to buy toiletries at the airport?

I haven’t been abroad for some time. I haven’t got any clear plastic bags of the size airports give you to put your liquids in to go through security. Rather than risk them not fitting in the bag, I plan on waiting till I get to departures and just buying all my shampoo, suncream etc there.
Now I’ve thought of it, I don’t know why everyone doesn’t do this. Is there a snag in my plan somewhere? Travelling with Ryanair. Will save a space in my carry-on for the toiletries (no hold bag).
Thanks!

I think the major issue might be cost; The suggestion from PPs of buying when you get there might be better.
Also depends a bit on what kind accommodation you’re going to and how long for; Self-catering for two weeks you”ll probably need a lot of things but in a moderately decent hotel for a short break you probably be provided with soap, shampoo, hand cream and possibly other products. It could be worth waiting to see what you actually need before you go shopping. Also, local Superdrug equivalents and supermarkets may have a travel-size section like you find here so you’ll have enough while you’re there but not waste any not being able to bring things home.
Then again, in tourist areas some shops do charge over the odds for things like sunscreen knowing they’ve got a captive market.

Its not the cheapest way of doing it but I sometimes do it.
More usually I will buy them in a supermarket when I arrive in my destination

This is what I do, much cheaper, Boots at the airport is ridiculous prices.

Britneyfan · 30/07/2025 19:30

I travel a lot as have family living in different parts of the U.K. and pretty much always do this! Not only is it more convenient, they also often do special travel sizes of stuff that you don’t normally find in the average store. It’s not any more expensive than normal Boots but I appreciate Superdrug etc are sometimes cheaper. Honestly I’d rather pay a bit extra and have the convenience of getting what I need at the airport.

The only potential flaws in your cunning plan as far as I can see is 1. You’re still going to have the same issue on your way back unless you plan on dumping your toiletries or using them all up while you’re away and 2. You need to make sure you get to the airport in plenty of time to faff about toiletry shopping!

GucciBear · 30/07/2025 19:32

As soon as my holiday is booked I start buying shampoo etc. and putting them in my case. Much cheaper because I can spend on good offers.

JackGrealishsCalves · 30/07/2025 19:33

Just buy a box of sandwich bags, either ones that press seal or zipper ones, if the airport needs them in bags they must be sealable.
Unless you will literally not use the rest for anything else this seems the best option.
For the poster who said MCR doesn't need them in bags, not sure this is correct (or Liverpool, we flew out of LIV last month)

BruFord · 30/07/2025 19:34

I’m also planning to just take a carry on bag on an upcoming flight and will buy toiletries when I get there. I’ve visited this destination before so I know where the shops are.

You can just use normal freezer bags from a supermarket - much cheaper to buy these if required and fill with normal toiletiries under 100 ml .it’s not the size of the clear plastic bag that matters it’s the contents of it . But depending on the airport you are travelling from , if they have the new scanners you don’t need to empty your bag or use the clear plastic bags anymore .
have a great time !

It actually does matter! I have been hauled up on this before for having a plastic bag that’s “too big”! Or I guess I’ll say it doesn’t matter as long as all your stuff fits into one airport sized bag 🤣 I argued in vain that this was a tax on being female, especially as the bloody bag is mostly taken up with my oestrogel!

RainSoakedNights · 30/07/2025 19:35

Do it click and collect. Normal prices, normal sizes, after security

whatcanthematterbe81 · 30/07/2025 19:35

I always do this, just remember you still have to bring it back. Unless you chuck it but that’s a waste .

ClareBlue · 30/07/2025 19:36

All those saying some airports don't require you to remove and put in a clear bag. This is true but they still have to be under the 100ml in your bag. Shannon was any size with no removal for a a year but EU have said all airports have to keep under 100ml until technology is tested better. Most airports have the bags for you and an area to sort out your liquids pre security.

Yes, best to buy travel sizes if you can.

FreeWifi · 30/07/2025 19:38

Airports give you bags so you don’t need your own.

I don’t buy toiletries at the airport as I have products I need and like that will not be available in boots. So I decant my own into the travel bottles and take them that way.

Wow how lovely would that be to be able to chuck any old size of stuff in your bag and not worry about it! It’s been amazing to me the amount of stress taken out of the whole experience already with the new scanners just not having to remove your laptop etc. and put fluids in a plastic bag. I wouldn’t have thought it would make that much difference but it’s truly been so much less stressful an experience flying recently since this was brought in. Noticeably so. Almost like the days before 9/11!

No3392 · 30/07/2025 19:39

Boots click and collect? I always do it when travelling with no hold.

cwmflahwbml · 30/07/2025 19:39

I don’t know why everyone doesn’t do this. Is there a snag in my plan somewhere?

The snag is the price and to a lesser extent, not being able to get the brands you like at the airport shop.

Just buy 1 litre ziploc bags or buy stuff at your destination which is most likely to be cheaper than at the airport.

Dox9 · 30/07/2025 19:40

A ziplock freezer bag from supermarket is fine. Check the size allowed though. I have seen people with big ziplock bags who were handed correct size bags and told to dispose of everything that doesn't fit.
I always buy suncream in Boots after security when going to sun holidays. Shampoo etc is cheap over there but suncream always seems extortionate.

Fuzzymuddle33 · 30/07/2025 19:40

We always do this with Ryanair. or Boots 3 for 2 minis airside too

Lovetosurf · 30/07/2025 19:43

Go to the Security section on the website of airport you are travelling from to check whether they have installed the new scanners and to read their guidance. Do this for both the UK airport and the airport you'll be returning from.

If they have the new scanners, you will not need to take out liquids and put in a separate clear plastic bag, but as far as I'm aware they will still need to be 100ml max - check on their website!

For short trips I usually travel just with cabin baggage and decant my usual stuff into small bottles.

As others suggest, it's worth buying sunscreen/after-sun after Security as you need more than 100ml and can be more expensive abroad.

Branleuse · 30/07/2025 19:44

They usually have the clear bags at the airport.
It's also probably cheaper to buy shampoo at a supermarket or shop where you are holidaying than at the airport

beetr00 · 30/07/2025 19:44

are you averse to decanting @kleverklogs and using these?

RandomUsernameHere · 30/07/2025 19:44

A lot of airports don’t have the 100ml/plastic bag rule anymore, it depends on whether the scanners have been upgraded yet or not. Check on the airport’s website.

HouseOfGoldandBones · 30/07/2025 19:45

You can order online & collect it at the airport.

SweatyBettyAgain · 30/07/2025 19:45

I do click and collect at the boots in the airport. It's epic. Used to be so handy for picking up the kids nappies and snacks when they were babies. I'd chuck the nappies in the basket of the pram and then when we got to the gate we'd put the pram and nappies in the prams travel bag!

Vintagenow · 30/07/2025 19:46

You don't need to do this at my local airport anymore and can take liquids in bottles upto 2 litres. Previously I would order a click and collect from boots to pick up after security. The prices were the same I think.

We use Shannon every few weeks and it was so liberating when they brought it in. The first airports in EU to use the new scanners.
Parking to the gate usually less than 20 minutes at Shannon. But of course you have to get home and then you are back to 100ml. But taking gifts to UK was easier. Especially local soft goat cheese that is actually a liquid according to security at Poznan airport in Poland😂 was all taken off us but it didn't seem to go in a bin.
