Motorhome parked on the street

Curious if people know if there's anything we can do about this or just have to live with it. Neighbour across the road seems to have acquired a motorhome, and it's parked on the street. Tbh we'd been hoping it was a temporary thing, eg that he perhaps he had had it in storage and was going away, but it's not shifted in two weeks so I'm guessing not. The motorhome is enormous. I'm not very good at guessing size, but it has six wheels and it's really tall. Its longer than the width of the house it's parked outside.

Our street is old terrace houses, and it's narrow so there's only parking on one side, parking is tight at the best of times. It's always a bit annoying when there's extra vehicles added to the mix, but buying a vehicle this size just seems bonkers when there's little parking. Tbh I'm amazed he even got it on the street, as it's tight T junctions at each end, the bin lorries can't always make it!

I had a look online and can't see anything about restrictions for parking, only that vehicles can't be slept in. I thought local restrictions on parking large vehicles was a common thing, but seems maybe it's covenants on newer estates? Is it something we're just going to have to get used to?

Im trying not to be 'that' neighbour, but it doesn't help that the person who has bought this isnt someone we particularly like - they're quite anti social, eg they'll store junk outside the house, park their car where someone's tried to reserve a spot for a skip delivery, that sort of thing. And this thing is particularly ugly! It looks quite old and not in the best condition. I feel sorry for the neighbour whose house it's directly outside!

I wouldn't lobby for residents parking, the schemes always end up costing residents money and I don't think it would be popular. Plus realistically the parking difficulties are mainly due to residents cars - that's always going to be the case when there's only space for on average, one car per house. Extra cars would be schools and shoppers and they need somewhere to go too.
I just think if you live in a densely populated area you should have a bit of consideration for others, that's all. And for those who will say it's a price issue, our houses don't have parking because they were built before cars existed. There are more modern homes within 20mins walk that have garages and driveways and are a similar price (for an equivalent bed house)

To be fair stanedge has always had problems with parking over the summer as we have had to change climbing plans before now if you don’t get up early / it’s perhaps getting worse - haven’t been there for a few years

what is it with BBQs - on peat for Pete’s sake / utterly irresponsible

sometimes I want a full uk fingerprint database so the culprits can be easily caught

childofthe607080s · 07/08/2025 09:56

I think this whole discussion shows that consideration for others and the environment is what’s seriously lacking and I don’t know how to fix that as so many people seem so selfish

Northernladdette · 07/08/2025 09:57

Hibernatingtilspring · 07/08/2025 08:11

@Titasaducksarse this is the other aspect, I genuinely don't understand why people use motorhomes in the UK - I get the idea of wanting the freedom, but as you say there are very few sites and those with facilities require advanced booking so there's no real spontaneity. Plus weather wise theres less opportunity to use them. If you're traveling in the US or Europe the experience would be much nicer!

Here its a PITA for the neighbours, if there was an obvious benefit to said neighbour I'd understand but I really don't know what that would be. It's far too big for one person. It must cost a fortune in fuel and I don't think he's particularly flush. He can be a bit of a hoarder and I can't help but think he's been offered a deal on it and hasn't got a plan yet.

If he wants a motor home that’s his choice. However, if he’s annoying his neighbours (is it only you?) then that’s another matter. On my council website you can report vehicles for causing an obstruction. I assume you’ve checked its taxed?

Unilaterallyinsane · 07/08/2025 09:58

Hibernatingtilspring · 07/08/2025 09:45

@Unilaterallyinsane I didn't explain that very well, I meant few sites as in places that aren't big camping and caravan parks. In Europe there are more places that motorhomes can park up, eg car parks that have basic facilities. It's easier to just drive and stop where you fancy.

There are literally hundreds and hundreds of small sites that accept motorhomes. These are run by the owners but are part of either the Caravan and Motorhome Club and the Camping and Caravan Club. The Caravan and Motorhome Club have what they call CLs Certificated Locations, which only allow five pitches. These are often on farms and they offer peace and solitude.

It’s horrendous now. Like a theme park. It’s heaving all the time.

Barbecues half way up the edge, camper vans all over the roads and beyond.

Unilaterallyinsane · 07/08/2025 10:05

I’ve just had a look and the Caravan and Motorhome Club have 2,100 CL sites and the Camping and Caravan Club have 300+ CS sites. These CS sites have pitches for five motorhomes or caravans and 10 camping pitches.

