Gym have refused to refund membership during renovations

My gym is what they’d call a ‘leisure club’ as part of a hotel chain and has a pool etc which I usually use on each visit.

The female changing rooms are currently being renovated, and as a solution, the hotel have put aside 3 of the rooms on the first floor which can be used as temporary changing rooms.

The issue with this, is that if you are using the pool, you have to publicly walk from the rooms to the pool area (and vice versa) - they have not provided robes.

I requested a partial refund of my membership whilst these works are carried out as I can’t be realistically expected to still use the pool when I have to parade through the hotel wearing my costume.

This was flatly denied on the basis the facilities (pool) remain available. I escalated to the hotel manager who maintained this position, but said my membership could be suspended without the usual notice if I was unhappy. I still use the gym, so this wouldn’t work.

Do you agree they are being CF’s?

Can't you bring your own robe?

I was going to say the same.

Indianajet · 24/07/2025 18:55

Just bring your own robe.

6namechange3 · 24/07/2025 18:58

They have offered to suspend your membership without notice or you could wear a robe. Both sound like reasonable solutions.

CinnamonBuns67 · 24/07/2025 18:59

Yabu bring a dressing gown from home. Yes it's not ideal but it won't be for too long.

SoftLass · 24/07/2025 19:00

Just get a changing robe and slip it on over the top - job done.

bridgetreilly · 24/07/2025 19:03

You are being ridiculous. If the pool wasn’t available, sure. But because a towelling robe isn’t available? No.

Can't you bring your own robe?

1 - I don’t own one which is suitable
2 - I would still be somewhat ‘scantily-clad’ in the public areas

Put your towel round you ?

6namechange3 · 24/07/2025 19:12

Towel yourself as dry as you can and slip on some old PJs or joggers and a t-shirt?

Vaxtable · 24/07/2025 19:14

Just get a towelling robe and use that, or a big towel wrapped round you, it’s not difficult

BallerinaRadio · 24/07/2025 19:14

Maybe don't 'parade' through the hotel and get a robe or a towel it doesn't seem that big of a deal

You are scantily clad when in a public area when using the pool/gym

DustlandFairytaleBeginning · 24/07/2025 19:16

You are being incredibly precious! I'd just pull on a loose maxi dress over my costume if I felt self conscious in a robe. Any cover up would do.

MakingPlans2025 · 24/07/2025 19:17

Wrap your towel around you. What a bizarre post. Are you ok or do you have very high levels of anxiety normally.

Laura95167 · 24/07/2025 19:19

Someones a CF

What do you think people staying in the hotel do? Its normal to go from your room to the pool in a robe.

Poonu · 24/07/2025 19:21

I feel you. My DL club we have not had swimming pool access for two months and many other renovations over the past six months and they've only paused membership for two months which still means you pay 16 pounds each month. And you cannot say anything to them because they're not interested.

PorridgeAndSyrup · 24/07/2025 19:21

Wear a loose cotton maxi dress - easy to put on over your swimsuit, easy to take off poolside and leave on a bench, you'll look perfectly well dressed, and it will roll up light and small to carry in your bag, unlike a proper dressing gown.

I used the pool in the basement of a hotel in similar circumstances once, and me and my friend walked down through the whole hotel in our swimsuits. I felt SO UNCOMFORTABLE, it was really awkward. Lots of people stared. It was like one of those dreams where you're naked. So I don't blame you for feeling awkward.

Mrsttcno1 · 24/07/2025 19:22

I do wonder now some people manage to get
through life with no problem solving skills at all. Bring a towel, wrap it round yourself and crack on.

But you don't mind being "scantily clad" in the gym? Confused

Or come to that, any loose, light clothing - loose cotton trousers and a T-shirt would do exactly the same job.

You will absolutely have something you can wear OP or get a cheap one from somewhere and a pair of sliders or something.

They are right, the facilities are still available, just not the way you would like.
