I think the surgeon can switch it around if they want to - I was once slated first on list for an 8 hr operation, and the surgeon came to me and said they'd switched me with the lady who was supposed to be after me as hers was only an hour and it was mad for her to wait all that time. Seemed entirely reasonable to me but whatever person/software had planned it originally obviously thought the opposite!

Agreed. I had surgery years ago and was told I was second, behind a diabetic patient. I ended up being operated on last. I don’t know why they changed it and didn’t ask as I didn’t want to seem difficult and there was likely to be a very good reason.

Ok you’re just being goady now.

fortunately the NHS prioritises those the most clinically urgent, not the most entitled

So the rest of us just get screwed over? Seems fair to leave someone anxious and starving till 6pm

Starving? It’s a day of fasting, it won’t kill you. You wait or you don’t wait. If you leave you leave. They won’t care that you’ve gone. Your attitude is awful tbh! The healthiest should go first? Meh, you’re a knob

mynameiscalypso · 30/07/2025 18:23

But someone always has to be left until last. Why is it more unfair for it to be you vs anyone else?

It’s not fair. Why am I being punished for being healthy?

oh, wait, I’m a nurse!!

Hahahah awwww didums.
What if you’re all “healthy” that day?? I really hope you are last

FreeWifi · 30/07/2025 18:24

You are clearly trolling now. But if this is true, I suggest you leave the attitude and tax-talk at home. It won’t help you get seen sooner on the day!

Houndsahollering · 30/07/2025 18:25

ScuderiaSedici · 30/07/2025 17:43

Because I’ll have been fasting for near on 24 hours at that point and if it’s got to 2pm and I’ve not been operated on, it’s quite clear u won’t be operated on that day!

That’s utter tosh. And you’ll survive 24 hours Nil by mouth ffs. If you’re going to piss around and waste everyone’s time at least let them know now you won’t be attending so they have a chance to call in someone who’ll take a cancellation slot.

I’m not trolling. I’m anxious, stressed, and pissed off.

There is no reason for you to be the first in line. You don't get to choose, its best you accept that because you're working yourself up for nothing.

Treat us with respect then? There’s no reason I couldn’t have a call this afternoon to say im X position, start fasting at X time and come into the hospital at X tome.

If you genuinely think making people sit until evening without eating is humane or okay, then that’s on you.

My son at 9 years old had to fast 2 days before the surgery and 2 days after the surgery too as it was bowel surgery and he'd already had several previous bowel surgeries. If he can fast for that long, an adult can fast up until evening if necessary, I wish that is all my son had to fast for.

Unfortunately someone always has to be last on the list and they aren't going to be any less hungry or fed up as you are. It's just how it is when you need surgery and there's a list.

I was in for a gynaecology procedure earlier this year … fairly simple. I was told they do the more difficult cases first, so I was last down… just sat on the bed reading, and listening to music.

He certainly has a better attitude than you do. He struggled, of course he did, who likes to be starving hungry? but he didn't make half as much of a fuss as you seem to be making.

Rooroobear · 30/07/2025 18:30

You sound lovely op. Now you’re being rude about a child. Keep going, you’ll get loads of help!

titchy · 30/07/2025 18:31

ScuderiaSedici · 30/07/2025 17:54

I pay enough in tax and I’ve waited long enough to not be left fasting until 5 or 6pm the next day.

Yeah sod clinical need. Let’s ask everyone to bring in their latest P60 and prioritise according to tax paid. Don’t be a fucking entitled moron.

Too late!! They already are

Cantonet · 30/07/2025 18:33

My ds waited 2 days with an infection.
We were told at 6pm that they would not be able to do that first day due to too many emergencies coming in. So we went home & returned the following morning at 8am. He was operated on at 6ish the second day.
There were patients holding their own drips in the waiting room & some very sick looking individuals.
It was no ones fault & the surgical team were organised, cheerful & down to reception they were all absolutely lovely.
But I really don't think either of us could have faced a third day of waiting.

isitme111 · 30/07/2025 18:35

Who do you think should wait till 6pm, why shouldn't it be you? What makes you more worthy than others. What's the issue with not eating later the previous evening if you're worried about starving. You need to be a bit more flexible.

The list will not be finalised until the day...not in advance. There are so many variables- including people who weren't operated on the day before for whatever reason, thatday surgery lists aren't certain in advance.
Suck it up or go private.

How utterly despicable of you to be so dismissive of a child's experiences.

I was going to jump in and ask a question but I’m almost afraid to ask now.
