To completely hate the new work ick

I won’t even read the posts when people use this ridiculous word in the title

OP posts:
corlan · 01/08/2025 20:57

But you've used it in the title?

Thepeopleversuswork · 01/08/2025 21:00

It's massively over-used at the moment. Like a lot of these suddenly fasionable words, there's a bit of mission creep going on. In its proper usage it means going off someone sexually/emotionally because of a glimpse at some of their behaviour which is a turn-off.

But its now extrapolated out to everything from getting a bad feeling about a potential job to disliking an area.

I can't get as excited as you about it though. It has its place.

popcornpower2025 · 01/08/2025 21:02

Language evolves, new words come in to usage all the time. Keep up or don't but ridiculous to moan about it

Simonjt · 01/08/2025 21:03

Its similar to yuk, unless you’re three or younger you really shouldn’t be saying it.

FinancialThyme · 01/08/2025 21:08

I don't think it's new, is it? I remember it being used when I was in primary school.

Which was when? 5 years ago? 15 years ago? 30 years ago?

It was 5 years ago. I'm obviously 12... 🙄

I remember it being used probably around 2003? Is that ok with you?

It's not new.

R0ckandHardPlace · 01/08/2025 21:16

It’s definitely not new. My adult daughters used it when they were kids.

nomas · 01/08/2025 21:16

It’s great, I wish it had been around when I was in my 20s so I could articulate why I didn’t like a man.

Do you hate it because it’s mostly used by women about men?

ilovesooty · 01/08/2025 21:16

I'd never seen it used before it became prevalent on here. It sounds pretty juvenile to me.

IlovePhilMitchell · 01/08/2025 21:18

I think it’s the perfect word for what it describes and it’s been used for years. What word would you use instead?

Screamingabdabz · 01/08/2025 21:18

I actually think it describes the feeling perfectly. It’s a good word.

Dangermoo · 01/08/2025 21:19

Well best leave those of us, with a sense of humour, to enjoy the threads.

Empress13 · 01/08/2025 21:19

Thought your title meant you hated your new job !

Well, women have been used to being on the receiving end of men's observations, in a woman, so I'm happy to return the pisstaking.

BusySittingDown · 01/08/2025 21:22

You need to edit your title.

It's not new, it's been going donkeys!

I like it. It's the perfect description of things that are...well...icky.

Stichintime · 01/08/2025 21:22

For those who remember it from days gone past, I certainly remember things being icky or yicky when I was a child, a few decades ago. I think 'I've got the ick' is the newer version, although that itself has been in common usage for a good few years. I prefer 'yick' myself.

I know it’s my problem but you know when a word gives you the heebie jeebies? I don’t know why

OP posts:
VaseofViolets · 01/08/2025 21:25

It’s juvenile and silly.

MylesAndMyles · 01/08/2025 21:47

Work ick?

You're using the term "heebie jeebies", whilst moaning about the word "ick". 🙄

VictorianChic · 01/08/2025 23:28

“Large of nork” is the one I can’t bear.

meganorks · 01/08/2025 23:29

Your title is so bad, I thought someone at your work was giving you the ick.

I think it does the job of describing a situation really well. So have no problems with 'ick'.

I'm more annoyed by people using words with very specific meanings in the wrong context. Eg saying something gives them 'anxiety' when actually what they mean is they don't like it or don't want to do it.

Me too. I genuinely clicked to see what this new "work ick" was.
