This is in a very naice area!! Literally this fella doing his shopping smoking a bloody joint, stinking the store out!! Skeleton staff.

i really wanted to say something but had the feeling he’d tell me to fuck off.

Does this happen in other areas?! Or this a first (am I being naive here?!).

I’ve seen plenty of grab and run shop lifters who literally take the train in - shop lift- then run back on to a train - it’s very close!

Omg! I too saw some people walking around smoking spliff the other day. You can usually smell it in town. Or see someone in the park. But not just walking around the high street.

And then on way home I saw 3/4 of a full joint just discarded on the floor. And that’s the point when I really thought the society of today has truly lost it 🤣 We would never just leave a joint behind like that in my day.

Like I said Indoors.

It's a good shoplifting distraction technique. Maybe it was that?

1 of you does something outrageous to gain all attention, while 1 of you robs the place blind. We'd do things like that in my youth (I know. Bad upbringing. My life has been very different as an adult). I did also have a friend who'd casually smoke weed no matter where he was though, so perhaps he grew up and moved near you...

It’s a sad state of affairs if people think it’s ok for someone to walk around a supermarket (there were some youngish teens there too that could be influenced) with a joint smoking. @HeyThereDelilaof course he could have had a weapon, he looked the calm angry type plus well a dickhead too.

So he was normal but sinister looking, calm but angry and a dickhead. Blimey OP you managed to work all this out just from looking at him?! Impressive 😀

He was heading to the till to pay … just bizarre. Even in NYC you can’t smoke cannabis indoors!!

And some teenagers might be influenced and take up weed smoking cos some guy was puffing on a joint, while they were buying milk for their mum.

Well yes that is more shocking. But I was pretty shocked with the high street too.

Law and order is dead ☠️

Weepixie · 29/07/2025 23:17

Op, the smell of weed makes me feel so sick I’d have had to leave the store. In fact there are a couple of streets in a small town in Wales I visit often, as well as a certain few streets in Zurich, that I just can’t walk through anymore such is the strong smell of weed. It’s vile.

I’m bizarrely very intuitive… normal looking people can look sinister - there are people who have a calm look to their face but inside you can see they are angry

I smoke a joint in my home. No problem. Never heard a word from the neighbours about it.

Open the door to outside.

Some Mumsnetters are utterly clutching their pearls suggesting the smell goes through their walls. LOL. must be crap house builds then

DyslexicPoster · 29/07/2025 23:18

I'm surprised that reply aren't the standard keep your beak out. I think personally it's skanky behaviour. We have local kids foing run and grab of cans of beer in our extremely posh Sains.

But out of town over the county boarder in Lidl you get high on weed just coming off the fumes of the clothes of some people.

I even smelt weed well inside the grounds of a private school during the day recently. Must have been a member of staff because of where it was during lesson time. Soon people will be puffing on weed at toddler groups because it's everywhere. Some people must be stoned all waking hours of the day.

Why should the be exposed to it and why should it be normalised?

You can’t smell how strong it is cos you’re used to it

As soon as I see “naice” in an initial post I know I’ve reached peak Mumsnet.

I thought having an amount of weed for "personal use" wasn't illegal anymore (i may be completely wrong).
Unfortunately it's completely legal to smoke regular cigarettes and vapes outside in most public spaces and that's just as gross.
Gross - but (as far as I know) not breaking any laws if it's one joint.

Oh really! Well that explains it then.

suburberphobe · 29/07/2025 23:24

why should it be normalised?

It's normalised in Greece now. You can buy it in the cigarette shop.

3000 years of civilisation that country. 😍

The problem is several years ago it was made illegal to smoke (normal cigarettes) in "public".
Except it wasn't. Privately owned pubs and restaurants it's illegal but standing at the bus stop it's not.
The law is the wrong away around.
Smoking should be only allowed in a persons home or designated pubs/restaurants that people can choose whether or not to go in.
Outside....in the actual street, parks, bus stops etc.....that's where it should be illegal.
Until that happens - children are always going to see adults smoking.
🙁

It shouldn't be normalised, well not walking round a supermarket anyway.

But you didn't bother having a quick word with the staff, so 🤷‍♀️

That's the thing about internet forums. So many people have a lot to say after the event, yet they can't be arsed to do anything at the time.

A private, discreet word with a member of staff would've been more effective and it wouldn't matter whether you had kids with you, because he wouldn't know.

Just no, don’t be so ridiculous, how is driving a car the same as, smoking cannabis in a food store.
Doesn’t take much to work out, that you smoke and couldn’t give a shit about anyone else.Do you walk everywhere?

RosyappleA · 29/07/2025 23:33

I think it just goes to show people are less likely to follow the law these days and less likely to respect others too. They are less bothered with being law abiding citizens because they know there will be no consequences unfortunately. The police (the few police left) don’t have time for this and they know it.

Seasonofthesticks · 29/07/2025 23:47

Im agreeable to the occasional joint but in a supermarket no. Sainsbury’s has open deli and fish counters too

SchoolMum22 · 29/07/2025 23:49

Don't get that in Aldi either!! Must tell my partner !! 😝

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/07/2025 23:49

It’s everywhere, unfortunately.

NewbieYou · 30/07/2025 00:32

I wouldn’t care if I saw it outside tbh but in a shop is crazy.

You probably have neighbours who aren’t bothered by the smell of your joint, or they tolerate the smell because they feel they have to. And yes, the smell of a joint can filter to the house next door just the same way the smell of cooking can. It can even escape out on to the pavement if the smell coming from the house next to our village post office is anything to go by. And no crap builds involved - just ordinary stone built terraced houses from the days when things were built to last.
