Denmark zoo advertising for unwanted pets to be donated.. They will be euthanised and fed to the animals...
If it was April 1st I would assume some sick Fool.

Ahh this is so Danish and practical, love it.
A while back a Danish friend of mine was over for lunch, we went into the garden and found a half-dead pigeon, probably mauled by the neighbours cat. Danish friend asks if I have a frying pan, and proceeds to promptly smash the poor pigeon, swiftly ending its misery. I wish I were that practical.

I thought you were going to say that Danish friend cooked it 🤣

I can understand why people feel uneasy about it.

I wonder how the pets are put down , I wouldn't of thought it safe ( or financially viable) to inject them with a very heavy sedative , enough to kill them as we would do with our pets at the vets , and then feed them to another animal .
Granted feeding a mouse to a lion , no issues but feeding a mouse to a snake , wouldn't that risk harming the snake ?

Isn't the whole point that they don't kill the mouse first, they just give it to the snake?

What's the difference between eating one animal or another? Is there a hierarchy? Why would be ok to use a farmed rabbit as food but not one that had been a pet?
All meat is murder.

It’s not the zoo staff that are going to eat the euthanised animals, it’s the zoo animals. Unless you are on a mission to make all animals vegan??

But it's something they are doing anyway. This is just an alternative to buying them from a supplier or breeding them themselves. They obviously know how to euthanize them so they aren't a risk to the predator animal.
The only reason people feel uneasy is that its not something they have thought about themselves, rather than realise it's happening on a massive scale worldwide. Its just this time the zoo is being open about it and is actually trying to reduce the number of animals killed unnecessarily.

Some horse owners will ask the hunt to shoot/dispose of their horse ie feed it to the hounds. It’s one way to deal with a normally very large carcass which would otherwise be cremated.

Round here, you can also donate the carcass (if not full of drugs, obviously) to the big cat sanctuary. Roadkill deer are sometimes picked up by Highways and taken there too.

My local feed stores sell trays of baby chicks, males are of little use and are often ground up rather than allowed to live.

No, they are euthanized first. But they have to put whole animals in front of the snake. It won't go for mince or bits of rabbit, it doesn't recognise them as food. Which is why they are looking for donations from people that are fed up of Fluffy.

TempestTost · 04/08/2025 15:28

The zoo near me, in Canada, accepts donations of horses and other large pet animals that have died/put down, in a way that is not a risk for the zoo animals. So not taking certain medications o having diseases that could be passed on.

It can actually be quite difficult and expensive to dispose of animals like this that have to be put down. There is a trade here in sending work out horses to Quebec for the meat trade for humans, for much the same reason. It's simply very expensive to keep an animal that size. During covid there were quite a few school horses put down because their owners could no longer afford to feed them.

It's a bit funny. People object to feeding animals we raise to feed to tigers in the zoo, at the same time they will donate money to save wild tigers in India. Guess what people, the tigers in India are not vegetarians either.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 04/08/2025 15:30

Danes aren't sentimental about animals. DDs old Brownie pack slaughter 2 ducks a year for Saint Mortens evening and then eat them with red cabbage and caramelised potatoes. My girl guides have done the same with chickens on survival weekends. It's a thing.

I've been a vegetrian for most of my life, had a respite when I was pregnant but I have to agree with this.. we had a bit of a "scandal" over here, Findus Crispy Pancakes were found to have some horse meat in them, I couldn't understand the outrage.. it was hardly the CJD crisis all over again

Well not to an animal it's not...it's survival, unless you think tigers are going to start going veggie because rabbits have feelings too.

🙄

And again, what's wrong with this? Its not like the kids were on their own and wandered across it. It was an advertised dissection display.

Healthy animal put down because they didn't want to breed from him, they had numerous people offering places for him to live and petitions against this. I think it's abhorrent that they didn't explore rehoming options and decided to kill him because he wasn't of use to them.

I haven't seen the article but @Campingisnexttogodliness said they are euthanized first in their 1st post.

I used to quite fancy one of those sky burials. After your death you are left on a mountaintop ledge. Then the vultures come and peck at the body till there is nothing left of you. Nepal or possibly India I think? Maybe some humans would like to be fed to zoo animals after death? Might be cheaper than a funeral.

The Swiss eat cats at Xmas time as they are considered a delicacy.😞

Other reputable zoos would have taken it as I recall.

Bollocks they do (maybe they eat bollocks but not cats!)

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 04/08/2025 16:24

I really don't see why this is an issue. Animals eat animals - tis the circle of life.

Or get cremated, there’s a company that makes you into fireworks, shoot across a valley! I think you can add flower seeds.

Not the same zoo - but also Denmark - that butchered a healthy 2 yo giraffe in front of visitors including small dc..

ginasevern · 04/08/2025 16:41

It sounds distasteful because it's in a controlled environment rather than nature taking its course. As in, the animals hunting for their own food. Denmark has not got a glowing history on animal welfare by the way. They were one of the last EU countries to ban bestiality (as recently as 2015) and actually had perfectly legal animal brothels where humans paid to have sex with animals. They were banned largely because of "bestiality tourism" rather than any other concerns.

Ah I like the idea of the flower seeds mixed with the ashes and scattered about. Would the firework not burn up the flower seeds when it went off though?

MarxistMags · 04/08/2025 16:54

@tumblingdowntherabbithole I think it was done more commonly in the past.
Hopefully not now !! 😻
