To not understand how someone can provide guidance on a different calorie weight loss amount for "non binary individuals"

I am trying to lose weight and was doing some googling and saw this webpage and I don't understand... I will upload a screenshot but it says "minimum calorie intake is "1200 for women, 1350 for non binary individuals and 1500 for men"

Surely non-binary is an identity not a biological reality and therefore the weight loss calorie level wouldn't be different ? I can't think of anything that would affect their calorie needs differently?.

I guess they could mean "intersex"?

Brilliant. Hilarious.

People who have DSDs are either male or female. Theres no 'intersex'.

Ah, ok, so they would just use the male /female calorie guides.

It’s a mad attempt at inclusivity for no good reason. They’ve literally just split the difference between man and woman and assigned that amount to non-binary.

Oh yeah, so they have! I was clearly too tired to figure out the maths.

It just makes no sense- there's nothing different I can think about about being non binary that would change the minimum calorie level. In that sense it's almost dangerous advice as males who are non binary would think they could drop to 1350 even though there's no scientific basis for this

Someone has got to have done that as a pisstake 🤣

soupyspoon · 31/07/2025 20:01

Ive gone into their website, cant find that exact page but on another page about diet they're wittering on about how your calorie requirement is dependent on activity (correct), age (correct), gender (erm no, your calorie requirement is not predicated on an internal personality concept of yourself).

Who are these people?

No idea.... it just showed up in a Google search and baffled me!

😂😂😂😂 that is priceless. And of course ridiculous. They’ve gone in the middle. More stuff like this is showing the world how blatantly absurd the whole farce is.

You just never know atm. It’s almost impossible to tell nowadays what is parody and what some people actually think. Men magicking in to women being one of those things.

It's brilliant, isn't it! We had a thread on it (or similar) a while back Grin

People who are born intersex are usually raised as one or three other, but to say they're either male or female is pretty offensive. It's entirely separate to the trans debate, if that's the angle you're taking.
A good friend of mine was initially raised male as that was how the doctors believed them to be (mainly going on what they looked like externally) but as they got older it was very apparent they weren't. They have physiological aspects of both, though they've always felt themselves that they were female rather than male, from young childhood.

It’s factually correct. You can be a male with a DSD or a female with a DSD, but the term intersex is outdated.

Do you really think its ok to tell someone else that they're not allowed to call themselves by the name of the medical condition they've been told they have since birth? And how exactly do they determine which gender, given the doctors couldn't?
What a breathtakingly arrogant post.

NebulouslyContemporaneous · 01/08/2025 07:28

And how exactly do they determine which gender, given the doctors couldn't?

Doctors can tell sex. Easily. It's just that in some cases a simple visual inspection of a child may not make their correct sex obvious, so errors may be made that are only corrected when problems start to set in, often at puberty.

And I don't think the poster was trying to tell someone with a DSD what to call themselves, she was just pointing out that, as a diagnostic term, it is inaccurate and outdated.

PruthePrune · 01/08/2025 07:29

They are special calories for special people.

I once taught a student who wanted me to use the 'N' word to describe her. I refused.

Yes doctors can tell which sex a person is even if their exterior genitalia is malformed or dysfunctional.

The medical condition is DSD and you're either male with a DSD or female with a DSD.

ActuallyADoctor · 01/08/2025 07:37

I agree with you hibernating . DSD / intersex is a different thing to the gender identity debate that causes such (ironically binary) debate on MN. Clearly the issue highlighted by the OP is ridiculous nonsense. But please consider the impact on individuals when applying a reductive prism to a complex issue.

Edited - but it’s not offensive to say they’re either male or female, how can it be offensive, it’s true.
