Because I am fed up with all the emails I am getting about this Boycott and that protest. Before long Petrol will be so expensive that people will have to start looking at alternative methods of transport. We will have to get on our bikes, or use public transport regardless of how rubbish it is or how far away it is.

Am I being unreasonable to think that people just need to get real?

**NB this is in no way a comment about the other AIBU thread about Deisel, I only just noticed that one was at the top of the page)

And Ocado use bio fuel as well..not just big upping McD's..heaven forbid, before anyone yells at me about that

expatinscotland · 28/05/2008 17:05

the other problem with biofuels is the deforestation to produce them, further exacerbating the environmental problems.

and the pesticides used to produce the crop for biofuels, too.

SummatAndNowt · 28/05/2008 17:05

Biofuels are definitely more evil.

expatinscotland · 28/05/2008 17:06

And penalising people for their behaviour, no matter how poor or disabled, isn't nannying?

If it were a free market system we wouldn't have all GB's nutcase panic attempts to 'head off' the recession that occurs in all economic cycles.

It's 'free market' in that the government has acted to bolster big business. That's not capitalism. That's fascism.

scootermum · 28/05/2008 17:07

Not if its recycled from cooking oil though surely...That said I guess there isnt that much cooking oil used to fuel the nation..

Thats the choice..clinical obesity as we all fry everything to fuel the car or climate change...

Im off to have some chips..any excuse

expatinscotland · 28/05/2008 17:08

No, because you need to produce crops to make cooking oil.

Ever seen what that's doing to Latin America just now? Specifically, the Amazon, the so-called 'World's Lungs'?

I'm here to tell you, it doesn't make for pleasant viewing.

scootermum · 28/05/2008 17:12

Will grill chips.
Gah.Uses gas.Also a precious commodity
Will have salad.

I pity the elderly.

I think my landlords are going to sell up, take their pension and the procedes from this house, and stay in Africa.

I don't blame them.

My landlord's daughter and her S. African husband are already considering moving back to Capetown because even with her £50,000 inheritance they can't afford any sort of flat for themselves to buy.

Also, she is a marine biologist and jobs are thin on the ground here for her.

Psychomum5 · 28/05/2008 17:15

surely if the oil does run out, we won;t have any other choice than go back to horses etc!!!

or AIBU

scootermum · 28/05/2008 17:17

True riven..was being flippant with the salad..I heard John Hutton yesterday suggesting that owners of older cars (ie the poorer in society) could 'choose' to sell them to avoid the proposed increased taxation on more polluting cars bought since 2001..and I had steam coming out of my ears.

oh, yes, let's penalise the poor who get to live far out just to keep the wolf from the door for not being able to buy a new car.

and then make the car they're trying to sell worth even less.

typical ignorant, London-centred tosspot drivel from him.

expatinscotland · 28/05/2008 17:21

Comparing any of this to the US is irrelevant.

We are not there, we are here.

We have no savings or pension either.

Millions are like this the world over.

gem1981 · 28/05/2008 17:22

i heard that as well psychomum -

what planet does he live on????

scootermum · 28/05/2008 17:24

Exactly..I nearly texted in to the radio!

FWIW though there is no point in having savings for your old age.I work with Older People and time and time again the ones who have scrimped and saved are penalised for it.Their savings are wiped out pretty quick, and they end up wondering what the hell it was all for..

Must go and get kids now from CM..I got off work early today and have had a selfish hour on my own for a change..

We chose our house because DP can cycle to work, I can walk to work, we can walk to the shops, pub, library, cinema, station and swimming pool, get the bus into town and in forty minutes jogging we are in the countryside.

Agree with Expat's posts.

Hyperinflation of house prices has forced young families to commute long distances. Making many of them so desperately reliant on cars.

The government's own policies have made us more vulnerable to this very predictable situation.

The people who qualify for social housing in the city centers often don't work at all. (Before I get flamed that is a generalisation and no doubt many do)

Workers - from minimum wage renters to those wealthy enough to scrabble on to the housing ladder are mostly forced to commute to work. Wasting hours of their days that could better be spent with their dcs.
