phone calls in neighbours gardens

Why do people insist on making lengthy phone calls from their gardens? I want to enjoy my garden not listen to people talking about their jobs and their love live.
If they don't want their family to hear them why do they think it's ok for strangers to hear them?
So anti-social.

Calls on loudspeaker are so much more annoying than normal calls or normal chats between two people - on trains, on buses and in gardens. I don’t know why

It’s smacks of performance to me.

I work from my garden when the weather's nice. Teams calls, work calls, just calls in general.

Its my garden. Talking in it in the middle of the day is not anti social

Rallentanda · 15/08/2025 14:54

I think like a lot of things, it's not that I'd want to say 'never do this' but I would like to live in a world where people realise how antisocial it is.

Hearing someone else's business broadcast across several gardens just isn't great.

It's perfectly within their rights, but I'd be getting the lawnmower, strimmer or leafblower out every single time.

Imagine being that petty with so much spare time..

No signal in our house so no option really!

Don't you have the facility to set your phone for WiFi calling. That's what I had to do to my work phone to avoid having to stand on the upstairs loo.

columnatedruinsdomino · 15/08/2025 14:56

People talking in their own gardens. Whatever next.

I work in my garden too. It's just that my work is silent. So if my neighbour starts taking and making calls, that affects me.

Imagine not being aware that sound affects how people live.

Agree.

They might not get reception in their house.

I love listening to other people's conversations.

I got one of those bird feeders with a camera on it and I attached it to a tree in my yard so that I can watch all the little birds come and eat. It has a motion sensor and it also captures when my neighbor's husband comes out and stands in between our houses and talks on the phone. 🤦‍♀️

Hiptothisjive · 15/08/2025 14:58

It’s so weird. Whenever my very loud neighbours do this it is weirdly coincidental that it’s the exact time I go to now cut the grass.

BauhausOfEliott · 15/08/2025 14:59

People are entitled to hold a conversation in their own gardens. Do you also think they're being inconsiderate if they sit in their garden with a mate and have a chat over coffee? How about using a lawnmower? What about kids playing, are they allowed to talk while they doing that, or do they have to remain silent?

Look, in an ideal world I'd want total silence in my own garden - who wouldn't? But it's mad to say that people are being unreasonable to speak outdoors on their own property, whether it's on a phone or in person. Gardens are not an unreasonable location for a conversation.

Well when I was working earlier the neighbours kids were on the trampoline, their dog was barking and the people across the road from me had their music playing. So I dont think my 3 5 minute calls impacted anyone's day.

LiveLikeaCat · 15/08/2025 15:01

Argh my neighbour does this too: constant work calls in the garden in his loud booming voice. He will literally speak to one colleague then be straight on to the next one bitching about the first! Even noise cancelling headphones won’t block it out.

Expecting other people to be completely silent in their own gardens because you don't like hearing their voice also 'just isn't great'.

A garden is part of someone's home and they are entitled to speak in it. You can't expect them not to talk in it. As I'm sitting here now, I can hear my neighbour and her sister chatting together while they sit in my neighbour's garden - ultimately, I'd rather not hear them, but I don't think it's antisocial of them to sit and chat on their own bloody patio on a summer afternoon!

Omg. I’d hate you as my neighbour. Don’t you care how this impacts others?

Silly me. Of course you don’t

I'll go tell my neighbours kids to go in then too shall I?

Don't be soft

I honestly cannot believe this is even a conversation!

How dare people use their gardens to talk in!

JLou08 · 15/08/2025 15:31

You sound very entitled and miserable. Maybe they also want to enjoy their garden whilst talking to someone else. What makes your wants more important? From my garden on this sunny day I can hear adults talking and children laughing and screaming (water fight I'm guessing). Joyful sounds.

wizzywig · 15/08/2025 15:34

It'd be so funny to do things like, eg, post a get well card, birthday card, give them recommendations for servides following their conversations and sign it anonymous

Are you saying your right to take loud phone calls outside trumps someone’s right to do their garden maintenance?

Theres a big difference between chatting irl, and loud zoom calls