Hibernatingtilspring · 07/08/2025 10:07

@Northernladdette yes, it's only me who is annoyed. The other neighbours love it when they can't park on the street, carrying shopping back and forth is great for getting steps in.

@Unilaterallyinsane I didn't know that about CLS sites. My friends must be really picky about where they go I guess!

OP posts:
Unilaterallyinsane · 07/08/2025 10:07

These small sites are quite cheap per night, from around £8 a night up to £30. The more facilities the more expensive. There really is no excuse not to use a site.

We use the CL sites as they are very quiet and offer peace and solitude. I don’t know what your picky friends are after but you can’t go wrong with the CLs. As motorhomes are self contained, we don’t need a shower block and toilets. Just a nice quiet pitch.

Hibernatingtilspring · 07/08/2025 10:12

@childofthe607080s I used to drive around Derbyshire for work, it's pretty bad in the summer. I think a lot of visitors don't understand that many of the routes don't allow parking, and think that if there's no double yellows that it's legal. Im sure some go with good intentions but don't realise that the car parks are small and get full very early! It was always scary around Winnats pass and the caverns near Castleton as there are a lot of pedestrians there. Though they were mainly cars, not motorhomes tbf.

🙏🏼 Please can you check if it’s taxed and MOTd then as if not, there’s an easy solution.

@Hibernatingtilspring

Is there a reason you are not checking? Quite a few have mentioned this now.

A fact that makes what this person is doing either legal or illegal Confused I think it’s incredible selfish btw BUT this is the first thing I would check to see where I stand. I’m beginning to think it’s taxed and you know this.

Hibernatingtilspring · 07/08/2025 10:19

@qotsa Because this is real life, and I'm at work rather than stood on my street. I posted the thread last night. I'm sorry I don't work to your entertainment schedule.

It’s only because it is the first thing I would’ve done to see if I had a leg to stand on. Hope it all works out for you. 👌🏽

As long as it’s taxed and insured I don’t think you can do anything. Check online that it is. I asssume eventually he will go away in it as no point in having it otherwise? When he does, make it very difficult for him to be able to park it again with yours and other neighbours cars parked strategically!

qotsa · 07/08/2025 10:59

@simsbustinoutmimi agreed

You’d be surprised, one of my neighbours has one and it’s been parked there since 2022, albeit we have larger parking areas than OP.

CitizenofMoronia · 07/08/2025 11:06

"It's absolutely huge. I know you can't park caravans and this is far bigger, I'm surprised that one is legal and the other isn't."

Because a caravan is not a vehicle, a motorhome is and has tax, insurance and can be moved.

You're obviously a motorhomer, and understand things from the other side to the vast majority on this post. I'm afraid I honestly feel that a lot of people who complain about them being parked anywhere than in an official site, are jealous. People on here, have pointed out that they park so that they can see the sea, and moan about them blocking THEIR view. They don't seem to equate the fact that they can see the view EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR, whereas the motorhomers are likely only there for a day or even a few hours. I could understand it more if it were a lorry, as they make a lot of noise on start up etc., but if you're like us, park up, look out of the windows, likely go out for dinner, so thereby contribute to the local economy, maybe do a weekly shop in the town, also contributing to the local economy, and NEVER, EVER, leave a trace of having been there, I really do feel that residents are unreasonable to be constantly whining. I can understand it if someone parks up by the village green, gets all there stuff out, and leaves a load of mess behind, but again, in all honesty, it's more likely to be car owners who do this, as the vast majority of motorhome owners, leave the place where they park cleaner than it was before they arrived, it's just the odd ones who leave a mess, and sadly it seems that this has tarred us all with the same brush.

I don't know, it seems that you prioritise 'gotcha' moments on Mumsnet. I am rude to people who do that because I think its a shitty thing to do and deserves calling out. There's always troll hunters and people being contrary for the sake of it on here, and I think some folk forget that the the people posting are real people with real lives.

You can't park a caravan because no road tax is paid on it but you can park a campervan or motorhome on the street as long as it has valid tax, mot and insurance. You're just going to have to learn to live with it.

Hibernatingtilspring · 07/08/2025 11:32

@Givenupshopping I'm not sure whether that was aimed at me or another poster, personally I'm not against motorhomes generally, just think that they should be stored off road due to the size. I don't think they are particularly practical for the UK but if the owners are considerate that's not an issue for other people.

Sorry, where have you been helpful? On the other hand, I have been helpful, pointing out where you can actually park a motorhome without causing a nuisance to anyone else and without snarky comments and eye rolling.
