To judge people who still use Twitter/X?

Okay, so if your job involves having to use Twitter/X regularly, I get it. But I generally don't understand why so many people still use that platform?

It's very well known what an utterly toxic cesspool it has become under Musk's ownership, being virtually unrecognisable now from the site's heyday in the early 2010s. And there have been repeated stories about this stupid Grok AI thing being generally awful too - today in the news: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwye62e1ndjo

Only a few weeks ago, there was the story about the same thing spewing out anti-semitic bile uncontrolled. That's before we even cover all the disinformation being spread on there, often by Musk himself!

Full disclosure, I deleted my account after Musk's Hitler salutes earlier this year, and now when I hear of someone I know who still uses the site, I can't help but judge them for it. I think either they're tacitly supporting Musk, or care more about their number of followers to have no qualms about still being on such an awful, vile platform.

The internet as a whole has loads of shite on it, but it's how you use it surely? I never got on with Twitter so have never been on it, but i wouldn't judge someone just because they were. I don't think most people are using or not using SM based on who owns the platform, they just use it if they like it.

BIossomtoes · 09/08/2025 16:19

I don’t use Bluesky but I’ve seen posts of death and rape threats to women on there.

How did you manage that if you don’t use it?

Berlinlover · 09/08/2025 16:20

I still use X. My interests are travel and soap operas (amongst other things).

PandoraSocks · 09/08/2025 16:23

I find it quite informative.

You see Farage or Yaxley-Lennon pop up pushing a narrative then Surprise! a thread about it pops up here.

Also it can still be very funny.

yellowingdoors · 09/08/2025 16:28

There’s some great X accounts. Like any other social media platform, you only get toxic sludge if you go looking for toxic sludge.

Dingledongledell · 09/08/2025 16:36

Not sure what I’d have done a few weeks ago without Ttibunal Tweets? Is the staggering level of bullying and discrimination meted out to Sandie Peggie by her employer NHS Fife and Dr Upton just swept under the carpet in blue sky? I’d imagine so.

PluckyChancer · 09/08/2025 16:39

Judge away although I’ve never used it as I’ve no idea how it works. I prefer to chat to real life friends. 🤷🏻‍♀️

porridgecake · 09/08/2025 16:41

Free speech is a double edged sword.

OxfordInkling · 09/08/2025 16:43

Even CNN were forced to admit that Twitter is actually representative of the population and has an even balance (unlike the echo chambers that the lefties stropped off to, such as Bluesky).

Account734 · 09/08/2025 16:53

I like X, free speech is allowed. I have never seen anything pornographic on there because that's not something I wouldn't be interested in. It's a great place to hear what's happening regarding real women's rights.

You judge away, I'll judge you for your ignorance and inability to use a platform specifically for the information that serves you.

Sarah2891 · 09/08/2025 16:55

I see more toxic stuff in the comments on Facebook.
Not going to judge what apps people use. All social media can include horrible content.

Jamesblonde2 · 09/08/2025 16:58

Judge away. I use it for what the mainstream news decides not to report. I’m intelligent enough to use my own judgement on the veracity of the article. It’s called being open minded.

I would imagine because people post them elsewhere. Also she said “I don’t use Bluesky” not “I’ve never been on Bluesky”.

If you’ve left a particular platform how do you know who is or isn’t still using it; unless you pop back on the regular for a look?

Leave or don’t. I seriously doubt anyone cares.

Agree with this. Facebook comments are awful.

Yep I’ve seen BlueSky stuff on here, incredibly toxic included

OonaStubbs · 09/08/2025 14:59

Surely it's only toxic for users who follow toxic people?

You would think that! I was so shocked at what kept coming up on my feed. People I had never heard of spewing hate or fake news. I had to leave.

I can see how it can warp people’s opinions

It’s for the person making a claim to substantiate it.

Cynic17 · 09/08/2025 17:30

To be fair, OP, it depends who you follow. My feed is full of sport, theatre, art and history - all good wholesome stuff, and no politics. Nothing anti-Semitic, because if I saw anything like that I would unfollow/block immediately.
What we see is within our control, OP, and we need to take responsibility for our own feeds, as well as whatever we post.

You mean like the vast majority of X users? 😂

MN isn't your business, yet you're here.
