I can’t bear smelly bins either.

I have a waste disposal for ‘moist’ food waste
I put packaging from fish/ prawns etc straight into the bin outside
I wash my bin out once or twice a week with kitchen spray and hot water

Doitrightnow · 04/08/2025 09:12

Food waste in tub by the sink emptied each evening to outside green bin.

Meat / fish wrappings go immediately in to outside black bin.

Other stuff doesn't seem to smell - we do rinse things like cans before putting in the bin, as you should (we have two inside - recycling and non recycling).

No wet food bar tea bags goes into my bin as the council composts everything else with the garden waste. The trick is not to have a big bin as stuff stays in for longer and gets smelly. Smaller bin, change more often.

Same here. I empty the kitchen bin often and double bag everything that goes in our black bin just to minimise any outside smells too.

MrMucker · 04/08/2025 09:13

Why are people adding smells and flavours and scented bags and powders to their rubbish when you can just manage it more effectively? All of these products bring in even more rubbish through their packaging and chemical footprint!

TicTac80 · 04/08/2025 09:19

Like PP have said, it depends on what you're putting in the bin (and how often you empty it). My recyclable plastic/glass/tin is rinsed and goes in the the recycling bins. Cardboard/paper into another. Food waste is in a food caddy (with a biodegradable liner). I will freeze certain food waste to stop the smells (and chuck them on bin collection day). I've got a stackable Joseph Joseph bin (recycling goes in the bit underneath then gets taken out and sorted). Smaller capacity than my previous large kitchen bin, but I found emptying it more frequently helps. I clean my bin frequently too (quick wipe with an antibacterial wipe), and I think that helps.

When it's full. Pedal Bin.

Thats the problem
when it’s full is not often enough
life is too short to live with a stinking bin
empty it daily
get a smaller bin

Dolphinnoises · 04/08/2025 09:23

My bin isn’t smelly at all but I have a waste disposal. Game changer. When it was broken recently I used a kitchen caddy with compost bag liners. If I ever get a stale whiff emptying the bin I spray in a load of Dettol spray and wipe it out with kitchen roll

AngryDH25 · 04/08/2025 09:24

I use nappy bags or dog bags for any food, I only put “dry” things in the kitchen bin and then I take those out at the end of every day

Ilovegoldies · 04/08/2025 09:24

We don't have a kitchen bin. We use a small bag and chuck it daily. We do use a food waste bin normally but we suspended its use during this warm weather.

CarlaH · 04/08/2025 09:24

We wash all the soft plastics that are contaminated with meat or fish before putting them in our kitchen bin.

The washing doesn't seem to be working though because the bin does start to stink after a few days and because so much is recycled it isn't full at all. It is a pain in the posterior.

FurForksSake · 04/08/2025 09:25

Same as the thread, no food waste, wash out every container and recycle everything. We use bin buddy in the bottom and that helps.

BadActingParsley · 04/08/2025 09:27

Just empty it more often and double bag stinky leftovers.

Wh0cares · 04/08/2025 09:27

I don't have a bin in the kitchen just put stuff out in the big bin as and when needed. No need to keep rubbish in the house in a bin that's has to be brought out to put in a bigger bin. Just put stuff out into the wheelie bin when you are finished with it

Gettingbysomehow · 04/08/2025 09:28

Everything gets washed before it goes in the bin especially cat food pouches. I'm vegetarian so my left overs go in the compost. There is very little waste.
The used cat litter goes in an outside bin tied up in biodegradable bin bags.
We only have three weekly bin collections so I can't have stinking bins.

Howmanycatsistoomany · 04/08/2025 09:29

You need a kitchen compost bin - mine has a filter in the lid so no smell. I use it for peelings and tea/tea bags. And the liners are compostable so when they're full they get chucked on the compost heap.
The only stuff that goes in our bin is stuff that can't be composted or recycled.

scaredfriend · 04/08/2025 09:32

Nothing smelly goes in our kitchen bin as we put food waste in a food caddy (council collects it separately to general waste) and recycle almost all food packaging (which is washed first). Kitchen bin typically contains only dirt from Dyson canister, used kitchen roll and packaging that can’t be recycled.
I appreciate that different areas offer different recycling schemes but for most places now, there should be very little being thrown in the general waste bin.

