Climbing Frame and Privacy

HappyKite2067 · 03/08/2025 10:16

We don’t want to be ‘those neighbours’ but our neighbours have put a climbing frame for their children right next to our fence. We now constantly have little faces popping up over our (2m) fence and looking straight onto our patio area and into our kitchen.

Their garden is probably 4m x 6m at a push, so I think anywhere in the garden would probably intrude.

We really want children to make use of a garden, we don’t mind noise (and they are noisy!) and we don’t even mind the occasional ball being kicked over- but this is our privacy now.

Anyone been in this position before? I imagine they are unlikely to take down.

It's completely creepy how many people think exposing themselves to children is the answer to this problem.

Doing gardening naked in their own back garden behind a fence isn't "exposing themselves to children"

It is when the expressed intention of that nakedness is to make children an audience to your nakedness...which is what these poster are suggesting/ laughing about. It's creepy, grotty behaviour.

Both kinds of bamboo spread but the clumping bamboo spreads at a slower pace. Either way it can become a problem. The best way around it is to grow in very large pots with a metal plate under each pot as the bamboo can break through plastic saucers/plates.

Thanks I have some large ceramic pots I need to fill, I might try this!

Ah, I well remember being yelled at by the neighbours as a kid for 'looking into their garden' from our climbing frame (We weren't, they were very boring, we were just playing).

That was 40 odd years ago and i remember it like it was yesterday (plus it didn't stop us; in fact it emboldened us to sit at the top with copies of the beano with comedy holes in held in front of our faces, ostentatiously 'not looking' at the neighbour. We weren't looking at all until she kicked off).

Please don't be those people. Speak politely to the parents if it becomes a problem but honestly you're probably not that interesting to next door's kids!

Aspanielstolemysanity · 03/08/2025 19:22

It may be a breach of planning position, I can't remember the rules exactly

Best thing to do is smile and say hello to the children and ignore any cheek, they soon get bored.

Edited

Grotty behavior is also installing toys which have a negitive impact on the NDN

Basic good manners should have resulted in the privacy of the OP being respected and the parents putting up a higher privacy screen.

Pointing out that the OP can be naked is pointing out that the parents should remember that NDN has a right to a level of privacy in her property.

The parents have already made the choice to make the children an audience to anything the OP is doing

The children will not be able to move the frame nor add in a new fence thats the parents obligation.

And the OP is not going to do it anyway.

I didn’t perceive any comments to be to creepy or gritty (maybe that’s a reflection of your thoughts), only about making it clear to parents that this is private property and it is their responsibility to monitor their children (if children are peering into others private property, that’s always a risk). Respect works both ways…we would never be naked in our garden as it would make others uncomfortable; and equally parents should consider how it might impact others before erecting climbing frames in tiny gardens.

🤔 Yeah, lots of suspect posters on this thread.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 03/08/2025 19:55

I'd stick with the bamboo, op, and then you won't find yourself having to explain why you became a naturist the moment the neighbour's kids could see over the fence. Like a grotbag.

There are lots of naturists out there…I wouldn’t describe them as grotbags…

My mum had this issue, only it was worse because their garden was higher than hers. So we bought a cheap wind break off Amazon and attached it to the fence on some wooden batons. It was very obvious but she was past caring at that stage and it did put a complete stop to the kids shouting at her every time she went outside.

I’ll give something like this a go. It’s hard to explain when people have not been through it, but when you just want to sit on your patio in an evening after work or at lunch on a weekend after a week at work, the last thing you want is little faces popping up!

We had an issue with the neighbours grandkids hanging out the upstairs window and pogging into our patio area and taking the piss out of us just going about our day.

Planted some bamboo and put up a huge well placed brolly till it took over.

The neighbour fucking HATES our bamboo but we love how private our garden is now. Can’t see thier windows at all now. Bamboo is the height of our upstairs window I.e fookin’ massive. Should have reined her grandkids in and we’d never have thought of planting it.

Bamboo (not rapid spreading but tall fast growing varieties) is the way to go. It also sounds lovely in the wind.

This sounds promising- and I’m guessing it might add value if we come to sell!

I’d strongly advise you not to plant it directly in the ground OP.

NewsdeskJC · 03/08/2025 20:35

Id just put a washing line up, peg some sheets and use a prop.

FamilyAreEverything · 03/08/2025 20:35

Please DO NOT plant bamboo. Even the clumping variety spreads, even if it’s in big, thick, ceramic pots. It’s invasive and if it spreads to your neighbours garden, then they can they can take action to recoup the costs of removing it from your garden.
It WILL NOT add value to your home.

Bamboo is perfectly safe when it’s been contained correctly.

Driftingawaynow · 03/08/2025 20:49

Simply install a hornets nest on your side of the fence

won't it be time consuming to train the hornets to stick to that side of the fence and not cross over though?

Respectfully, I have to disagree from personal experience of dealing with bamboo that was “contained”
