Motorhome parked on the street

Curious if people know if there's anything we can do about this or just have to live with it. Neighbour across the road seems to have acquired a motorhome, and it's parked on the street. Tbh we'd been hoping it was a temporary thing, eg that he perhaps he had had it in storage and was going away, but it's not shifted in two weeks so I'm guessing not. The motorhome is enormous. I'm not very good at guessing size, but it has six wheels and it's really tall. Its longer than the width of the house it's parked outside.

Our street is old terrace houses, and it's narrow so there's only parking on one side, parking is tight at the best of times. It's always a bit annoying when there's extra vehicles added to the mix, but buying a vehicle this size just seems bonkers when there's little parking. Tbh I'm amazed he even got it on the street, as it's tight T junctions at each end, the bin lorries can't always make it!

I had a look online and can't see anything about restrictions for parking, only that vehicles can't be slept in. I thought local restrictions on parking large vehicles was a common thing, but seems maybe it's covenants on newer estates? Is it something we're just going to have to get used to?

Im trying not to be 'that' neighbour, but it doesn't help that the person who has bought this isnt someone we particularly like - they're quite anti social, eg they'll store junk outside the house, park their car where someone's tried to reserve a spot for a skip delivery, that sort of thing. And this thing is particularly ugly! It looks quite old and not in the best condition. I feel sorry for the neighbour whose house it's directly outside!

Check with the council if there’s a Traffic Regulation Order for your street.

It isn't a short term solution, but would people on the street be willing to lobby councillors for residents parking restrictions? The council can introduce any bye-laws they want (within reason) including numbers and sizes of vehicles.

If they do and win I hope they do what they did in a street near me and made the whole street double yellow lines so no one was able to park there!

Likely nothing you can do.
We have an old bus parked near us. A man lives on the bus. It never moves. It stinks of urine around the bus. All options have been explored. It is taxed and insured therefore the Council and the Police have told us nothing can be done

I think that's code for the council and police can't be arsed to do anything about it.

Mossstitch · 07/08/2025 01:31

It's very easy to check if taxed and MOTd on gov website, you just need the reg number.

RigIt · 07/08/2025 02:32

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 06/08/2025 19:46

We also have this. Except it’s used for about 2 days a year. And they have a drive which it fits on.

He seems to keep all his diy stuff in it uses it to visit b and q. Drives all the neighbours nuts.

Why does him keeping a vehicle he owns on his own drive “drive the neighbours nuts”. We have a number of motorhome/campervan owners around here and it doesn’t affect me or my neighbours in any way.

Ah that's annoying! I haven't actually checked though I'd feel a bit keen going down that route. It's a possibility, same neighbour has previously left broken down cars on the street and I remember at least one being clamped because it wasn't taxed I think (can't remember exactly but it had big stickers on it referring to the clamp)

You can check by typing the plate number into the gov UK website.

unsurewhattodoaboutit · 07/08/2025 05:06

The answer- don’t live in a terraced house with no driveway! You can’t control a street like you can your own drive.

NeedZzzzzssss · 07/08/2025 05:07

I would hate this, but I doubt there's anything you can do about it. Unfortunately people suck.

It depends if it's an eyesore or not. Some of us have worked really hard to live in a nice place/ are fortunate and would like it to stay that way. But I agree if it's out of sight, then there's no issue

muddyford · 07/08/2025 05:12

There's the same situation down the road. It's parked about five feet from someone's sitting room window, blocking all the light. Narrow footpath and no garde. Not the owner's window, of course.

Noodles1234 · 07/08/2025 06:02

Legally I doubt he is doing anything wrong, but “neighbourly” he is being a bit unfair if parking is tight and I imagine has blocked out daylight for the houses he’s parked in front of which must be a bit depressing for those affected.

usually owners pay a small fee to store their motor homes in a secure parking lot as they often attract people damaging them or trying to steal them. This could be a conversation starter so before hand research some local storage sites.

I genuinely couldn’t give a toss about what the street outside my house looks like, as long as people are parked safely and considerately. But maybe I haven’t worked hard enough to live in a nice enough place. 🙄

He doesn’t keep it on his drive! That’s why it drives everyone mad. And it never moves apart from going to pick up bags of sand!

