

Would be at the table here. Short break from the film then back to it won't do them any harm (mind you I'm old enough to remember the intermission in the cinema 👵🏻😂).

Growlybear83 · 09/08/2025 20:28

I’d never have let seven year olds eat pizza on the sofa. We’ve always eaten all meals at a table.

LightDrizzle · 09/08/2025 20:29

Team table here. Even if you know your own daughter can eat a pizza without bits sliding off, you can’t know her friend can. Oily, tomatoey, pizza topping is gifted with staining superpowers.

Anyway, I think a good parenting rule of thumb is that where there is a difference of opinion the least permissive parent gets backed up. That’s assuming you wouldn’t have children with a christian fundamentalist if you are a liberal feminist.

Sounds like he was a bit of a fun sponge

Doobeedoobeedoobee · 09/08/2025 20:29

Sofa house here!

MrsKeats · 09/08/2025 20:30

All food at the table in my house.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 09/08/2025 20:32

Depends on your usual house rules, most couples have worked out their whether they allow eating on the couch or not long before this age! Nothing wrong with either way.

TheNightingalesStarling · 09/08/2025 20:32

Sounds perfect for a carpet picnic... easy wash blanket down, film can continue, mess easily cleared away on seconds.

Shouldveknownbetter · 09/08/2025 20:38

I'm reading this while sat at my table eating the remainder of last night's takeaway pizza (which was also eaten at the table)!
