This is in a very naice area!! Literally this fella doing his shopping smoking a bloody joint, stinking the store out!! Skeleton staff.

i really wanted to say something but had the feeling he’d tell me to fuck off.

Does this happen in other areas?! Or this a first (am I being naive here?!).

I’ve seen plenty of grab and run shop lifters who literally take the train in - shop lift- then run back on to a train - it’s very close!

why should it be normalised?

It's normalised in Greece now. You can buy it in the cigarette shop.

3000 years of civilisation that country. 😍

I believe it’s also legalised in Thailand but moves are now underway to change that due to the negative aspects of what legalising it has brought with it.

goldfishbowl2025 · 29/07/2025 22:59

Well cos he looked suspiciously calm, I’m not fussed about people smoking joints! I used to live in NYC, but one of reasons I moved is I hate the smell of weed! So I was pretty shocked to see a fairly middle class looking male in a naice area smoking a joint, he looked sinister as he looked a bit dangerous!

it is not everyday normal @Needmorelego
fo be walking around a supermarket smoking a joint in England!!

But when you lived in NY it was illegal. In another thread you said you’ve lived in your current home for 16 years. NY only legalized marijuana 4 years ago.

So if you drive anyone anywhere can do anything??

Bizarre take

BCBird · 30/07/2025 04:58

Im.in Midlands. Not a particularly nice area, go to Sainsbury's occasionally. I.have never seen this and frankly would have been.shocked. I think someone on minimum.wage might be reluctant to say anything- they are not being paid danger money. It could be tackled as no smoking allowed i suppose. Wrong behaviour though. Years ago it was most unusual to smell weed. It seems to be the 'norm' now.

CommissarySushi · 30/07/2025 05:30

God, I hate people who smoke weed. They're all thick as fuck.

HelpMeGetThrough · 30/07/2025 05:38

People have to do something to cope with supermarket prices these days,

Give it time, people will be shooting up before going to the checkout.

Erm actually no I do not Capiche 🤣

That’s because you’re not in the mob and don’t carry your machine gun in a violin case

Each to their own, and I see why you didn’t, but I personally would have said something.

My dad said something to a dickhead on an electric scooter that nearly hit my mum and their dog and he stopped and told him, all in his face, if he wasnt so old he'd have shanked him. So yeah, I understand why op didnt say anything. People can be scum

rwalker · 30/07/2025 06:23

goldfishbowl2025 · 29/07/2025 22:45

@SummerEvei was genuinely surprised, my mum was really shocked as she’s up until recently worked in retail. We just walked away from him, I mean I dunno I feel like I should have said something. But what if he had a weapon? I’ve got kids.

Which is why the minimum wage staff probably turned a blind eye I would

applegingermint · 30/07/2025 06:26

Poor Sainsbury staff. No one should be expected to encounter cigarette smoke in their workplace. It’s one thing for customers who can leave the store but that’s not exactly an option if you’re on shift.

Radioundermypillow · 30/07/2025 06:27

I am used to people smoking weed outside but not in shops. I would hate it just as much as I would hate someone smoking a fag in a supermarket.

Weed stinks and I work with plenty of people who are absolutely crippled by their weed use. It's sad.

zaazaazoom · 30/07/2025 06:27

HeyThereDelila · 29/07/2025 23:00

Appalling. Please complain to the shop and ask them to check CCTV.

Our country has gone to hell.

I hate the fake nostalgia of these sorts of comments. People used to smoke absolutely everywhere. On planes, buses, shops, offices and I remember clearly people smoking joints in the cinema in the 80s.

It hasn't gone to hell, it's always been there.

I am old and I do not remember people ever being allowed to smoke in supermarkets. Or maybe they were technically allowed but just didn't because they weren't spoilt brats.

4 in 10 Greek adults smoke tobacco. It’s not something to be proud of, civilised or not.

solando · 30/07/2025 06:33

Well, it's the same as smoking a cigarette in the shop, I used to smoke back in the 70s and 80s but don't recall smoking in the supermarket.

Me too. I'm sure there was something about not smoking in food shops. I worked in loads of supermarkets and dept stores in the 80s and noone smoked in them, just lit up the minute they got outside, me included.

Tiredjusttired · 30/07/2025 06:38

Joint smoking in public is fairly common. My son sees people openly using crack pipes on london underground now.

Could be meth though.

Smoking weed - unremarkable.
Smoking weed in Waitrose - remarkable.

I’d have the same reaction for someone smoking a cig. WTF are you doing, this is not the place for that.

And yes, someone breaking the normal code of conduct that we all live by (don’t light up in supermarkets) is not likely to respond well to being told to put it out. Because breaking that code in the first place requires a lack of self control and complete egoism.

Radioundermypillow · 30/07/2025 06:48

Actually come to think of it i have seen people vape in food shops. Also disgusting IMO because of the smell and theres something a bit performative about it, but I guess this is where we are headed.

Edited

I don't remember supermarkets I do remember shops.
I thought it was disgusting then as well.

I just hate the old "the world's gone to pot. It was so much better in my day" When it actually wasn't that much better. People smoked everywhere. Dope not as much TBF but still it was just normal.

Empress13 · 30/07/2025 06:59

Not OK but it’s done now. What do you expect to gain from telling the store now they probably won’t see him again

Yes they did, but it was legal to do so. Once it was made illegal, the vast majority stopped smoking indoors as they knew they'd be challenged. I guess the difference is that nowadays people dont give a shit if something is illegal or antisocial, they just do it anyway. That HAS changed.

You can’t smell how strong it is cos you’re used to it

This. It smells vile. My neighbour regularly smokes a joint with the back door open. It even woke me up one morning the smell was so strong and revolting. I regularly have to shut my windows and doors in the summer.

Why should I have to? I would love to report them as it is actually illegal even in your own home but I don't want to make an enemy. Thankfully house is up for sale. Hoping for non weed smoking neighbours.

zaazaazoom · 30/07/2025 07:10

I guess it depends on how you remember it. I remember the 70s and seeing people sniffing glue in the city centre, people spitting, racist graffiti, fighting after the football matches on a Saturday, my mum thinking Punks were the downfall of civilisation, people smacking their kids openly, the ice cream van selling single fags to 11 year olds.
It's very rare to see anyone openly defy the smoking ban, let alone have a spliff. I have never seen it and not have most people on thsi thread so it's hardly a case of people not giving a shit.
When was the last time you saw some one. Openly defying the ban even inside pubs? Very voccasionally in a concert I will see it but rarely. Even in festivals 99% of people won't smoke in a tent. I don't think people have changed that much.

xanthomelana · 30/07/2025 07:13

So if he was in a rough area it would be acceptable but because it’s a ‘naice’ area it’s outrageous and he could be carrying a weapon?

Sidenote: welcome to retail, this is why we are miserable because we’ve regularly got to put up with this type of behaviour.
