oh op
dont get so wound up,
you have no idea when you will have the procedure.

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/07/2025 19:01

If they are running a morning and an afternoon list and the morning one over runs by a lot for some reason, do they cancel the last morning patients or do they put the morning ones into the afternoon and cancel the afternoon ones before they arrive?

taxidriver · 30/07/2025 19:02

take a book

As I’ve been told multiple times, I’ll be last. You have no idea how anxiety provoking it is, and clearly neither do the doctors or nurses on this thread! How reassuring for me, knowing I’ll be belittled.

So to make us as safe as possible, they make us all starve ourselves!

You can't eat for safety reasons. They don't say not to eat for fun.

Vaxtable · 30/07/2025 19:04

@ScuderiaSedici

I have just read all your posts. Ok you are possibly worried about the procedure but my h
god what a nasty attitude you have in my opinion

people have suggested a number of things to help and you are snapping back

Just eat a bit later than you would normally if you don’t want to eat something extra before the fasting starts

just accept that it’s out of your hands where you are in the list, lots of things can happen in the day to change the position. That’s why they don’t tell you beforehand where you are

if you are in morning clinics it’s highly unlikely you will be sitting there at 5pm not gone in

sitting there at 2pm may be hard for you but just do it it’s not going to kill you to not eat for that long unless you have diabetes or something which they will have taken into account

as to walking out if they have not done the operation as soon as you liked well go ahead then you go to the bottom of the list and will continue to be in pain and if your attitude is the same next time the same thing will happen and it will take years to get sorted

instead of being so stroppy about it take a book to read and sit and wait and get the op done now

SoScarletItWas · 30/07/2025 19:04

ScuderiaSedici · 30/07/2025 17:54

I pay enough in tax and I’ve waited long enough to not be left fasting until 5 or 6pm the next day.

If you take that attitude in, you’re going to have a very stressful and annoying time.

Yes, you’ll sit around and wait.
Yes, you might be given a time then bumped later.
Yes, they might cancel it completely late on.

Last op I had, they told me at 9pm it wasn’t being done. They’d kept me in two nights already and nil by mouth both days, telling me I’d be done. Fed me bits of yogurt and toast late both nights.

Having told me it wasn’t happening, they woke me at midnight and took me down for the op!

There had been emergency admissions that took priority.

Hospitals run to their time, not yours.

you have been told by randoms on the internet, not by the actual hospital
dont stress about it

Why do you keep saying you'll be there until 6pm when you're on a morning list? Yes, lists sometimes run over but not to that extent, if there was that big an issue you'd be more likely to be cancelled than delayed by that long. Your surgeon will likely have other commitments scheduled for the afternoon and the theatre will have an afternoon list planned.

It’s possible, but I couldn’t comment on how likely. I wasn’t operated on until late afternoon despite being a ‘morning’ case and getting there first thing (as instructed).

I think after waiting near on two years to get the op, im allowed to be pissed off that they’re going to have me sitting till 6pm.

I went first for a really complicated gynae surgery case, my 4 year old went first for tooth extraction under GA as he is ND and they felt he couldn’t wait, they actually bumped him up after meeting him on the day

But it will be getting done. You can wait just a bit longer if you have to and then it will be over with.

Sparklebelle1024 · 30/07/2025 19:10

I tend to be first due to being anaphylactic to latex and it’s the only way they can guarantee a latex free environment despite most departments being latex free there’s always a chance there’s a latex product used in someone’s op

ScuderiaSedici · 30/07/2025 18:53

As I’ve been told multiple times, I’ll be last on the list. That’ll be a 6-7pm theatre slot.

You haven’t been told you’ll be last on the list. You’ve been told there are a number of complex factors determining list order, and you could be anyway from first to last, depending on who your fellow patients are.

ToInfiniteaAndBeyond · 30/07/2025 19:12

You’ve said repeatedly that you don’t care if they take you off the list entirely (if you walk at 2pm as you say you will).

Do you want this surgery, or don’t you? Make your mind up.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 30/07/2025 19:12

Again, you're saying that like it's a fact when it really isn't. You will be placed on the list in the position which is most suitable for you given the relative risk factors of the list as a whole. The team will be aiming to complete the list by lunchtime. Yes, this may not happen, but that will most likely be the plan.

FortheloveofCheesus · 30/07/2025 19:13

We were told youngest first for paediatric as they've been fasted overnight and the youngest cope least well with not being allowed to eat or drink.

With a scheduled c section we were told it was done based on complexity/urgency.

Blushingm · 30/07/2025 19:13

Annoyeddd · 30/07/2025 15:28

Children tend to be youngest first on the list.

For adults transport patients get priority

ive never known those on hospital transport to be given priority

1AnotherOne · 30/07/2025 19:15

Read the news if you’re worried about starving - you’ll see what it truly is.

simple cases on fit and healthy patients are nearly always done last. Why should someone with ill health have to ‘wait around all day’ as you put it?

youalright · 30/07/2025 19:15

ScuderiaSedici · 30/07/2025 19:06

If its day surgery it wont be 6pm as they will want to go home. Iv had day surgery across multiple trusts and their usually going home about 5/6 pm and you need a few hours to recover from GA. I'd honestly just be greatful if its not cancelled no matter what time of day you have it. Fasting is way more annoying then. As you have to do it all over again.

FortheloveofCheesus · 30/07/2025 19:16

My underweight (medical reasons) 5 year old had to wait ages (fasted) for a hernia op as she was the oldest there. Didn't go in til after lunch and hadn't been allowed to eat since the evening before. If she can manage you probably can op.

youalright · 30/07/2025 19:17

Its unlikely to be children first in op case as she wont be having a paediatric surgeon. They will be in a completely seperate part of the hospital and surgical suite as the equipment used for children is completely different and so are the drs

You’ve been waiting for 2 years for surgery …

and u are moaning about what time you are going into surgery ????

OMG !!!!

you are totally stressing yourself out about what the time will be, if you are going to be starving to death, feeling anxiety …

so what ??
everybody is in the same boat !!
like you said - it’s surgery, not a fucking party, so treat it with the seriousness it deserves,

turn up and wait your turn -
as a young person would say : you are not the main character here !!!

they are trying to get as much done as efficiently as possible within clinical parameters, none of which you seem to have any insight about,

dig deep and prepare yourself for a day at the hospital, you have waited 2 years !!

you never know, you might get bumped for a more priority case on the day !!

so be grateful it goes ahead at all, never mind some anxiety- normal - and a hungry belly which ain’t gonna kill you !!!

milkandhoney2 · 30/07/2025 19:20

ScuderiaSedici · 30/07/2025 18:06

If you genuinely think making people sit until evening without eating is humane or okay, then that’s on you.

Sometimes you have to do it - my last one I had to do bowel prep so stopped eating Wed am, surgery Thursday and I didn’t eat until Thursday 8pm

Blushingm · 30/07/2025 19:20

ScuderiaSedici · 30/07/2025 17:43

Because I’ll have been fasting for near on 24 hours at that point and if it’s got to 2pm and I’ve not been operated on, it’s quite clear u won’t be operated on that day!

It’s not quite clear at all!

and you won’t die if you don’t eat

if you walk at 2pm because you’re sulking not only will you have wasted your time, you’ll have wasted the hospital’s time (and precious resources) but you’ve also taken a space that someone else could have taken.

you really are quite unreasonable
