When I had my last Mirena IUD fitted, in my early 50s, my doctor told me that if it caused me to stop bleeding entirely they would test my blood every year to see the hormone levels to know if I'd gone through menopause. Does yours not do that? As it happens, I do still spot regularly so no blood tests required!

Tbh I’ve not seen a GP for around 5 years, so I’m unsure if ours would offer this. I should really go to see about the coil being removed but I’m slightly worried about it. I’ve gone over the time when it should have been removed.

CharlotteBakewell · 28/07/2025 16:15

I do have huge brain fog though so would be interested to know.

No but those who do sail through it should have bone density checks done.

Oh my mum's bone density would be shocking. She's never so much as walked to the corner shop. And now she's in her 70s, she's got no physical resilience.

I've always been very active, unlike her, but started doing serious strength training at 40 to make sure I go into the menopause and old age strong.

Cantbebotheredwithausername · 28/07/2025 16:17

The definition of menopause is having no period for 12 months. Som you've made it past menopause by a few years (and definitely not perimenopausal any longer) without any symptoms other than missing your period. Congratulations. Menopause is not necessarily awful for all women, some barely feel it at all. You just got lucky.

I'm not in the UK. I see a gynecologist annually for a check up, as is recommended where I live, so it would have been part of this visit (if it wasn't obvious that I wasn't menopausal yet!).
You definitely should be engaging with your health care providers more regularly than that! What is it that you are worried about exactly?
(Also curious why you are calling it a "coil"? It's an IUD.)

JenniferBooth · 28/07/2025 16:31

Im 52 I went on the mini pill in October 2021 Waited for my period so i could start it but period never came so started it anyway. Apart from a bleed while i was on HRT for three months last year, .................nothing.
Partner is almost 69. and orgasms but doesnt ejaculate. He has type 2 diabetes He was told by a doctor years ago that he "fires blanks" but doctors have been wrong about this sort of thing. Can i canvass MN opinion here. Is it safe for me to stop the mini pill?

IUD and coil is the same thing.

I had a surgical menopause and no symptoms. I did have a bone density check done a few years later (came out as osteopenia). I take calcium tablets.

godmum56 · 28/07/2025 16:41

I have zero idea when I had my last period.....I mean I must have known-ish at the time and I can check on my NHS record for the dates when I tried HRT.

KPPlumbing · 28/07/2025 13:37

How did you not realise before now?!

My mum said she breezed through the menopause with no symptoms, and didn't even notice it was happening, so it's not always the doom and gloom we see in the media these days.

Me too! I had absolutely terrible periods - had to set an alarm in the middle of the night on my heaviest days to change my sanitary protection. In my 20s, my cycle was around 21 days and by my early 40s, I had gone down to a 14 day cycle. Got the Mirena coil inserted at about age 42 and then had virtually no periods at all. Hooray! And even when I did have one, it was manageable. One day in my 50s, I realised I hadn’t had a period for a couple of years. I was post menopausal and the blood tests I had indicated that too.

junkmaail · 28/07/2025 16:47

Congrats OP! I’d love to go 4 years with no periods and not realise ! Mine are like a tsunami!

WimbyAce · 28/07/2025 16:55

My last one was 2019 before I got pregnant with my youngest. Have since been on the pill and no periods. Not sure what age I can take it to though.

The coil is an IUD device, coil is what I (and many others) tend to call it in the UK.

There is no guidance for women my age (in my experience and in my home town) to regularly visit the GP every 12 months, especially if you don’t have any problematic symptoms. In my experience, you’re just left to ‘get on with it’!

I have never heard a hormonal IUD being referred to as a coil. Perhaps it's a UK thing.

Stems from the device name Mirena Coil, known as ‘the coil’.

Interesting. In the US (where I am) it's call the Mirena IUD. I always thought a coil was a more old fashioned type of IUD, made from copper and shaped like a coil.

We are encouraged to visit our primary provider (our GP) annually for a well visit, as well as a separate annual visit to the gyno for smears (when needed), internal exams, breast exams, and anything related to contraception or menopause.

That's the copper coil!

Just different nomenclature in our two countries I guess!

LoserWinner · 28/07/2025 17:38

I had a similar experience to you. No peri symptoms at all, missed a period so did a pregnancy test (negative), and haven’t had a period or any symptoms since. I was 55.

mamagogo1 · 28/07/2025 15:55

@KPPlumbing

my mum said she had no symptoms and doesn’t understand all the obsession today, I’m 6 months since last period currently (had a 4 month break last year so not calling it yet) and like her no symptoms to speak of except poor sleep but I’ve been like that since having dc 20 years ago! No everyone has a bad experience at menopause but our stories aren’t very interesting to hear

My step mum claims she had no symptoms.
Myself, my brother and my stepbrother and stepsister (and probably my dad but he’d never admit it) who had to live with her at the time would beg to differ! She was horrific!

I have intermittent symptoms which I assume are related such as anxiety, weight gain, night sweats. Currently 81 days with no period for about the 3rd time. I’m 50.

KillingMeWithSilence · 28/07/2025 20:53

My sister said my mum realised “i am such an angry person now i am going through the change”. It was hilarious because we thought she seemed calmer to when we were little.

i dont think my gp has even asked. I have a meds review on friday. Time to mention it methinks

I’m 51 & it’s been 90 days which is my biggest gap so far. The hot flushes have increased but that seems to be it.

I’d love to just realise one morning that I must be post menopausal!

tinytemper66 · 28/07/2025 21:12

Lucky you…
I have gone 9 months twice with no periods and when hello Mother Nature. This happened for the 2nd time two weeks ago. I will be 59 in a couple of weeks for goodness sake!
