I have moved back to my hometown…I went for a walk after dinner and I just fell in love all over again.
I walked out of my estate and made my way down to the end section of town, past the main hotel and b&b’s. There was a coach of people arriving at the hotel and the smell of dinner was in the air. The hustle and bustle was lovely.
I then passed through a mix of restaurants with more wonderful smells, all full with people sitting inside and out. It smelled amazing!!
Next was the amusement park and arcades, the music, the chiming sounds, the people laughing etc, the smell of cotton candy, and chocolate donuts.
Down along the prom where I passed lots of families some local and others on holiday, some eating fish and chips, others out for a walk, walking with families and their dogs etc.
the beach had people walking too, further out was a large group of people on a surf lesson.
…at the end of the prom there’s a row of cafes, restaurants and shops. People were sitting having a coffee, others coming back from a swim and dressed in dry robes.
The skate park was full of kids out practicing and having fun.
Up next was the mobile home holiday park, lots of families sitting out and kids out on their bikes and in the park.
After that was a long stretch that looked out over the strand and across to the next headland covered in fields. It was just beautiful 🙌
Back up around and to my estate. Just perfect!
I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I just felt so happy looking at everyone and everything around me, I thought it would be nice to have an appreciation thread. There’s enough negativity around at the moment.
please share your joys big or small 🥰

I love my village, it's by the sea and the village has lots of listed buildings , i.e. 16th and 17th century. There's walks by the sea and also round fields and we have a great ice cream shop that people come for miles to taste. The queues are regularly up the street for the ice cream .
We have 6 cafes and restaurants,an old harbour that has been in a TV drama too .
It's a friendly place, I love it .

In Ireland yes.

Newquay? 😅 Sounds so vibrant. People and children playing out and about, businesses booming. How it should be!

There's a Gregg's opening at the top of the road which I'm more excited about than I should be 🤣

Dox9 · 07/08/2025 22:53

Tramore?

I love where I live. Its a sprawling housing estate, it doesn't sound very interesting with all the identical houses. There are cycle paths everywhere and well maintained paths (it's newish). A little shopping street with a shop, cafe, nursery, laundry gym, pub etc. My kids school is there too so no commute and it's lovely to see all the kids walk to school. We have lovely neighbours and it's very safe, the kids have free reign within the development and they have little areas they hang out at that they name - The big tree, the old ditch, the hill, the big green etc. Teens mostly congregate around the shop area. It's friendly and safe.

We are just off a main road with a west / east exit onto a city ring road within minutes. Our city is about 30 mins by bus, less than 20 by car. Beaches are 20 min away the other way. A golf course and sports club is at the opposite end of the estate, next to this beautiful ancient woods and a river. We are just up the hill from a suburban village with everything we could need. My kids recently told me they couldn't think of a better place to grow up.

Is it PortStewart?

Portstewart is my hometown 🙂 no amusement park though, nor arcades any more. Reading the OP I straight away thought of Portrush (where we moved back to just before Covid after many years away and absolutely love) as it has arcades, Curry's (forever Barry's to me!), plus hotels/b&bs in the town centre, the skate area, the prom along the West Strand where they do surf lessons, then the view across the East Strand towards the Dunluce headland. Obviously it's not but sounds like a very similar place!

VintageMarket · 08/08/2025 10:23

@Vetoncall I think I must be mixing the two place up into one in my mind. What a wonderful part of the world you live in.

beguilingeyes · 08/08/2025 10:53

I love where I live too, and I'm very much a city girl. I live in Zone 3 London. I can be in Oxford Circus in 40 minutes but we have a beautiful house with a big garden full of trees. Epping Forest is minutes away.
i love the hustle and bustle and I never want to leave.

Do they say cotton candy in Ireland rather than candy floss? It made me a bit suspicious about who/what wrote the post.

I say cotton candy, I have some American family, well I use both but cotton candy came out while I was typing so I went with that 🤣

Saw a recent novel set in Tramore - afraid I can't remember author or title.

But whats it like in winter?

Well, it’s all pretty much the same except the amusement park closes. But people still eat out and people still surf and wind surf etc. people tend to swim year round here too.

There's an interview with the author on the Dubray books website.

SixtySomething · 09/08/2025 22:58

So is this post a covert advertisement for the novel?
