Yahya fastest rising boy name in UK

PurpleChrayn · 01/08/2025 11:48

According to the figures from 2024, the name Yahya is the fastest rising name in popularity for boys.

AIBU to worry that this is in honour of Yahya Sinwar, who masterminded the October 7 slaughter?

AIBU to be fearful for my future and that of my children as a Jewish family in the UK with strong ties to Israel?

It has made it into the top 100 for the first time.

I think you are over-reacting somewhat.

JHound · 01/08/2025 12:13

Link?

Zabbeezee · 01/08/2025 12:17

Oliver is very popular too.

Is it a tribute to puritan Oliver Cromwell, who slaughtered the Irish?

Jojimoji · 01/08/2025 12:19

The 500 and something babies given this name could be named after the actor, the footballer, parents just like the name..who knows.

tinygingermum · 01/08/2025 12:21

I do think you are overreacting, it will be popular only in certain areas among certain communities. For example Mohammed is the number one boys name, but I don’t know a single child with the name, but know of 3 baby Jacks.

KrisAkabusi · 01/08/2025 12:21

If there was one boy named Yahya in 2023 and there's three now that's a 200% increase, which will top any list. It doesn't mean that there's going to be thousands of them running around in a few years time though.

JHound · 01/08/2025 12:26

Also why on earth assume it’s Yahya Sinwar?

I know a young Yahya named after this beautiful speciman of man:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahya_Abdul-Mateen_II

Letsbe · 01/08/2025 15:26

Yahya is obviously after the best Eurovision song ever Yahya Ding dong. Go Iceland.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/08/2025 15:47

I think there’s no evidence that that is the reason. And it might still be a tiny number.

I realise that it’s a very worrying time but it’s just a name - they do come and go in popularity.

TigerRag · 01/08/2025 15:50

My first thought was Yaya Toure. And the I realised he spells it differently

InterIgnis · 01/08/2025 16:22

First thought was Yahya Efendi.

Yahya/Jahja is a common Islamic name. In English it’s ’John’.

He's indeed a fine specimen of a man ☺️

MorphandMindy · 01/08/2025 16:36

Way more likely to be a footballer who has inspired a wave of popularity for the name. Middle Eastern politics is everywhere and upsetting, but not to the point of inspiring generations of British babies named after faraway political figures most adults have never heard of.

I wouldn't waste effort drumming up things like baby names to be loudly and provocatively worried about; it's giving regular Jewish families a bad rep IMO. There is real, dangerous and genuine antisemitism out there to be concerned with, but if you're looking for victimhood, this ain't it, guv.

LadyCankleOfGrantham · 01/08/2025 16:37

I didn’t know that was his name and yes that’s very worrying. There’s a lot of hate for Jewish people since October 7th (and I don’t wanna hear about it being to do with Israel, that’s a red herring) and I am worried for your community Flowers

Oliver is very popular too.

Is it a tribute to puritan Oliver Cromwell, who slaughtered the Irish?

He didn’t do it less than 2 years ago though did he, which has resulted in a 500% rise in Irish hate crimes?

JohnTheRevelator · 01/08/2025 17:11

How do you even pronounce it?!

hoarahloux · 01/08/2025 17:24

It's a lovely name. There are lots of people named Yahya who aren't terrorists.

Muffsies · 01/08/2025 17:25

There's been a rise in racism and prejudice against religion and ethnicities across the board. As always happens when there's a rise in right-wing and isolationist politics. It is a worry.

I can't see a definite indication that is the cause of the rise in popularity of this name though.

GnusSitOnCanoes · 01/08/2025 17:27

You are both unreasonable and racist. I hope that helps.

Yabberwok · 01/08/2025 17:43

Wow and I was sat here thinking how old fashioned the top names were. As Noah is the top boys name hopefully it inspires an up lift in the UK ship building industry

YourFavouriteFalafel · 01/08/2025 17:45

I answered you when you asked this question on another Islamic names thread, which you have obviously chosen to ignore and have decided to try and whip up a frenzy instead, for whatever reason.

Yahya has always been a popular name in the UK and is a beautiful name for a child. In Islam, Yahya was a miracle birth - a gift from God, with the name being chosen by God.

LuckyHare · 01/08/2025 23:17

I'm Jewish and it doesn't bother me at all. Honestly you need to get over yourself OP. Yahya is a lovely name and there are are several famous people with the name.

Isittimeformynapyet · 01/08/2025 23:28

Well, these responses have certainly put my mind at rest OP. How about you?

Or are you going to ignore everyone again and start a third thread about it?
