Do you want a receipt

Bunnybenty · 30/07/2025 13:45

I moved to England not that long ago.

In other countries that I lived in, they just gave me a receipt in the shops, everytime that I bought something. The receipt was always handed to me with the purchase.

Why in the UK do they not just give the receipt to you,

instead they always ASK you if you want a receipt.

What annoys me about it, is that it slows the shopping experience down so much.

Many times I have been called back to the till, to be asked if i want a receipt.

Example: I was in a small shop this morning. I only had a certain amount of time, as i was on the way to work. I was walking out of the door, when the woman at the till shouted at me "Wait. Come back! come back!".

I thought maybe my payment hadn't gone through, so I walked all the way back to her.

She said "Do you want a receipt?".

It drives me mad!

In my office, we have a computer which issues receipts and a card machine. To save waste we always ask if the person would like a receipt as they are not automatically issued. I have not had one person stating they find me annoying for asking, most say don't bother i don't want one. Maybe something else will come along that will annoy you more.

maryhinge88 · 31/07/2025 10:46

If you want a laugh to cheer yourself up OP, get a receipt from the self checkout in sainsburys. It looks like it’s being ejaculated out 😂.

I live in Australia and can report that in small shops for small purchases, it is absolutely standard to be asked if you want the receipt.

Everyone is accustomed to it and hardly anyone goes batshit about it.

It can't be that much paper waste. If loads of other countries give a receipt every time.

It is only the UK that I have experienced this in.

It’s a huge paper waste, not just paper but all the wood, water & resources used to make the till rolls to begin with. Surely you can imagine every single shop in the UK giving a receipt to every single sale in the UK, it’s millions upon millions every week

Ihopeithinkiknow · 31/07/2025 10:52

Don’t know about anyone else but I always make sure my payment has gone through before leaving the till area, the OP said maybe she was called back because the payment hadn’t gone through which means this has happened to her before so it does sound like she taps her card and walks off rather quickly.

Legally they have to give you a receipt and they know that - but they also know that there are plenty of people like me who LOATHE receipts and see them as wasteful - when I am given one I normally shoot the cashier a dirty look and try to offer it back (for their bin) or are forced to spend my valuable time scouting around for a bin to put it in. I’m talking about Tesco type receipts here by the way, not for an expensive item you may need to return. I therefore thoroughly value being asked first. I don’t want to have to find a bin, I don’t want to have to stuff it in my pocket and forget about it only to discover it plastered over everything in the washing machine, I equally don’t want a purse filled to overflowing with them. I love the question so I guess it’s for people like me.

Legally they have to give you a receipt”. Not so. Under what Act do they legally have to give a receipt? There is no legal requirement in the UK to give a receipt.

Actually come to think of it Tesco do give one automatically. But that is rare now in my experience. The smaller supermarkets I frequent such as Centra always ask. It wasn’t a thing a few years ago you got one everywhere without them asking.

I always get asked in my local Tesco when I buy at a (wo)manned till.

I think because it saves paper if you don't want one. I can't stand the " can I have your email address" I say no now.

Tbf I worked at cex and we all hated having to ask but we got punished if there was low e receipts. It affected the store/staff. So stupid.

Yes I can see why; it is the staff that face the bad tempered response when you ask for someone's email address.

In any event if taking someone's personal data shouldn't they be informed of what it will be used for, how to withdraw etc at that moment?

I don't thnk it happens in ireland

Because i visited my friend in Ireland recently.

I went into a tesco in Ireland, I bought items at the till, I was handed a receipt automatically

If i Go into tesco in england, i am asked if i want a receipt .

On that trip in Ireland, I also went into a Centra (small supermarket) and i was handed a receipt with the purchase.

I also went into a clothes store in Ireland and i was handed the receipt with the purchase. They didnt ask me if i wanted it.

I was in Ireland 2 weeks ago. At least two of the shops I went to said "do you want your receipt" and I said "no, that's fine thanks" Zero time wasted.

AutumnLover1989 · 31/07/2025 11:49

I'm glad they check. Pointless to just dish out a receipt for a tin of beans and a pint of milk. Clothing and electrical items? Definitely.

This thread has been informative for some pp's who didn't realise taking unnecessary receipts was wasting paper.
No idea how this wasn't obvious, everyday is a school day.

The number of businesses on line who offer a percentage discount if you sign up to their emails, demonstrates the value of your email address to them. They are in effect buying your email address. It also is a data privacy and hacking risk.

l have a separate email address for receipts of items under guarantee.

I think most people would realise that unnecessary receipts = waste paper. However, I don't think many realised just how much wasted paper that amounted to. Someone gave the tonnage earlier on - I can't remember the amount but it was a lot!

It might not be much per receipt, but add up the millions that are printed every day and it becomes a lot.

I'm in Ireland, we do this too. And maybe the other countries you've been to should be doing it.

They do it in New Zealand too. Doesn't take much time at all.

Miyagi99 · 31/07/2025 12:49

To save on paper. I rarely get a receipt unless it’s clothing or something else I may need to return. A lot of receipts you can’t recycle due to the ink (maybe all of them?).

MissSookieStackhouse · 31/07/2025 12:50

I agree with you OP. If you don’t have a receipt, how can you prove you bought it if you need to take something back? Or check the receipt in case there’s a mistake? Quite often the special offers and discounts don’t register on supermarket tills and a quick visit to the customer service desk sorts it out immediately. How can you check stuff like that without a receipt? You can’t, so until shops allow returns without a receipt I’m going to continue to get one every time.

Its an awful lot of paper waste, I think other countries should do this to personally.

SixteenClovesOfGarlic · 30/07/2025 14:01

My answer is always no, so I prefer to be asked, instead of having to bin it myself.

Exactly this.

Unless I’m buying something I may need to return like clothes I don’t give a sh*t about a receipt and it’s just going to go straight in the bin. I definitely prefer to be asked.
