To judge people who still use Twitter/X?

Okay, so if your job involves having to use Twitter/X regularly, I get it. But I generally don't understand why so many people still use that platform?

It's very well known what an utterly toxic cesspool it has become under Musk's ownership, being virtually unrecognisable now from the site's heyday in the early 2010s. And there have been repeated stories about this stupid Grok AI thing being generally awful too - today in the news: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwye62e1ndjo

Only a few weeks ago, there was the story about the same thing spewing out anti-semitic bile uncontrolled. That's before we even cover all the disinformation being spread on there, often by Musk himself!

Full disclosure, I deleted my account after Musk's Hitler salutes earlier this year, and now when I hear of someone I know who still uses the site, I can't help but judge them for it. I think either they're tacitly supporting Musk, or care more about their number of followers to have no qualms about still being on such an awful, vile platform.

Re: mentions of Bluesky - where did I mention that in my post? I didn't. My post was simply about Twitter.

Feel free to use it if you want, but I'm not sure what you get from continuing to support a platform that is renowned for being the domain of racists, bigots and all manner of other deeply unpleasant individuals.

There are still good people on there, trying to counteract the hate, though.

Twitter is literally what you choose to make it, you choose who to follow, how visible you are and who to block/mute etc. With regs to the so called 'nazi' salute, you saw what you wanted to see. Agreed though re. the adult AI content, that shouldn't be doable.

Inchworms · 09/08/2025 20:05

Related / unrelated, TikTok did a very weird thing when it took a guess at who I was.

I got an account but follow nobody, watch nothing, it opens links people send me and that’s it. The links I get sent are normally dog related from a younger relative, sometimes pop culture. Nothing political, all mainstream cute/funnies.

my Home Screen for TikTok is wall to wall anti immgration, pro white Britain, tommy robinson, other influencers in that arena - there’s a guy with a load of tats? Don’t know him but he seems famous. Also a LOT of anti cop content but not ACAB, they’d spit on ACAB, it’s like… far right anti cop. Anti bailiff in a big way, lot of videos explaining your rights (which is good!). Anti government quite agressively. gifs of Keir starmer getting shot. White men talking to camera about how ‘they’re’ after you. Paranoid. Masculine. Violent.

It’s very strange and nobody I know believes it until I show them. obvs I know it EXISTS but not at all to this degree, it’s like a whole other internet.

it really changed how I think about social media. I knew, but it made me very aware of how much the internet already knows about me and how what I’m normally seeing tallies with that to the exclusion of all else, so that I don’t even know anything else exists. I don’t know how TikTok got it so wrong but I’m glad in a way.

It’s part of why I came back to mumsnet. I deleted twitter cos I just loaaaathe that dude. But I don’t want to only live in my internet land that agrees with me

It's very kind of you to give me permission to use a social media platform. Thanks

Zov · 09/08/2025 20:20

I don't use it now. Haven't for about a year or so. It's a far left cesspit, and massively anti-women. The way they talk about JK Rowling, put me off Twitter/X. It's full of self righteous, woke, social justice warriors... I despise most people on there now. And the ones who aren't woke and far left, are very far right, which is just as bad.

There’s quite a lot of nasty bigotry, racism, benefits bashing, fat shaming, ableism and judgemental arseholery right here on Mumsnet. It’s the same everywhere. Some places are worse than others, but nowhere is perfect. I don’t use X but couldn’t care less who else does. Nothing to do with me.

Brefugee · 09/08/2025 20:35

Bluesky is a circle jerk of wokeness and anti woman sentiment in a lot of ways. I miss most of that now by being careful who i follow, who i block and only using the "following" option. Every day i retweet/repost what the Auschwitz Memorial posts on TwiX - as long as they are they are there i will amplify them
I follow (and am followed by) several anti-FGM accounts, and same: i rt everything they post
likewise women's organisations from Afghanistan

There are fun hashtag games
There are great cat pictures
i don't pay for premium, i don't click on ads and i tend not to buy from people who advertise there.

I don't see anti-semitic shite on TwiX because i am careful about who i follow, what i click and who i block.

The algorithm gives you what you want. Judge away, i don't give a shiny shite. I judge you for being judgy, OP.

JHound · 09/08/2025 21:10

Dangermoo · 09/08/2025 18:12

The fact that the OP used the arrogant term "judge". So freedom of speech goes out the window, when it doesn't sit with her own opinions. George Orwell and 1984 called.

Her judging people does not impede on their free speech.

My source is ‘live tv’.

Do your own googling.

So safe to assume it was not true.

Her judging people - for exercising free speech - is an own goal in the lefty field. The left tell us they are tolerant and the 'far' right are bigots. Hmmm

miraxxx · 09/08/2025 21:21

I have had a twitter account from 2008 and it has always been called "toxic". I actually didnt use it for the first couple of years. But it is an authentic platform for politics and discussing topical issues - tiktok, FB, insta and bloody fucking Reddit are rubbish compared to it. Twitter was terrible before Musk with its shadowbanning and censorship. Musk has both liberated it and made it worse by letting fake accounts and bots run riot. So the block and mute buttons really need to be put to use. I have bloosky and find it an insufferable site. I would rather know what bad thoughts the fascists, nazis, racists et al are thinking than live in a virtue signalling fake bubble with fellow scolds.

Who are “the left”? And what are they supposed to be tolerant of? I defy anyone to be tolerant of things they find abhorrent.

The left have moved to Bluesky. It's called an echo chamber.

@CircusofPuffins you could say similar about the vipers on mumsnet etc and the various mix of information. all platforms need critical thinking when using them,

X has not been the same since Musk sacked the TRA group using their position to ban anyone who didn't agree with them.

Oh wait. That's a good thing.

And just in case anyone doesn't know, the Nazi salute was bullshit from the kind of people who think CERN's logo means they are aligned with Satan and that vaccines have mind control chips in.

Judge hard. Judge every minute of the day if you like, but that goes in both directions.

.

amillionandone · 09/08/2025 22:40

Judge away! You can think what you like, the same as everyone else, including people who continue to use Twitter /X.

One good thing about X is that you can easily, simply, and instantly control who you follow and what you see. Use it for news, work, celebrity gossip, or simply videos and photos of adorable animals. Most of the accounts I follow are primarily mood lifters. Humour and animals.

Meh, not arsed about your judgement. I’m on it partly for the feminist content and partly because there’s a good local community where I am, largely free of the knuckle draggers that haunt local Facebook pages. I’m certainly not in agreement with Musk but nor do I think my absence would worry him. If I avoided all organisations and businesses with owners I disagree with I’d never achieve a thing.
