Weird event at work - should I do anything?

Just that really. So last week I received a call on my personal mobile asking for someone else I didn’t catch what they were saying so asked them to repeat it. It wasn’t a name of anyone in our house - think Harry Jones so I said sorry wrong number.
Just as I was about to hang up I thought the name sounded a bit like someone I work with so I said did you say Barry Stones to which they said yes.
So I said well I work with them but I don’t know how you would get this number. They confirmed who they were (genuine) and that they had called the number of this person’s email footer.
I am bamboozled so I report it to our IT bod.
They ask me if my no. is 07xxx etc which it is and tell me this guy has set his v/m to forward to my mobile.
He doesn’t have my mobile, I’ve never given it to him and we have work mobiles

IT have removed my number. It happened immediately following a work social so I wonder if he was drunk

Yeah I'm the same a few drinks in me and before I know I just can't help myself BAM editing my works email signature

Spottyfish · 02/08/2025 19:04

This feels a bit like the cancel the cheque thread.

Dear Barry,

I had a call on my personal phone number asking for you, and IT informed me that your phone was forwarded to my personal phone number. As it was my personal number and not a work one, I have asked IT to remove this. I’m not sure how this happened, if you have any insights please do let me know.

Best wishes,

This and CC your manager/HR? If it was innocent, he won't mind being transparent now will he...

Beanzmeanz · 02/08/2025 17:02

Yes exactly this. Whats the chance of the million different mobiles numbers out there he without seeing it or knowing it types my personal mobile in.
i don’t work with him. He’s quite high up and I’ve not been there that long. It happened the day after a work social we were both at. Where we interacted a little and he made a comment on my age

Million to one shots happen nine times out of ten.

My sister and I have had our mobile numbers for 30 years. We lived at completely different ends of the Country and got our mobile phones about 6 months apart. Her number is two digits different to mine.

Iris2020 · 02/08/2025 19:11

I'm surprised at people taking it so lightly.
It feels stalkers so I certainly wouldn't ask him. Instead I'd go to HR.

FOJN · 02/08/2025 19:18

😂😂😂

Numberninetynine · 02/08/2025 19:19

Are your email signatures managed by you, in your Outlook/email client? Ours are managed centrally and it pulls various fields including telephone and mobile from our profile. We don't type our own details into signatures. Is it possible your data has been entered in the wrong place by someone by mistake? The fact your IT dept. was able to edit this person's signature (presumably without direct access to his device) makes this highly likely.

FOJN · 02/08/2025 19:21

OP's number is not in the email signature.

AprilShowers25 · 02/08/2025 19:21

I was picturing it being his desk phone that was diverted to her mobile, I’m not sure IT would be able to check his diverts on a mobile without having the device (other than calling it and checking it goes through to OP).

I was wondering that to, is it possible for a third party to alter a divert on a mobile?

Can you even tell if a call is being diverted if you are the caller?

Edited

Barry’s number is in Barry’s email signature.
Barry’s calls are being forwarded to OPs personal phone number.

AprilShowers25 · 02/08/2025 19:32

Not been in the workplace for a while now but if we forgot to divert our desk phone when we were off, we would ask a colleague to do it.

IT will have knocked it off

IT already changed it, so there won’t be any more.

GAJLY · 02/08/2025 19:38

I'd actually report it to HR.

Is he on leave or something, asked someone to arrange the call forwarding to someone in his team or his PA and someone has ballsed up and given him the wrong number?

This, factual straight forward. Done.

usedtobeaylis · 02/08/2025 19:45

Is it definitely him who set it? We've got standard email signatures at work that IT set up. Or asked someone for someone else's number and been given the wrong information? Could be someone with a similar name to you. It's vastly more likely to be a mistake than anything sinister involving him accessing your personal data.

MargaretThursday · 02/08/2025 19:46

I don't think you got a genuine call.

First you thought it was a different name - then you said the name and they said "that's it".
They probably did say the actual name, and if you had said any name then they'd have agreed that was the one.

And how would they know which number it was being forwarded to? Let's say there was a message saying "Barry's phone is being forwarded to 079876543221" they'd never remember it, and they're not going to write it down are they?

Block the number that called and stop worrying.

The caller didn't know OP's number, they had called Barry's number and it had been forwarded to OP.

IT confirmed that Barry's v/m was set up to divert to OP's personal mobile number.

It was IT that could identify OP's number in Barry's settings, not the caller.

There is likely a very innocent explanation for this op. It's probably just a typo.

As a former accountant, I cannot tell you how unlikely this is.

Blackandwhitesue · 02/08/2025 17:18

Op is only replying to the conspiracy posts

Hello!! Two people can have the same name. Just an odd coincidence!

This thread will go on and on into at least a part 2 and 3.

had called the number of this person’s email footer.
I am bamboozled so I report it to our IT bod.
They ask me if my no. is 07xxx etc which it is and tell me this guy has set his v/m to forward to my mobile.

Maybe read the original post again. @Beanzmeanz asked her company IT department to look into this. They verified that the co-worker's work email footer was changed to the OP's personal mobile number. She couldn't have done it; it was his work email account.

The person who called OP was trying to reach her co-worker, not a random name. They got the number from his email.

Why would you think there's a conspiracy theory here? These are facts, not speculation.

As far as speculation goes,@Beanzmeanz, could it be that he wanted your personal number? That he might have used the autofill option in his email account to somehow access your info, and then neglected to change it back? Or maybe he was the person who called you? That's the only thing I can think of that would benefit him. Maybe he can now revert between your number and his in this way, and call you from an unidentified number?

It was genuine, I didn’t recognise the name because it was out of context.
They didn’t confirm a number just that it was the number on the bottom of that person’s email.
when they said who they were I knew that would make sense.
IT confirmed his vm was being forwarded to my personal number
