to buy toiletries at the airport?

I haven’t been abroad for some time. I haven’t got any clear plastic bags of the size airports give you to put your liquids in to go through security. Rather than risk them not fitting in the bag, I plan on waiting till I get to departures and just buying all my shampoo, suncream etc there.
Now I’ve thought of it, I don’t know why everyone doesn’t do this. Is there a snag in my plan somewhere? Travelling with Ryanair. Will save a space in my carry-on for the toiletries (no hold bag).
Thanks!

Superdrug and Sainsbury's sell pretty cheap clear plastic zip up bags that are the approved size for liquids in the hold - only a few pounds.

I tend to decant existing atuff as I don't want to rebuy the face creams and serums I have as they are not cheap at all - even the minis. Buy a few small pots and bottles from Superdrug to reuse as they will serve you well.

I use them on UK holidays and when I go to France on the Eurostar as well - because who wants to be lugging full size bottles of face cream or shampoo around with them for a few days holiday, regardless of restrictions.

You don't need to do this at my local airport anymore and can take liquids in bottles upto 2 litres. Previously I would order a click and collect from boots to pick up after security. The prices were the same I think.

You won't get them back through any EU airport. They can not do over 100ml at the moment in hand luggage.

"I don't know why everyone else doesn't do this"

Um, because it's expensive and hugely wasteful? There's a huge mark up on price at the airport and you'll use, what, 5% of each of the things you buy, and chuck the rest? By the time you've bought antiperspirant, suncream, bodywash, shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste that adds up.

You realise it usually includes anything vaguely liquidy - if you wear make up that includes perfume, mascara, moisturiser, foundation, etc? Are you going to buy all those new at the airport too?

for the sake of a clear plastic bag (I've used both food bags and a shein one) I'd rather save the money.

DuesToTheDirt · 30/07/2025 20:12

Which airport are you flying from? Some are now scrapping the liquid limits.

toastandegg · 30/07/2025 20:31

I buy travel size in boots after security, shampoo, sunscreen, deodorant and toothpaste- it’s usually on a 4 for 3 offer, I don’t use make up etc when away and find there’s very little if any left over so no waste

Ponderingwindow · 30/07/2025 20:33

Why doesn’t everyone do it? Because they don’t stock products that everyone can use. Some of us can’t even buy our toiletries at the local supermarket.

Just buy a plastic bag? Cheaper than the premium they charge to buy in the airport. How are you planning to get them home?

I agree. You can buy them on Amazon and ebay.

Just put everything in your checked luggage

So you didn’t read the OP, no checked bag!

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 30/07/2025 20:44

Gatwick you don’t need to put in plastic bags now. They’ve updated their scanners. But the weight/size is the same I think?

BashfulClam · 30/07/2025 20:48

I take dettol bar soap, solid shampoo, solid deodorant etc to cut down on space as bottles take up space. Also no need to separate them .

MadKittenWoman · 30/07/2025 20:49

I did this this year and it’s much better. However, bear in mind that not all airports still have the plastic bag rule- in Bristol, for example, you can just stuff your carry on with bottles under 100 ml.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/07/2025 20:49

They give bags at the airport

I take perfume etc

but now buy shampoo condition shower gel etc there in supermarket with any bread etc I buy

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/07/2025 20:50

Very costly at airport

bostonchamps · 30/07/2025 20:51

GucciBear · 30/07/2025 19:32

As soon as my holiday is booked I start buying shampoo etc. and putting them in my case. Much cheaper because I can spend on good offers.

Cool story bro

Nn9011 · 30/07/2025 20:54

I do this, it counts as duty free so doesn't need to fit in the bag to go on the plane. If doing a click and collect order just order it for a couple of days before you fly to make sure it's ready.

functionoverform · 30/07/2025 21:19

Second checking the airport security page. I did the ages old tradition of chugging the rest of my water bottle at security and the bloke told me to stop and I could take water through now ( Heathrow). No bag needed, all liquids left inside.

Laura95167 · 30/07/2025 21:34

Buy a freezer bag? Like at a supermarket or aldi or B&M or primark.

The price is the reasons other's dont do it. If youre doing that why not get them at a local supermarket at your final destination?

Collect from boots in the airport. Order online beforehand.

pontivex · 30/07/2025 21:38

I travel a lot with hand baggage only and it’s never been a problem fitting stuff in the sandwich bag. I do it at home though so I know what I need to rethink.
I either take miniatures from boots or decant and alongside foundation, lip balm, mascara, toothpaste deodorant it fits no problem. If DH is with me then I commandeer most of his bag too…
Just buy some 20 by 20 sandwich bags (not massive freezer bags!) or get some off a neighbour/friend and do some trial runs at home.
if I have to ditch something then I can usually work around it or buy that one thing at destination.
If you are staying in a hotel they usually have miniatures anyway so I don’t bother bringing those bits.

It actually does matter! I have been hauled up on this before for having a plastic bag that’s “too big”! Or I guess I’ll say it doesn’t matter as long as all your stuff fits into one airport sized bag 🤣 I argued in vain that this was a tax on being female, especially as the bloody bag is mostly taken up with my oestrogel!

You can put your oestrogel separately in the tray. Make sure that you have your prescription handy (on the nhs app) and you’ll be fine.

TartanMammy · 30/07/2025 22:01

We went to Tenerife a couple of weeks ago, you can now take 2 litres of liquid through. You don't need to separate it either.
Not sure if all airports are the same though, this was Edinburgh.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 30/07/2025 22:05

Where are you going? Just buy it there (I usually pack travel toothpaste and shower gel).
