AIBU to think we don't need to tell the insurer about daughter learning to drive?

Hi All,
My daughter has just started learning to drive and we're now doing some practice sessions in our car. She's got her provisional licence and everything, and I'm sitting with her, but we haven't told our car insurance company. I'm thinking, she's not the main driver, it's just a bit of practice with me supervising, so surely we don't need to add her as a named driver?
I've heard some people say you need special learner insurance or to add them to your policy, but it feels a bit OTT for just a few supervised drives. I'm a bit worried about the premium shooting up, to be honest!
Am I being unreasonable to think we can just carry on as we are, or do we really need to contact our insurer? Does anyone have any experience with this? Any advice on what to do would be amazing, as I'm totally clueless about all this.
Thanks in advance!

What about if she scrapes the car and it costs say £3,000 to fix? Who is going to pay for that? You must tell the insurance company or else they may declare your insurance invalid. Just like if someone had some impediment that could affect their driving, the insurance needs to know.

Catcatcat111 · 07/08/2025 12:48

Oh my gosh, this can’t be real. A reverse? Must be one of the stupidest posts I’ve read on here.

theDudesmummy · 07/08/2025 12:48

I haven't rtft but really? You are allowing/encouraging you daughter to break the law? And admitting it on the internet (albeit anonymously). What planet are you on? She will get a criminal record if caught.

TimeForABreak4 · 07/08/2025 12:49

Naaa don't need to add a learner driver who has no experience driving and has a higher likelihood of crashing.. You just do what you want 🙄

Elphamouche · 07/08/2025 12:51

You are absolutely ridiculous.

This has to be a wind up or you're a colossal idiot.

Before I returned to paid employment I would have thought exactly as you but I have met some people who have a string of qualifications under their belt who don’t understand basic life stuff. Even things you would think are common sense and things like this which is something you could work out for yourself if you really thought about the What Ifs

Mademetoxic · 07/08/2025 12:53

You'll be in for a shock when she passes and finds out how much her real insurance will be!

mnhq can delete anything that you report - if you think it’s against talk guidelines, then report it.

personally I think it’s a wind up thread so I’ve reported it.

I hope they don't delete it before the poll gets to 1000 to 0. I've never seen anything like it. Normally at least someone throws in a cheeky YANBU whatever the topic.

Missingducks · 07/08/2025 12:59

She is driving and needs to be insured. At the moment your own is invalid if she is driving with your supervision. Yes it is likely to cost more.

KidsDoBetter · 07/08/2025 12:59

Hilarious that op is in charge of both a moving vehicle and at least one human child 😂

Doristheclitoris · 07/08/2025 13:00

Surely nobody thinks like this.

HelpMeGetThrough · 07/08/2025 13:00

Has anyone responded “Have you asked ChatGPT” yet?

Thats usually the response these days.

Norwegianwood35 · 07/08/2025 13:00

I seriously cannot believe you even need to ask this! She is uninsured. She will end up with an IN10 endorsement on her licence along with a fine, and you will end up with a fine too.

Im honestly gobsmacked you had to ask this question.

Chonk · 07/08/2025 13:01

First unanimous response I've seen on here, with almost a 1,000 votes too.

I think Google or engage your brain might also cover it ….

junkmaail · 07/08/2025 13:02

Yea I’m sure if she crashes into someone else they won’t care that she’s not insured…

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/08/2025 13:03

Op, I think you have it loud and clear now that you need to put her on the insurance and it’s illegal not to. If you don’t want to do this you can’t take her out - simples.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 07/08/2025 13:03

I'm oretty sure it's you that gets screwed over if she is a learner and your supervising so if you want to risk losing your own license then go for it.

We use veygo monthly rolling fee. It's pretty reasonable.

If you are teaching a learner it's could be you that's liable for an accident hence why learner insurance is so much cheaper.

Dingledongledell · 07/08/2025 13:04

Driving without insurance (and your daughter has no insurance. The fact you do is irrelevant) is a much more serious offence than most people realise. Your daughter could well get a driving ban just because you were too tight to pay.

Cosyblankets · 07/08/2025 13:05

Course you don't.
If she smashes into another car or runs someone over you just say ooops sorry she's a learner. And they'll say OK.

thenightsky · 07/08/2025 13:05

You just have to pass a police car for them to tap your plate into their computer to check you're insured for a learner instantly. The L plates will be a giveaway.

Oh... I take you put L plates on??

HereticMyrtleLion · 07/08/2025 13:07

One thing many drivers don't realise is that the last person to drive the car really matters if the car is stolen.

If you have an any driver policy that's just 3rd party as long as they're driving with the policyholder permission, then if your cousing or mate parks your car and it's stolen, the fully comprehensive insurance is null. Same as if you drive a friend's car on your own policy when it's 3rd party to drive any itger car with the policy holder's permission.

So your DD may not crash the car, but if she was driving when it is parked and it's stolen, your car is uninsured.

RedRiverShore5 · 07/08/2025 10:37

Yes you need something like Young marmalade insurance for learners, it's not that expensive.

We always used marmalade and it’s much cheaper before they pass their test. afterwards it’s super expensive! But of
course they need insurance

watchingplanesicantafford · 07/08/2025 13:08

What an incredible example to set a learner driver. Don't be surprised when she's as lackadaisical with insurance once passing and finds herself banned.

They don’t tap, ANPR will do the tapping for them and return the details.
