Gym have refused to refund membership during renovations

My gym is what they’d call a ‘leisure club’ as part of a hotel chain and has a pool etc which I usually use on each visit.

The female changing rooms are currently being renovated, and as a solution, the hotel have put aside 3 of the rooms on the first floor which can be used as temporary changing rooms.

The issue with this, is that if you are using the pool, you have to publicly walk from the rooms to the pool area (and vice versa) - they have not provided robes.

I requested a partial refund of my membership whilst these works are carried out as I can’t be realistically expected to still use the pool when I have to parade through the hotel wearing my costume.

This was flatly denied on the basis the facilities (pool) remain available. I escalated to the hotel manager who maintained this position, but said my membership could be suspended without the usual notice if I was unhappy. I still use the gym, so this wouldn’t work.

Do you agree they are being CF’s?

You’re being silly. Just wrap a towel around you like everyone else and get on with it. No one is looking at you.

When my David Lloyd club was being refurbished, there was no pool for about 6 months. They gave everyone a discount but I only use the pool and one class - i told them I would go elsewhere if they didnt let me suspend my membership. They reluctantly agreed. Anyway, you could try threatening to leave if they don't give you a discount. Otherwise i suggest you buy a dry robe. .

If you want to make a point, walk through the hotel soaking wet and dripping over the carpets. Personally I'd prefer to get changed in a comfy hotel room over a cold, murky changing-room, but I imagine it could get a bit icky if the rooms aren't cleaned regularly.

You don't have some form of cover up? You've never been on holiday? You are taking the piss. Everyone has a cover up. But they've gone out of their way to help you. YABVVU

There is a CF here, but it’s not the gym.

People walk through hotels to go to the hotel spa in dressing gowns so I don’t see the difference. If you don’t have a dressing gown (really?) just wrap your towel around you. Presumably other users of the pool are doing the same so you’ll hardly be standing out.

You are scantily clad when in a public area when using the pool/gym

I was going to point this out. There are solutions you are being very specific in your expectations and you are disappointing yourself with your own expectations.

mamagogo1 · 24/07/2025 19:36

They offered to suspend, that’s a reasonable offer, just take a bathrobe with you or change on the side of the pool - we do at our pool

You are being ridiculous. If the pool wasn’t available, sure. But because a towelling robe isn’t available? No.

I agree with this, really. I’m also a member of a health club and I wouldn’t expect a partial refund if I had to just bring my own robe for a few weeks 🤷🏻‍♀️

Summer frock to throw on for in between the room and the pool?
One of these:?

The hotel guests will go from their room to the pool in a robe or something, so it's no different.

Oooh, I’m going to get one! Looks so cozy!

Why not just buy a towelling robe? This one is £10, comes next day and wouldnT leave you scantily clad at all.

That is nicer and cheaper than the yucky green one I got in IKEA

Hankunamatata · 24/07/2025 20:09

Your a cf. Put anything on you want to walk to changing room - coat, blanket, giant towel

ButterCrackers · 24/07/2025 20:13

Wear a long towelling bathrobe and flip flops

Whaleandsnail6 · 24/07/2025 20:25

I think this is a complete none issue

Just put something light weight ( dress, t shirt and shorts, dressing gown, jogging bottoms...literally anything but jeans) over your swim wear and carry your towel to the pool area, dry off a little when you get out and put your lightweight clothes over the wet costume.

I think what the club have offered is more than fair.

In consumer law they're not in breach of contract, or your statutory rights.

Accept the pause on membership or don't and shut up.

How much of a refund do you want from them?
