Weird event at work - should I do anything?

Just that really. So last week I received a call on my personal mobile asking for someone else I didn’t catch what they were saying so asked them to repeat it. It wasn’t a name of anyone in our house - think Harry Jones so I said sorry wrong number.
Just as I was about to hang up I thought the name sounded a bit like someone I work with so I said did you say Barry Stones to which they said yes.
So I said well I work with them but I don’t know how you would get this number. They confirmed who they were (genuine) and that they had called the number of this person’s email footer.
I am bamboozled so I report it to our IT bod.
They ask me if my no. is 07xxx etc which it is and tell me this guy has set his v/m to forward to my mobile.
He doesn’t have my mobile, I’ve never given it to him and we have work mobiles

Very weird. This would bother me. I’d go with the email suggested by @Namechangerage

Threadreplier · 02/08/2025 20:10

Ahh okay. I work in healthcare and so have my work and personal numbers on my email profile for weekends. Was contacted on my personal number today. I guess I didn't realise it was unusual in other industries as husband does the same.

MayaPinion · 02/08/2025 20:11

Even if he fancied you there is no rationale that would lead to him putting your number at the bottom of his email signature or having his calls forwarded to you when he could easily just email or call you himself. There is clearly some glitch in the matrix, human error from the admin/HR team, or the people who called sales cold callers were randomly calling in the hope of getting someone with a name common enough or close enough to get someone to plausibly think it was someone they knew - a bit like clairvoyants who go ‘I’m looking for Bob Jones…Bob Bones…Cob Nones…until eventually someone recognizes a name that was vaguely like their uncle Nob Fones who died in 1986.

treesandsun · 02/08/2025 20:17

When I wanted to set all my details in my footer of the email I couldn't get it the size and font I wanted . I copied a colleague's you had it similar to how I wanted and then changed the details to my name, number, email et cetera. He might have done something similar but it didn't change your number or it somehow defaulted back to yours.
I would email him and copy in IT/his manager and say I received a telephone call asking for you and said they got my number from the footer in your email. i've checked with IT and they've confirmed that you've got it set as my number can you change it to your own number please Is there a reason that you've used mine?

This is more ‘cancel the cheque’ than the original cancel the cheque

😂

It's totally unusual to have your personal phone number publically available as part of your job unless maybe you're self employed and that's how you get business

Do you really think we all have work phone calls to our personal phones 24/7?

WimbyAce · 02/08/2025 20:23

Tbh I couldn't get my knickers in a twist about this unless Barry does give stalker vibes. It's the kind of thing I'd have done if I fancied someone back in the day. In fact when I was 19 I did contact a client personally and we did date for a while. Obvs he should've been more careful when diverting his phone as he has been caught red handed 🤣

It’s not OP’s number on the email. It’s Barry’s. But when the caller called it, Barry’s number is diverting to OP’s personal number.

Edited

The number is not in his email signature.

Obvs Bazza did not do this on purpose. We are presuming he was pissed and cocked up the phone divert.

BoudiccaRuled · 02/08/2025 20:30

Off topic, but @Beanzmeanz when a poster puts "just that really" it meanz that the title is self explanatory...

Zanzara · 02/08/2025 20:31

What I am asking myself is, is there any way he could have accessed your number on the evening you met? It doesn't have to have been a legitimate or "fair" way to access your number. Eliminate all the possibilities, no matter how unlikely, until only one is left.

KrisAkabusi · 02/08/2025 20:31

Iris2020 · 02/08/2025 19:11

I'm surprised at people taking it so lightly.
It feels stalkers so I certainly wouldn't ask him. Instead I'd go to HR.

Its not that people are taking it lightly, it's that nobody can understand the point of it. How does it benefit Barry in any way to have his number diverted to the OP's phone? It doesn't feel stalkery because nobody can see what he could possibly get out if it. That's why people are suggesting mistake instead of malice

WonderfulWoman · 02/08/2025 20:33

Have you called the police?

I think you hit the nail on the head here. Most people answering here have no experience of transgressive or stalking behaviour, which is naturally shaping their answers. The OP is absolutely right to want an answer to this question. Better not to go direct to the person in question to find the answer if she can avoid it. I sadly have experience in this area.

BUMCHEESE · 02/08/2025 16:54

I think OP means he went onto the HR system to get her personal number

Then accidentally diverted calls to it?!

I think he has possibly accessed your number for some reason, but I’m wondering if he’s just absentmindedly put your number in when setting his voicemail, like, when I’m signing something on my birthday, I’ll write my birthday year instead of say 2025.

Just a thought. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Franklyyes · 02/08/2025 20:51

Know it’s a bit random but could someone be fishing for info - could this person be on a witness protection - I’ve worked with people who are and police said to not give info at all even if sounds genuine - bit extreme but worth considering

in their email not voice note

LegalllyBrunette · 02/08/2025 20:54

I just don't believe this person has looked at your HR file and then forwarded their calls to your personal number OP

It doesn't make sense

Dontsayyouloveme · 02/08/2025 20:55

Spottyfish · 02/08/2025 18:56

He fancied you at the social event. He’s looked your number up, copied it. Then when he’s set his phone to divert he’s accidentally pasted your number in.

Ignore my previous posts. Putting someone else’s phone number in an email, is not like writing the wrong test on your birthday.

i think it’s the PP. he’s made a very very stupid mistake.

No it doesn't make sense. It's either an almighty and very strange cock up or something more concerning.

How Barry obtained OP's personal mobile number is unknown but we do know that his voicemail was set to divert calls to it. This has been confirmed by IT who have now removed OP's number.

Dontsayyouloveme · 02/08/2025 20:58

Threadreplier · 02/08/2025 17:49

Do your work reissue mobiles? I used to get calls all the time for a person in a different department as he swapped phones at some point. I think you're over-thinkinh this. It'll be something like that, or they're phishing from linkedin.

It’s the OP’s personal phone. Not a work one

MissHollysDolly · 02/08/2025 21:02

Just ask him - it’s probably something weird. You’ll find your oersonal
number is accidently on a list somewhere on a random system and is next to his or something