Well you don't care so what does it matter anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️ Prior to where I live now I lived in a an area where no one gave a shit so I feel very lucky to be where I am now. Also note I did say fortunate because I realise I am, and it's not just hard work but luck

BreakingBroken · 07/08/2025 06:51

There are strict bylaws where I live so do call and check. As mentioned you can petition for improved bylaws.
parked campers need to be set back a minimum 10ft from the road, campers are only allowed to be parked on the street 48 hours, no electric cords that could be considered a tripping hazard.

Oh, hi neighbour!

Thanks for all the sensible replies. Not much point seeing what the neighbours think, if it's legal it's legal.
It's a good point about the risk of being vandalised though, it does look quite flimsy and there's a few groups of kids who hang around nearby who have the summer holidays to get through. Although no chance of talking to neighbour about it, as mentioned he blanks you if you say hi (he does it to everyone, not just us!)

And yes I feel sorry for the people he's parked in front of. There's no front gardens as such, just a small strip of yard,so he's less than 3m from their lounge windows. Their view will be a wall of beige.

There’s a lovely pub with a sea view near us. Or it used to have a sea view.. before its opposite neighbour bought a motorhome and parked it in front of their house, thereby blocking the sea view. The things really annoy me. Plus they park in every seaside lay-by around here, spoiling views and not contributing the local economy. Yes yes I know they’re taxed. But they’re an eyesore.

lol what are you on about? I think OP has every every right to not particularly like this neighbour. You'd want rats in your garden would you? Do you own a huge motor home by any chance and do you park it on a narrow street? 🙄

Givenupshopping · 06/08/2025 19:02

Sorry OP, but I think you've taken against the owner of this vehicle, and anything they do is going to irritate you. He owns a vehicle, and if he pays his taxes and it has an MOT, he's just as entitled to park it on this, or any other road, as you are. The fact that you don't like the look of the vehicle, kind of makes me wonder whether this is sheer snobbery on your part??

Give over . Most people don’t want to look at an out of place monstrosity on their road . If keeping the road clear and tidy is snobbish so be it .

Doone22 · 07/08/2025 07:32

Look up both tax and MOT on govt website. If none report to council as abandoned and report to DVLA separately.
If it posseses these things note the expiry and wait....

Not sure how you got that from my post. Our street is full of work vans and all sorts, I'm not concerned about it being a 'naice' area. I genuinely didn't think you could park a vehicle this size on a residential street. It's absolutely huge. I know you can't park caravans and this is far bigger, I'm surprised that one is legal and the other isn't. And in terms of how it looks, it's hard not to see it as an eyesore. It isn't in good condition, I suspect it's a bit of a 'project'. He already has an estate and a van so it seems pretty selfish to me to add this. He lives alone!

I don't actively dislike him, but whereas other neighbours tend to be quite considerate, he noticeably isn't. I know his immediate neighbour and she's had trouble with him leaving rubbish in the garden attracting rats, and climbing over her fence to break into his house at the back when he was locked out. He doesn't say acknowledge you if you say hi. I think it you have a relationship with a neighbour you're more likely to be understanding/let things go.

Why do people worry So much about what their neighbours are doing? Think about it this way, when you reach the end of your life and only have moments left to reflect, how important is this issue still going to be? Is it really going to matter? So in real world terms, what detrimental impact is this actually having on you personally right at this moment? In what way is it making your life so unbearable that it's worth giving so much headspace? Essentially it's just a post about my neighbour has got something I haven't got.

That may or may not be the case in specific cases, but paying taxes and having an MOT does not entitle anyone to park on any road. In our area larger vehicles must be parked on driveways and not on roads and that is actively enforced by the council. In some places where parking is particularly bad residents get two permits to park on their own street and no other vehicles can be parked there, whether or not they are residents. Again that is actively enforced.

Drfosters · 07/08/2025 07:39

I find it strange a lot of people are saying you can’t do anything. Lots of councils so do have rules about that can be parked in the road. In London where I live you would not be able to park a motor home, caravan, minibus, lorry, coach etc on the roadside. Even skips are strictly regulated. A small camper van is about the biggest thing that would be allowed.
