It just makes me feel really small and pathetic when people post it in response to something I've said. .

Maybe I am being oversensitive. Maybe others who feel like me should help me start a support group? MNers Against Nasty And Gratuitous Emoticons (M.A.N.A.G.E). I'll be chairman.

YABU

BroccoliSpears · 28/05/2008 19:51

Does anyone else always ready the word 'emoticon' in the voice of Comic Store Guy from The Simpsons?

nickytwotimes · 28/05/2008 19:52

Oh, i like the emoticon. Speaks a thousand words. Must be used with caution though.

Broccoli - erm no. ()

GordontheGopher · 28/05/2008 19:53

I always imagine the actual poster making that face and I feel really stupid for saying whatever it was I said.

not so sure about banning it!why i like the emoticons.you know it's a racy thread when the humphy faces emerge

keep them i say

oh and MORE SHOUTING too

TheFallenMadonna · 28/05/2008 19:55

Oh I rather like the

But I do find passive aggressive smiley use rather infuriating.

Fanella · 28/05/2008 19:55

lol Broccoli I didn't but I will now.

FrannyandZooey · 28/05/2008 19:56

oh it is my favourite but I know you will have many followers

just think how much nastier it would get though if the only way we had to relieve our emotions was to actually SAY "I think you are being a total arsehole"

is so much tidier

lackaDAISYcal · 28/05/2008 19:56

I like it...it's not just for putting people down, although it can be used very effectively in that way. It can also" used to express your own scepticism at something you have come across in RL and are waxing lyrical about on a thread......ie my HV said that DS would sleep better if I gave him babyrice...he's 13 weeks "

and how would we all display our annoyance when a troll pops out from under the bridge every now and again?

ShowOfHands · 28/05/2008 19:56

Aww Broccoli, that's sweet. You're alone, but sweet.

I don't like much. I think it's passive aggressive in some situations. I think we need a [meh] one. Grey with no smile, no frown, nothing.

ShowOfHands · 28/05/2008 19:57

See with trolls, a well-timed 'sod off' is generally enough.

hullygully · 28/05/2008 19:58

Can't you at least be the chairperson or just chair???

GordontheGopher · 28/05/2008 19:59

Well I haven't got any other members yet so I can jolly well call myself whatever I want.

LazyLinePainterJane · 28/05/2008 20:01

oooh i LOVE it, t'is my favourite one.

Slubberdegullion · 28/05/2008 20:03

nooo as Anna says it's the best one. I never use it in a combative situation though.

For those occasions I like to bring out the tried and tested (and yet sadly underused)

\ / (kung fu arms)

or \ / if you are really fiesty

Squack · 28/05/2008 20:06

lol slubber

agree it has it's uses. I'd quite like more emoticons actually.

GordontheGopher · 28/05/2008 20:07

I want a cuddly one.

OP posts:
savoycabbage · 28/05/2008 20:10

No is the worst one surely!

Squack · 28/05/2008 20:11

why!?!?

I could have a rofl one that moves. I like that one. Maybe a rolls eyes one

Ooh ooh a bridge with a troll peeking out would be funny!

GordontheGopher · 28/05/2008 20:13

A one with little hearts round it. Or just a heart one. MN needs more luuurrve.