KingfisherAmmonite · 04/08/2025 09:33

TheCoralEagle · 04/08/2025 03:02

The kitchen bin is just non-recyclables. Crisp packets etc. No food and nothing smelly so it never smells of anything.

Now the food bin - that's another matter at this time of year 🤢

Crisp packets and other plastic bags and such are recyclable. Those are the types of recycling that you put in the plastic bag recycling at supermarkets.

Since I started recycling these plastics, I've got a tiny bin because I've hardly got any rubbish. Think 5l capacity. Any cooked food waste I tie in a bag in the bucket (which also has a bag).

If my area took food waste I'd barely have anything to put in a bin.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 04/08/2025 09:37

Our council doesn't collect food waste, so ours goes in the bin. My wheelie bin is at the end of the garden so food waste sometimes has to go into the kitchen bin. I find as long as it's not full and the lid is down it doesn't smell (well, the dog ignores it and nobody comments). I put drops of essential oil in the bottom before I change the bag, don't put anything too wet in or meat leftovers (the dog gets those) and make sure the lid is properly closed.

Dodie66 · 04/08/2025 09:39

Can you put it in a cupboard. Ours is in a cupboard and gets changed once or twice a day. Everything goes in the bin apart from cardboard and tins etc
no smell

ErrolTheDragon · 04/08/2025 09:45

We don’t have food recycling here, unfortunately and (thanks to dotty neighbour putting out so much bird food she’s encouraged ratsHmm) no compost bin either at the moment.
But I don’t think our bin smells too bad. We don’t throw out much food waste, I rinse off packaging from raw meat or fish before it goes in. Teabags and coffee grounds really aren’t a problem IME. It may help that for various reasons at the moment we’re not using very many onions or oranges - that’s a combination which can be quite bad.
The other thing is using Dettox deodorising spray on it especially inside the lid.

Caspianberg · 04/08/2025 09:50

No. We have small under sink built in bins. Empty regularly

Plastic, metals, glass is all washed before recycling

Anything compostable is in separate bin and home compost in garden. Daily usually

The remaining waste is pretty small, in 10L bin. Anything like meat or bones gets taken straight out.

RB68 · 04/08/2025 09:55

smaller bin, empty more frequently, don't put slops in main bin even if the outside bin takes both - have a smaller unit just for slops that is emptied daily. One friend of mine freezes food waste and then puts it in the bin frozen on bin day.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/08/2025 09:55

If you don’t have food waste collected weekly, I’d put it in bags in the freezer until the night before the bin men come.

We do have food waste collected, but I still put any scraps of meat or fish in the freezer until the night before, esp. in summer, since the smell will attract bluebottles. Apparently they can smell anything dead - so any meat or fish - from a mile away!

RawBloomers · 04/08/2025 09:55

Outdoor bins stink and I can't be bothered going to the effort or expense of keeping them sweet smelling. But kitchen bin doesn't generally. Food waste is separated and gets taken out every day or two. Recycling piles up so goes out two or three times a week, but never smells as everything that goes in is clean.

Regular bin normally lasts a week. It occasionally stinks if we have meat packaging with those absorbent pads early in the week. If so I just swap the bag out. Swapping the bag gets rid of the smell, but I know from my student days that if you leave it it can sort of soak in to the hard plastic bin and then you'd need bleach or maybe even replacing.

NeedWineNow · 04/08/2025 09:57

We have a large pedal bin with a black bin bag inside and a food caddy. Any food waste goes in the food caddy, recyclables are rinsed through and go straight in our green wheelie bin. Anything else goes in the pedal bin and DH empties it every Sunday. He puts Bin Buddy in the bottom of the bin and bin freshener before putting a new bin bag in. I give the bin and good caddy a good clean every month -take them out in the garden and rinse out with disinfectant and very hot water making sure I get in round all the hinges and pedal in case anything gets caught round.
