To donate to alleviate hunger in Gaza

Bunion8 · 31/07/2025 11:32

I’ve received many emails from organisation on this topic. The last one, today from Action against Hunger asking for donations for support to alleviate the suffering.

it seems to me that even if I donate, the remedies needed are political ones as it’s not lack of money that’s the problem.

I’m not trying to make this about Israel/Gaza (and I ask that people please don’t hijack this post). I’m genuinely asking if you think that money donated makes a difference as I’d like to help but am at a loss to know what to do.

YABU - the money donated does help
YANBU - sending money doesn’t solve the problem

The money most probably goes straight to Hamas.

LadyKenya · 31/07/2025 15:49

I understand your dilemma. I would really hope that monetary donations do help, but ultimately I think that you are right to assert that the remedy is indeed a political affair.

Rocknrollstar · 31/07/2025 16:25

You could always donate to the starving in Sudan instead.

Or both? Have you donated to both?

TaupeLemur · 31/07/2025 17:11

donate to aid agencies who are actually there. Ignore the comments from people claiming that it makes no difference, it makes a difference.
your money, your choice and if this rather give money to a cat shelter or not at all, that’s your decision.

No, it’s the fact that Israel are not letting aid in that’s the problem, but hopefully political pressure is mounting as more and more photos get out ( despite reporting restrictions) of starving children dying in a ‘famine’ that is entirely made by Israel.
You say you don’t want this thread to be ‘political’ but the Gazan’s aren’t starving to death because it didn’t rain enough for crops, they’re starving to death because food and aid is being with held by Israel.

This

GentleSheep · 31/07/2025 17:21

It's doubtful it will help. It could end up as food pallets sitting in the sun spoiling or food taken by Hamas!

And the solution involves politics, so hence it is political. Either way, it has to end.

UK registered NGOs, such as Action Against Hunger as mentioned in the OP are highly regulated and if the money ‘just went to Hamas’ - a proscribed terrorist organisation in the UK - there would massive legal ramifications. These organisations face challenges in access, but they certainly do not hand over money to terrorist organisations.

I see. I understand now. Did they perhaps mean aid would be intercepted by Hamas?

tangerinemagic · 31/07/2025 19:18

Trump said this week ‘’millions have been donated let’s just ‘hope’ is gets to them’’ if the president of the United States is hitting and hoping what chance do we have knowing where the money ends up and whether the aid will reach them.

i think the claim that Hamas is stealing aid and food might be propaganda.

im trying to attach a headline from the New York Times from 26th July 2025, but I can’t insert a pic.

Here is what the words say

The CEO of AAH is paid over $300,000.

So yeah, you'd be VVVVU to give those misery merchants any moneym

Unless you fancy paying for his private jet.

If you had kept up with the news, you would have known this was refuted… So go and find another line to keep churning out

SuburbanCrofter · 06/08/2025 22:42

We are in the UK. The CEO of AAH is unlikely to be paid in USD. Neither are they the CEO - a quick search will show that the job title for this post in the UK is Executive Director.

But presumably you wouldn't be aware of that, being a bot.

Jean Michael Grand is paid in excess of £130k. He is the UK CEO/director/chief bottle washer, whatever you want to call him.

AAH is a global network, the US branch oversees most of the worldwide organisation. Hence the reason I mentioned the US CEO.

But presumably, you wouldn't be aware of that.

I can’t personally vouch for AAH but I don’t have an issue with the CEOs of non profits getting paid well. It is a job that requires experience and attracting professional staff is critical so that the organisation can be run effectively and do it’s job well.

On the other hand the CEO of Shell Uk has an 8 million pay package
The Tesco UK CEO nearly earns 10 million.

Non profits actually make life better for people. And the people who work in them deserve to earn fair (but not excessive) salaries.

Inchworms · 07/08/2025 00:31

Ain’t nobody flying private on the regular on $300k just saying

I know what you mean OP, it almost seems beyond money. But if you can do a bit of money, it can’t hurt

Wordsmithery · 07/08/2025 00:31

I take the view that I'd rather give money than not. Choose your charity carefully - some have lower overheads than others.

Enrichetta · 07/08/2025 00:41

I have been donating - and will continue to do so - to:

  • Medecins sans frontiers’ Gaza fund
  • Save the Children’s Gaza fund
  • MAP/Medical Aid for Palestinians
These are regulated charities and the idea of them giving funds to Hamas is preposterous.

They blatantly are stealing food/ aid. They are evil but made of skin and bone also. Not sure why they wouldn’t also be starving.

Still you’re not going to stop trying to feed 9 people because 1 evil person gets fed. You’re not inflicting harm there, your doing something good.

But yes I agree the main issue is getting the aid in. Money clearly doesn’t solve that. I have no idea why we can’t just airdrop. All the countries club together and tell Isreal we are doing this.

Mossstitch · 07/08/2025 01:10

Airdrop cannot get anywhere near enough volume in, it gave the figures on TV which i cannot remember but were miniscule in comparison to lorries. It also said 86% of aid is not getting in (which if I remembered rightly the figures were from the UN.)..................its just horrendous 😥
