Yahya fastest rising boy name in UK

PurpleChrayn · 01/08/2025 11:48

According to the figures from 2024, the name Yahya is the fastest rising name in popularity for boys.

AIBU to worry that this is in honour of Yahya Sinwar, who masterminded the October 7 slaughter?

AIBU to be fearful for my future and that of my children as a Jewish family in the UK with strong ties to Israel?

I tutored a really lovely, well-mannered boy last year who is called Yahya. He’s going on to be an electrician, not a terrorist. He couldn’t have been politer or more appreciative of our lessons.

Never been to a darts match where there hasn't been crowds singing Yaya/Kolo.
That would certainly be my first thought

Way more likely to be a footballer who has inspired a wave of popularity for the name. Middle Eastern politics is everywhere and upsetting, but not to the point of inspiring generations of British babies named after faraway political figures most adults have never heard of.

I wouldn't waste effort drumming up things like baby names to be loudly and provocatively worried about; it's giving regular Jewish families a bad rep IMO. There is real, dangerous and genuine antisemitism out there to be concerned with, but if you're looking for victimhood, this ain't it, guv.

Um, what?

Why should ‘regular’ Jewish families (whatever that means - I’m assuming you mean Jewish families whose politics you agree with) have their reputations affected by the views of an individual Jewish poster whose attitudes you don’t agree with?

Are you suggesting that if one Jewish person does something that automatically implies something about every other Jewish person as well? Are you suggesting it’s reasonable for people to think that way, it’s to be expected and nothing can be done about it?

Are you threatening OP that she should not express views you don’t agree with or the wider Jewish community will be punished?

You sound anti-Semitic and also not all that bright.

Oliver is very popular too.

Is it a tribute to puritan Oliver Cromwell, who slaughtered the Irish?

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Masmavi · 01/08/2025 23:51

No, you don’t need to be fearful but I think you know that. Yahya is the Arabic name for John the Baptist, who is considered a prophet in Islam. Are you afraid that everyone who names their son John is a Christian fundamentalist? 🙄
Seems like you either are a troll sitting back laughing at everyone or genuinely a Jewish person but one who wants to encourage discrimination against Muslims. Leave people alone to name their children as they wish without suggesting that it makes them an admirer of terrorism. Or if you are a troll, get a life.

Jesus, calm down. I’m saying politics is vastly unlikely to be the reason a baby name is popular. Most people all the way over here simply don’t care enough.

There are real problems in this world - including those specifically aimed at Jewish people regardless of their connection to the state of Israel - but this kind of hyperbolic angsting over baby names is the type of groundless paranoia that catches negative attention and risks trivialising the dangers of genuine antisemitism.

I meant “regular Jewish people” as opposed to “those who make other people’s baby names choices out to be a personal attack on them”, and it doesn’t matter what your politics are on that. Maybe I should have said “regular mature adults” but I suppose you wouldn’t recognise yourself in that group either.

“Are you threatening OP” would you ever cop yourself on? 🙄 this is tedious muppetry of the first order.

YANBU. It’s a total disgrace.

These people are morons, glorifying violence and terror.

Right, because the name Yahya didn’t exist before October 7th and this bloke whom most people haven’t heard of…

MumofCandRA · 02/08/2025 04:18

That's called paranoia. What you've done is add 2+2 and got 5.

Don't be paranoid - it's not good for you.

I think you’ve jumped to an erroneous conclusion. Do you also think that parents who choose the name Benjamin are naming their sons after Netanyahu? 🙄

BlueJuniper94 · 02/08/2025 05:55

There could be something in what OP is suggesting, it is suddenly very popular. I think it might have something to do with that drone footage that circulated of his "heroes" death - it is a significant spike in popularity. It might be nothing. But I wonder if it could be something.

If there was a sudden spike - it's possible? But there isn't

BallerinaRadio · 02/08/2025 06:00

As must other people have said, you've made a massive leap here. Dropping the post just before midnight, not coming back to it... It just looks like mainly an attempt to stir the pot. I wager that most people have never heard of this man.

BlueJuniper94 · 02/08/2025 06:17

I had never heard of him until that drone footage went viral and he was lauded as an absolute martyr - the tone of that discourse makes me think at least 2 or 3 of these names may have been to some extent inspired by this. I could be wrong. But I'd be surprised. The fact this guy appeared on my radar makes me think this was a big deal. But who knows. I genuinely don't. I'm only speculating. I don't think anyone would need to be more fearful as a result, tensions are already pretty high. I think it's kinda gaslighting to tell someone they are so wrong in the way some posters here have. But then, they might be right, it might be a troll stirring the pot. They haven't been back...

Evergreen21 · 02/08/2025 06:36

Get over yourself, you are well aware you are being incendiary.

It's a nice name and I considered it for my own son in 2017, there are lots of variations in the spelling. I didn't go for it as I don't like the way it sounded in his dad's Scottish accent. I also like the name Yasser but that didn't mean just because I'm muslim I was naming him after Arafat. Dh said no because it rhymed with gasser and he foresaw out boy would be windy.

YourFavouriteFalafel · 02/08/2025 11:51

I see the Telegraph has decided to run this non-story today. God forbid they actually talk to British Muslims or research the significance of Yahya in Islam or look at data highlighting the popularity of the name since the 90's in the UK (more so than any other western country!) or look at better known Yayha's in the world...

C'est la vie.

How do you even pronounce it?!
