DS1 went to a party this morning, 10-12.20.

lovely party, he thought it was fab, completely different, was at a safety centre, so actually a learning party too.

BUT

I didn't give him a huge breakfast as I thought he would then fill up on party food anyway, and altho he had a drink, again, not a huge one for weeing issues in the beginning part IYGWIM.

anyhoo.....

I get there to pick him up, and it is running over....he is looking hot and tired.
the mum starts handing over boxes, and then apologizes but they haven;t had time for lunch or anything.....((first ))

we say a gracious thankyou, as he has had a good time, and then he gets a balloon and party bag, (even DS2 gats handed one), and get into the car......and DS1 opens up his 'lunchbox'.

inside is a bag of (tasteless apparently) crisps, a drink, and tons of harribo sweet, plus some toys......

and nothing else, no lunch type of food, nothing, nada.......

now, I am cross....I don't really think it is ok to send a child to a party, and they having nothing to eat or drink the entire time, and he also said there was no birthdya cake, but then, that is personal choice, but no food......

sooooo

AIBU, or am I entitled to feel a little off about my sons lack of fluids and nutrition at a party.........or am I just weird for always assuming that parties come with food!!!!

((BTW, I do no that parties have sweets, but not in a 'lunchbox', and not for them to eat on the way home before I can get proper food into him, which he did, as I told him he could have his 'lunch' as that is what I thought it was!!!))

wtf is a 'safety party' and why is everyone getting all worthy about so much better than them running around manically .. they're kids ... they're supposed to be manic and kidlike

Psychomum5 · 28/05/2008 18:23

twig....t'was at a safety centre and aimed at getting kiddies 'streetwise'....teaching them how to ring 999 for eg.

was different which is why he enjoyed it, however, I see nothing wrong in 'manic paties', DS1&2 are having a joint one very soon at quazar, which will involve them all running around shooting each other.

I was saying that DS loved the party, it was unusual, and I was pleased in fact that he now knows how to ring 999 in a calm way (well, maybe), seeing as his only experience so far of a real emmergancy is us in our car accident last october, when we were all injured....this is helping him in some ways see things from the other side.....

anyhooooo

essay aside, am still about lack of food, but agree that is is my not a general one......

a

safety party

I don't usually expect to get fed between 10 A.M. and 12.20 P.M., so wouldn't expect my dc's to be either. My first thought would be..hmmm...odd time for a party...probably means they're not providing food....

So, being one of those people who like to fill my house with food at party time, I would never do that time slot.

RustyBear · 28/05/2008 21:45

Our year 3 go to a safety centre every year - they all love it & I should think it would make a great party.

We used to have one in Reading which was free, so it just cost about £2 to take them on the train. A couple of years ago it had to close, so now we go to one in Milton Keynes - it has to be by coach & the centre charges a fee, so even with PTA support the parents are having to pay £15.
I looked at the Streetwise one in Bournemouth as it was cheaper - it looked very good, but the coach would have been more.

sleepymommy · 28/05/2008 21:50

I think a party should have food.I book them over mealtimes (12-2 or 4-6) for that reason.
I know you said it was a good party, and I'm glad your DS enjoyed it,but I must admit my first thought was a party about safety! With no cake or chocolate fingers???!!!
The kids deserved the haribo!!
(Sorry, don't mean to be horrid)

Chandon · 28/05/2008 21:58

yabu.

It´s a morning party, they could all easily have lunch at home after.

Your mistake for not feeding him proper breakfast (small mistake).

can still see you´d be annoyed though.

I always make my DSs eat bread and fruit before parties so they don´t stuff themseves with cr*p.

sparklysparkles · 28/05/2008 22:09

Hmm. My ds's would not consider it a party if there were no fluorescent orange wotsits.

But it doesn't sound nearly as annoying as parties in the southern climes I live in (where kids go to bed at 10pm). Parties here are from 4-7pm or later, and they always involve eating loads of crisps, coke and cake. The idea is that they go home for dinner at 8pm, after having stuffed 'selves with wotsits.

Still, they like it, and it's not every day.

Seashell71 · 28/05/2008 22:13

YANBU. A party with no food or drinks? Unconceivable! There should have been at least sandwiches and some fruit, it didn't have to be expensive.
