To cancel our Wembley trip?

Firstly, this genuinely isn’t because someone really sadly fell and died from the upper tier on Saturday night, although it’s brought the issue to mind much more.

We’ve got Coldplay tickets for later this month at Wembley for the four of us (DC are 11 and 9). Thought it would be an amazing first concert for them, they’ve enjoyed Coldplay at Glastonbury and the crowd are generally quite chilled.

Our seats are in the 500s/upper tier. I had already warned the kids it’s high but that it’ll be amazing to see the stadium and all the lights etc. As we get closer to the date, I’m really thinking it’s a mistake - both my kids are not great with heights and tbh, neither am I but I’ve been in a situation where I’ve had to deal with it and ended up enjoying myself regardless.

I’ve read that sometimes staff at Wembley have been able to move people but I don’t think I could rely on that as an option! What would you do?

IABU - don’t cancel, go and see what it’s like and you might all enjoy it

IANBU - sell the tickets and catch them another time

It was a while ago now, and at the O2. But I had tickets for up in the high section, when I got there and realised how high it was I freaked out due to my fear of heights. We spoke to someone there and got upgraded to a box, free of charge.

I was pleasantly surprised by how not steep the top level of Wembley felt compared to the o2 - admittedly I was in row 7 of the 500s.

Exactly this. I was at Oasis on Sunday night. We were row 10 in the 500's. Didn't feel to high and no way near as steep as upper levels of the O2, which i will never book for again (felt nervous to stand as so steep).
I would go, your children will have a great time.

sellotapechicken · 05/08/2025 10:26

What a complete waste of money

Ilovethatforyou · 05/08/2025 11:01

It’s made me feel much better - thanks everyone. I do think that once we are sat down, we’ll acclimatise! Planning on leaving a bit early, although we are driving up but still don’t want to get stuck in a sea of people ideally

Ilovethatforyou · 05/08/2025 11:05

@sellotapechicken i was surprised it took so long for someone to pop up with an anti Coldplay quip 😂Luckily, I’m ok with spending that but thank you for your input.

People die in car crashes all the time yet no one crying about cancelling cars
People die at home all the time yet no one crying about cancelling homes
One person dies at a concert not o we can't go anywhere near that venue
Just putting things into perspective

Ilovethatforyou · 05/08/2025 11:16

@Isxmasoveryet its not what I’m worried about - I don’t think any of us are going to die. The incident meant that lots of people are talking about how steep those tiers are, which made me second guess whether my kids will actually cope with the height. We’re def going to do it, having heard from others on this thread that it’s been ok! I’ve just never been up there, but it sounds better than the 02, which did freak me out!

As many have said Wembley is ok OP i think you'll be fine 😊

Years ago i went to an old theatre in London to see Oliver and was right up 'in the gods'.

Bloody hell it was steep! My feet were fight behind the person in front's actual head and it felt like there was about 3 inches of floor to stand on. When i had to stand to let someone pass and when it was time to stand to leave I felt sick and like shuffling along sideways clinging to the chair arms! 🥹

EveryOtherNameTaken · 05/08/2025 09:11

I'm scared of heights and was terrified at the 02 Arena, but not at Wembley. It doesn't feel particularly high or overly steep, even in the high seats.

Once they are sat down, they'll be fine. If you are two adults, one go at the front and one at the back going up the steps with them in the middle. If just you, go behind them so they feel secure.

Enjoy!

As someone who used to live in the area, if you're driving park north of Wembley and get the tube - the queues for the northbound train are much shorter than the queues for central London.

LikeMyHeartIsAboutToStopBeating · 05/08/2025 11:43

I don’t have a sever fear of heights but found the top of the O2 almost unbearable. But the 500s at Wembley were absolutely fine - didn’t feel that horrible sense of peering down that I have at the O2.

Motomum23 · 05/08/2025 11:43

I'm block 500 front row for blackpink in a fortnight- more than happy to report back on any height issues - my dd13 isn't keen on heights but I was rather hoping she'll be too excited to be concerned.

ns87 · 05/08/2025 11:47

Nah, Wembley is fine

DorothyWainwright · 05/08/2025 13:44

You'll be fine. We were up in the 500's for Taylor and Harry. It's really ok once you've got your bearings.

