Eating takeaway pizza at the table

Dd, 7 and her friend have had a brilliant afternoon-swimming in the pool, playing with toys, painting and so on. Dd asked if we could have takeaway pizza for dinner. Dh went to pick it up, the kids got dry and put a film on, comfy on the sofa. They were laughing having lots of fun and excited when the pizza arrived.
Dh then said to come and sit at the dining table to eat it, instead of sat on the sofa continuing their film. He then proceeded to tell Dd to eat properly and not rush, talk with her mouth full
and on and on. Brought the whole fun mood down.

Aibu to think the whole point of getting takeaway pizza is to eat it on your lap watching something and to relax?

I wouldn’t want excitable kids eating messy pizza on my sofa. At least sitting at table it’s not so bad if they start chucking it at each other

Ifailed · 09/08/2025 20:42

Eat at the table with crockery and cutlery.

Eat on the floor like a dog.

GreenOtter · 09/08/2025 20:43

I would have let the kids eat in front of the tv because that’s where they were set up. Going formally to the table for a pizza party with a friend, and then bringing up table manners would have been a mood killer.

I would have set up a picnic rug on the floor as a middle ground if the kids are messy eaters.

What does this even mean? Take away pizza requires no crockery or cutlery and the argument was about the sofa…

Pizza isn't one of the least messy foods. Why would they be throwing food at each other?

It’s what kids do 🤷‍♀️

I don’t think he was wrong but I’m super confused as to why you don’t have house rules for this sort of thing. What normally happens and is this unusually rigid?

we don’t let the kids eat on the sofa as I love our sofa. But we have a small table for the kids in the living room that they use sometimes.

Dogonthephone · 09/08/2025 21:01

Kids eat well, it was in boxes and not particularly messy, I have throws over the sofa I can wash…Life’s too short, I eat lots sat on my sofa watching tv at night

We don’t really have rules for eating, we sit at the table sometimes but usually on our laps or in the garden (at a table-live in a hot place) but I can’t remember us eating pizza at the table lots before

My DH thinks pizza is a table food too. Totally misses half the joy. Sometimes I indulge him, sometimes we insist on the sofa. He won’t join us. He absolutely refuses to eat in the sofa. He will go eat in his home office if we won’t join him at the table.

AffableApple · 09/08/2025 21:06

Surely this is why you have wipeable sofas with kids? Or a big washable throw?

What do I know, currently eating takeaway pizza in a hotel bed...

itsgettingweird · 09/08/2025 21:09

I have throws on my sofa - for the exact reason that if eating on it it means they can be chucked in the wash and sofa cushions are saved!

We eat on lap trays on sofa or at the table here. Just 2 of us.

We have been known to sit at the take with some meals (pizza/wraps) and play uno etc too.

ots the one area where I think think have the most self imposed rules - dinner time - but I’d have been like you and assumed they’d eat it out the box on the sofa whilst watching the film.

youreactinglikeafunmum · 09/08/2025 21:17

Yanbu tbh

Then again, i did make dd(6) eat a packet of wotsits over the bin yesterday after I spent the entire morning vacuuming up her mess

Unless he's spent that much time cleaning, he should've just let her and her friend eat in front of the TV

PInkyStarfish · 09/08/2025 21:18

Young children eating pizza whilst sitting on a sofa is slovenly.

I’m with your husband on this.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 09/08/2025 21:18

NO!

They should eat it in the garden, (even if it is raining, as it is character building.)

And anyway who wants the smell of that 'fast food stuff' in the house, being absorbed into the replica Williams Morris wall paper and Cath Kidson cushions?

I know certainly don't !!!

Sera1989 · 09/08/2025 21:20

I can understand why people (including me) wouldn’t want to get pizza on the sofa. But you have throws, and an occasional treat in front of the TV can be very fun for kids. I fondly remember eating pizza and ice cream with a movie on while sat in sleeping bags on the living room floor during sleepovers. I think it’s good generally to eat nicely at the table as a family but nothing wrong with relaxing the rules every now and then. The telling off probably wasn’t necessary as she was just excited, except for not talking with mouth full which is basic manners

We did this once - drunk - took a pizza back to the hotel and ate in bed - next morning there was pizza all over the white bedding. Think we must have dropped more than we actually ate 😬 luckily we never got charged for it

He needs to take the stick out of his arse. Of course you eat pizza on the sofa.

Cutleryclaire · 09/08/2025 21:22

Would be tv on pause and up to the table here. But would be relaxed about rushing and giddiness.

nottoplan · 09/08/2025 21:22

All food at the table
all food with knife and fork

No one eats pizza with a knife and fork.

pushthebuttonnn · 09/08/2025 21:25

Ours usually eat take away at the coffee table in the living room 🤗

MagnificentBastard · 09/08/2025 21:28

We wouldn’t have let kids of this age eat on the sofa. Once they were teens, yes.

It’s really no problem to sit at the table, eat and then go back to the film or whatever.

5128gap · 09/08/2025 21:31

As part of a relaxed post swim movie night I'd expect to eat in front of the TV. I also don't love picking children up on non urgent issues of manners or minor less than perfect behaviour in front of their friends. It embarrasses the child and risks the friend thinking you're overly strict and being uncomfortable in your home.
