To think the RNLI are 100% in the right

I've just seen this story on the BBC news homepage where the RNLI are being accused of acting as a taxi service for migrants trying to enter the UK on small boats from Europe.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8dejyg4l37o

The organisation and volunteers quite rightly have responded to say they make no apologies for saving lives at sea and that their work has no political motivation.

Damn straight - one of the volunteers further down the article explains the profound impact he feels of encountering people struggling in our waters.

It makes me wonder what critics of the service expect them to do - just sail away, leaving the people to die? Pick them up and cross the channel to dump them back 'where they came from'?

What is wrong with them? Where is their compassion? Regardless of your thoughts on immigration, this is so cold and inhuman....

Why would they be leaving rubbish everywhere? Don't they have access to bins? Oh yeah, in most asylum "hotels" they dont. All they have is a small bin in a room that was designed to be serviced daily and not at all suitable for day to day living.

What sort of damage is your neighbour's boyfriend's cousin's sister reporting @ByNeatPinkHare?

Your perception of asylum seekers being showered with freebies is false. They get housed in pretty awful conditions, can't choose where they live, and will get the princely sum of £49.18 per week for food, clothes and toiletries. If your accommodation provides meals, that goes down to £9.95. No phones.

Really we should let asylum seekers work, it would make much more sense, and would be massively helpful in areas where we are chronically short of workers such as the hospitality and care sectors.

Ummmm, in most instances they ARE working. Your deliveroo takeaway? Your car washed? Did you not know?

Maybe, as a thank you, they can spend some of their weekly pocket money from the taxpayer on some bin bags and clean it up themselves?

ExtraOnions · 29/07/2025 19:42

The language used towards asylum seekers is disgustingly, the attempt to dehumanise and “other” then, is reminiscent of some of the most horrible regimes of the 20th Century.

The fact that Politicians are happy to use this langague, and citizens are happy to scrawl it across banners and stand in front of buildings, show an acceptance of behaviour that 10 years ago would have been shocking.

GrouachMacbeth · 29/07/2025 19:45

If you wish to support your local RNLI station, or a unit away from the English Channel, you can make a donation to that station. You can ask that it goes to say a radio, or for fuel or use as you think best at Seagull Bay station.

If of course you want to direct your donations to helping the units who are rescuing asylum seekers amongst others you can direct it these places specifically.

It should be. It's costing us over £7m per day to accommodate people who most likely are not entitled to refugee status, and are simply chancing their arm.

It’s not the point to the legality though. And the majority are entitles anyway. It’s costing so much because, as with pretty much everything else, the Tories fucked it up.

No, I was told that I had to volunteer with asylum seekers.

No you weren’t. You were told t9 look beyond your own self interest.

This place is like the "This Is Fine" meme come to life. A containment board for people who fundamentally can't and don't want to confront reality.

The reality is that the UK is going bankrupt. Debt has surpassed 100% of GDP. We import 50% of our food. We have one of the largest trade deficits in the world. We have the most expensive energy in the world. We'll soon be spending more on debt interest payments than the NHS and armed forces.

Before someone says "But US debt" - totally different. They have the world's reserve currency, energy independence, a far more diverse economy, and the world's largest companies.

That's before you get to our grave social problems, such as the breakdown of law and order and the social contract; the growth of sectarian politics; alternative religious legal systems and courts springing up and the police ceding control to 'community leaders'.

We're in an absolute hole, but these people prefer sanctimony to a functioning economy and society.

No country on earth would look at present day UK and seek to emulate it, on basically anything.

What's al that got to do with allowing people to drown in the channel?

Have you ever been to one that's been turned over to them? I have a family members who works in health care and has; she said the state of it was appalling. They have no appreciation at all.

As I've said previously I volunteer with refugee charities and yes, I've seen hotels that have been 'turned over to them' (interesting choice of words by the way). Yes, they're appalling. Yes, they're often infested with vermin. The Lls refuse to do essential repairs. The ceilings are leaking, there is often no hot water, they're overcrowded. None of which is the fault of the people staying there.

cobrakaieaglefang · 29/07/2025 20:05

The RNLI were fundraising in a local town centre quite recently. A young woman was manning the stall. A middle aged man started berating her about 'having a nerve, begging for money, when they are facilitating the invasion' .
The girl looked quite shocked at his stance. I waited for him to go and went and checked she was OK. She said it wasn't the first comment that day.
As someone who has sailed yachts I'm appreciative of their aims.
Unfortunately, weak politicians, unable to get to grips are causing RNLI problems as well as handing Farage and co perfect PR to gain support. Our MN bubble isn't replicated in RL. A lot of people are beginning to get bold in their views.

shellinmypocket · 29/07/2025 20:14

The RNLI are absolute heroes. They are not political. They are there to protect all human life.

Everything. We can't afford to have unlimited, neverending liabilities. Even IF these people ever end up getting jobs, they're almost never (98%+) net contributors and never will be. They're net drains.

The UK can't afford to act as an international charity. Nor is the global jamboree of our benefits system sustainable anymore. Silly season is over for the UK. You can ignore reality but not the consequences of ignoring reality, and that is very much coming for Britain.

No, most aren’t given refugee status; it’s around 44%, and dropping due to more stringent checks on those claiming asylum. Some are offered other humanitarian protection, but they are not actually refugees, technically. The rest are generally refused but stay here anyway, and we pay for them one way or another.

I suspect it's more, since some are proven to have used public money to gamble. Either way, all meals, board and excursions paid for. They can pool their £9 and get some bin bags.

So something else Labour are doing to deal with the crisis then? It’s been the 80%s for a long time.

LakieLady · 29/07/2025 20:45

Zebedee999 · 29/07/2025 10:55

Not if they enter the country illegally... they are criminals. No countries allows people to enter their country illegally, it is why they have laws around it and why those breaking those laws are criminals. Honestly this is why the country is in a mess, we are allowing people in who then justify those entering illegally... absolutely zero respect for the rule of law.
It's too late to maintain standards in this country, it is a free for all.

It is not illegal to enter the UK to claim asylum.

If I had £1 for every time this error has been pointed out on here, it'd be shedloads...

... and I'd donate it all to the RNLI so that they can continue to help people who are desperate enough to undertake such a hazardous journey.

They're never going to stop this until they remove the pull factors.

That would mean introducing long-overdue draconian policies: any illegal arrival deported to a third country immediately with a guarantee that they'll never be permitted asylum in the UK; all foreign nationals to pay at point of US for NHS access; similar rights (or lack of) to places like the UAE and Saudi Arabia in terms of citizenship and residency - essentially impossible if you're not born here etc etc. They need to make the UK an undesirable and unwelcoming place to move to.

It’s not 44% with appeals and much of it is to do with the 2022 Act

I don't particularly care. Overseas territory, anywhere that'll agree to it. Makes no odds. Just get them a long way from here with the guarantee that they'll never be allowed in.
