When I'm Prime Minister I'm going to make this a priority (sod the economy).
No Halloween stuff in the shops in bloody July, nothing Chritmas until after Halloween, or preferably bonfire night. And please make bonfire night an actual thing again.
Chritmas starts so early now I'm already over it by September.
Is anybody with me?

You have my vote!

ImAPreMadonna · 01/08/2025 11:23

I mean, I’d ban Christmas till Dec but other than that, you’ve got my vote too.

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/08/2025 11:23

I saw Halloween stuff in a shop last week. And last December I saw Easter stuff in a shop between Christmas and new years. It’s fucking mad. Mad.

phoenixrosehere · 01/08/2025 11:25

Where do you live where you’re seeing Halloween stuff?

Haven’t seen it myself. Usually see Christmas stuff first before I see Halloween anything.

WhatNoRaisins · 01/08/2025 11:25

I love Christmas and Halloween but completely agree with this. I'm trying to get better at living in the moment and appreciating the good bits of all the seasons rather than obsessing over a few.

DappledThings · 01/08/2025 11:26

Absolutely. Except I don't think you are going far enough. No Christmas stuff in shops until the start of Advent and it has to remain in place all the way through till Twelfth Night.

Tk maxx here in Ireland has had Halloween stuff since June. dunnes stores has started putting out their Halloween stuff this week. kids are not even back to school yet. even before they finished shops had back to school out. its shocking I think. life goes quick enough. I am with you no Halloween till Sept no Xmas till Nov.

Our Costco is selling Halloween decorations now! 😂

Pootles34 · 01/08/2025 11:36

Noooo leave bonfire night alone, I only like it because it's a nice un-commercialised thing! I guess because the American's don't have it?

tripleginandtonic · 01/08/2025 11:37

And summer clothes available during the summer holidays. And school clothes only allowed in shops the last week of Aug.

Needmorelego · 01/08/2025 11:39

Hmmm 🤔
I'm thinking of making some Christmas decorations this year to sell at a couple of events.
If I am going to make it worth it I will need to start organising it now.

KimberleyClark · 01/08/2025 11:43

I hate the way you see “Back to School” displays in shops and supermarkets in July when the poor kids have only just broken up.

Absolutely. Every year I can't find school uniform in the right sizes at the end of August when I actually need it and I refuse to buy it in June because I don't want to be part of the problem.

RabbitsRock · 01/08/2025 11:45

I work in retail so well used to seeing Halloween stuff appearing in August & even some Christmas stuff. The main tree is usually up before the end of September. I don’t mind so much but think it’s a shame for the children & takes away the magic somewhat. We always joke about the Easter eggs appearing the second the last few Christmas sale bits have been sold!

Ifailed · 01/08/2025 11:48

Shops aren't stupid, they put this crap out as they know there are enough idiots who'll buy it.

Cynic17 · 01/08/2025 11:51

Yes, but let's postpone Christmas to December, when it actually starts (ideally 24th)!

floppybit · 01/08/2025 11:52

Agree, aggressive commercialisation of these celebrations means businesses pedal as much related shit as they possibly can as early as they possibly can, making it impossible to just enjoy the moment. By the time Christmas arrives it feels like it’s already over. We are always chasing the next thing, it’s awful

PaddlingSwan · 01/08/2025 11:57

Totally agree and think it just devalues the meaning of each season/event.
In some ways it would be psychologically better to delay selling goods until nearer the time as this would create more of a "desire" or "need".
However, I have the same opinion about food offerings. Who wants strawberries at Christmas or asparagus in the autumn? There appears to be no more cadence to the year these days.
Yet the very worst thing I have experienced in the UK was the introduction of Sunday trading, especially when I was shopping with my mother on a Sunday and it was Christmas Eve! Just felt totally and utterly wrong. Just because you can does not mean you should.

grafittiartist · 01/08/2025 12:17

Couldn’t agree more!

As a former retail worker that's true.
If it's there then people buy it.
Don't want to buy it..... just ignore it.

lazyarse123 · 01/08/2025 12:25

They've had Halloween stuff in the Range in Harrogate for a couple of weeks.
It's far too early and I too especially hate seeing the back to school stuff it feels a bit mean for the kids and my kids are all adults now.
I am a massive Christmas fan but I think seeing it in November would be okay. I love a Christmas shop.

ginasevern · 01/08/2025 12:57

You wouldn't be very popular with the people who work in those sectors. Card manufacturers, toy manufacturers, Christmas trees, fancy food stuffs, chocolates, decorations, gifts and all sorts of small independent businesses. Many of those industries make most of their annual revenue thanks to special events like Christmas, Halloween, Mother's Day etc. Staff get welcome overtime and often extra staff are taken on too. They've got to get the stuff out early otherwise it would logistically impossible and supply wouldn't fit demand.

DappledThings · 01/08/2025 13:04

This is what artificially drives the demand and is so annoying. Shops sell school uniform in July so people think they have to buy it then. So there is "demand" in July that has been forced. If they stocked it at the end of August when it's actually needed then it would still sell in the same quantities but wouldn't be forcing people to think they need it early.

Same for mince pies in October and Easter eggs in January.