There'll be far less alcohol at Coldplay than Oasis. Calmer crowd.

DiscoBob · 05/08/2025 13:55

I wouldn't cancel. You will be supervising your children at all times. And frankly Coldplay isn't going to attract the same kind of drunken excessive crown you'd get for an Oasis reunion.

The accident at Oasis will have prompted an extremely meticulous review of safety measures and they'll need to prove they've taken steps to ensure that risk is fully accounted for and prepared for. So if anything it may be safer when you go than before the accident.

Brefugee · 05/08/2025 13:58

tbh if you don't ever let your children, or slightly push your children, to do things outside their comfort zone, you are doing them (and the rest of us who may have to interact with them in future) a big disservice.

Go. Thousands and thousands of people go to gigs there, and other similar places, all the time.

If you want steep, try the "Yellow Wall" at Borussia Dortmund's ground...

Have fun, despite their recent music being utter tripe, they do a good show.

ETA: take ear defendders for them.

Arran2024 · 05/08/2025 17:46

I have been up high at Wembley and it's much better than being up high at the 02. You adjust, and everyone around is doing it.

My husband even comes with it and he took a panic attack once at the Albert Hall when we were in the first row of the balcony and we had to be moved!

Kjpt140v · 05/08/2025 18:59

I vote you that you are being unreasonable. Unless your children's behaviour has been awful, no child deserves to be forced to watch Coldplay.

Happyholidays78 · 05/08/2025 19:13

OP it sounds like the high seats are not bad at Wembley from the comment's here. I've always 'liked' Coldplay and watched them in Cardiff 2 years ago & I now completely LOVE them! They are fantastic live & I've never been to a gig like it, I am sure your family will really enjoy it & remember it forever. Enjoy. P.S what is it about people going out of their way to slag Coldplay off? Bizarre! If you don't like them don't go & certainly don't click on a page that mentions them!

Ilovethatforyou · 05/08/2025 08:33

@Katflapkit thats it - I really wanted to give them a great experience. I also do want to teach them it’s ok to feel the fear and do it anyway… DS is quite sensitive and easily overwhelmed. I didn’t want to stress him out.

If he managed glasto, he will manage Wembley.
my kid is adhd and autistic and thrives in concerts.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 05/08/2025 19:30

We've seen Coldplay more times than I can count, and their stage presence/shows are genuinely amazing especially the lights/wristbands when it gets dark. And it's a good crowd. Don't miss out on an amazing experience. We're going in September and are in the lower tiers. Just get the set list from the earlier concerts and we always leave 2 songs before the end. You will still hear it/see the fireworks walking to the car/tube as Wembley is horrendous to get out from. We went by coach once and it didn't get out of the car park until 1am. Never again!

captureitrememberit · 05/08/2025 19:32

Having done both in the past year I found being at the top of the o2 much more scary than the top of Wembley.

Ilovethatforyou · 05/08/2025 19:38

Thanks all! DH saw them a few years back and agree they are pretty spectacular live. For DCs first big concert, I think it’s a good one. I’ve been convinced 😁

Totally get they are not everyone’s cup of tea, but I defy anyone to see them play “Sky Full of Stars” live and not be moved. Not possible, surely?! 😉

Ilovethatforyou · 05/08/2025 19:40

@Blades2 sorry I meant glasto on TV. Haven’t braved that with kids!

OP posts:
Ilovethatforyou · 05/08/2025 19:43

Actually, if anyone has an opinion on parking that’d be great. Choices are (both through just park)

a primary school 20 mins walk away. Manned and guaranteed spaces. Secure. DH and I parked there when we last went and it was great, just not sure about the walk with kids. Can’t remember it feeling dodgy but it’s different when you don’t have kids with you.

a driveway one tube stop up in kingsbury, close to the tube. Downside of this is even though we’ll be going the opposite way to most other people, we still have to get to the tube.

either way, we will likely leave 2 songs before the end. Any thoughts most appreciated

We've booked one of the onsite car parks. Not had an issue getting out of them before.
