Probably the time of year.
The kitchen bin.often stinks and it's horrible.
Yes it's gets cleaned and the bags changed but ewwwww I hate it.

How do you cope with your smelly kitchen bin anything I'm missing?😚😷😫

I never put anything "wet" in my bin and usually changed the bag if it smells.

Jeyes makes a product called fresh bin powder and there is a bin deodorant called bin buddy which might help.

Tagyoureit · 03/08/2025 23:32

Bicarbonate of soda sprinkled in the bottom?
Maybe changing the bag more than you do?
Have you checked the lid, hinges, mechanisms etc to ensure they're not gummed up with smelly waste?

Bologneselove · 03/08/2025 23:34

I never put food items or plastic that contained wet food. Those go in recycling bills. Bin never smells. I reverted to this way because my kitchen bin stank so quickly.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 03/08/2025 23:35

My friend has a small bin for the day - a tub on the kitchen side that she empties each evening. Been considering doing the same.

ninjahamster · 03/08/2025 23:36

Our bin doesn’t take any food waste, we have a caddy for that, collected weekly. So no smells here.

Same. Old dog food and bits from the sink go in it too.
It is dry stuff that goes in my kitchen bin.

I give it a spray with a nice smelling disinfectant between bag changes too.

Solidarity OP but no good advice

echt · 03/08/2025 23:49

No wet food bar tea bags goes into my bin as the council composts everything else with the garden waste. The trick is not to have a big bin as stuff stays in for longer and gets smelly. Smaller bin, change more often.

Isabelle70 · 03/08/2025 23:52

I had a food waste caddy that only has uncooked vegetables peelings or teabags in it. Any cooked food waste goes in a bag in the freezer. Any recyclable items are rinsed in the last bit of dish water so my kitchen bin only has clean waste in it. Never smells and the dog takes no interest in it so it can’t smell!

It's a pedal bin.

What sort of things are you putting in it? Meat and fish will obviously smell bad.

Fresh veg peelings? Not bad.

Cooked leftover potatoes? They’ll smell bad.

If you can identify what it is, get some very small bags so that thing can immediately go in the wheely bin, or do as the Australians (and a pp) do and freeze it until bin day.

And yes, smaller bin. What size is your pedal bin? They come in all sizes.

Soak and scrub any hinges and bits that are not smooth plastic.

How can you put food in the recycling bin?

Tarkan · 04/08/2025 00:49

I have a Joseph Joseph bin with a filter in the lid and we’ve noticed a huge difference thanks to that. It has a food caddy inside it for our food recycling as well so no smells from that either.

ladyofshertonabbas · 04/08/2025 00:55

How often is it emptied?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/08/2025 00:56

Ours gets emptied every evening.

BashfulClam · 04/08/2025 00:57

Bicarbonate of soda sprinkled in the bottom. Dettol spray each time the bag is changed, clean the lid every day! No smells here.

Our council only collects fortnightly and we aren't allowed wheelie bins, it's a nightmare as meat and fish wrappers invariably stink after a few days but nowhere to put it🤷‍♀️

When it's full. Pedal Bin.

Do you have to put wet/organic stuff as well as landfill in the pedal bin?

Hankunamatata · 04/08/2025 01:55

We have 4 bins.
Recyclables get washed if needed and put in bin so they don't smell

Then other bins are in cupboard so that helps smell woth sealed lids and air fresher in cupboard - they all pull out on a rack
Small sealed food bin we empty daily
Small bin for general rubbish that again is emptied daily
Small glass bin

Idontjetwashthefucker · 04/08/2025 02:02

We have a large kitchen bin, it never smells, it contains stuff that isn't recyclable and if it's wrapping from food i.e. the packaging from a roast chicken, or used coffee pods, it's washed before it's binned

EmeraldShamrock000 · 04/08/2025 02:07

Get a decent metal compost caddy.
I use a small kitchen bin, it is not big enough to get smelly.

Everyday??

Heartofglass12345 · 04/08/2025 02:18

I keep thinking of using those gel things that you can stick to the side of your toilet, I don’t know what they are called but they might work!
