DD complaining of having to look after dogs

Going holiday Tom with DH come back Friday evening. DD not happy about having to look after our dogs & is complaining about having to get up if they become unsettled/anxious. This is not an every night thing but occasionally me/DH have to come down to resettle them back down. Also she’s complaining about having to wake up earlier to sort them out before she gets ready for work. (she works from home)
AIBU to be annoyed & frustrated at her the night before we go away for having ruined the start of our short break or should I just ignore her?

did you ask if she was ok to look after the dogs before you booked the trip?

Yes and she agreed to it

Then she needs to stop whinging.

Wolfpa · 04/08/2025 21:18

Then you are not being unreasonable at all

Coconutter24 · 04/08/2025 21:19

Have you asked her why she agreed to do it if she’s not happy about it?

PixiePuffBall · 04/08/2025 21:20

How old is she?

Does she pay rent?

What does that have to do with her complaining about looking after dogs

Just ignore the complaining - surely she’ll just get on with it once you’ve set off?
Enjoy your break!

Yes thank you
Just to be clear I did say to DD either dogs go to Boarding Kennels if you are unable to look after them both. DD said no it’s fine I will look after them so she was more than fine with it. No one forcing her to watch dogs

Does she live with you and the dogs?

Aren’t they family dogs then? I can’t understand why she has a problem with this, I’d be so annoyed in this situation, why has she only said this the day before you leave? I’d just tell her the arrangements were made and she needs to get on with it.

This is exactly what I told her. That as family dogs we all have to be around for them and if you was more than happy to look after them then stop complaining the night before because you don’t want to have to get up in case you need to resettle them (very rare for this to happen may I add) and to sort them out before you go work so you don’t get up too early. DH has said to her more or less the same.

If these are dogs that she would normally live with and help out with she needs to just get on with it!
If she can’t get up early to let the dogs out, you better warn her never to have a baby!

So there’s only 2 dogs and she’s still moaning?! 🙄

At her age (and younger) I used to look after my parents’ dogs for 2 weeks every summer while they went on holiday. At one point that was 3 adult dogs and 5 small puppies. Which obviously turned into 8 adult dogs by the following year. And yes, I was also working (out of the house) as well as studying. It never occurred to me to moan about it. And if I had, I suspect I wouldn’t have been living in that house for a minute longer.

DD has said she will sleep downstairs so the dogs don’t become unsettled/anxious to save her from going up/down the stairs. Again this was her choice

What does that have to do with her complaining about looking after dogs

If she doesn't then it's an extra reason for her to shut the fuck up.

She should still look after them anyway if she agreed to.

ML5 · 04/08/2025 23:25

Makes me feel like I’m forcing her or putting it on her however she did agree to it & my DH said ignore her and she’s just going to have to get on with it as she agreed it.

If she lives there rent free or at a reduced rate then she needs to pitch in and help out.

If she pays rent at market rates then it's like insisting your lodger cares for your dogs.

Well she lives at home and these are family dogs (2 and 4 years old) we have had since 9 weeks old so rent free or not everyone has to take care of them

One of those situations in which you can’t control her behaviour, only how you respond to it. Respond with a shrug and not any more. Don’t take it on.
