AIBU for pronouncing the name Brooke as BrOOKe rather than Bruck

I’m a Geordie and pronounce words such as Book, Look and Cook with an oo sound rather than the uck sound.
A family who are from about an hour a way said that her daughter is sick of everyone pronouncing her name incorrectly.

I explained that it’s an accent thing as we pronounce those words with an oo sound rather that uck so it wouldn’t occur to most people to pronounce it that way and they wouldn’t deliberately mispronounce her name!

Just as if I go another part of the country or different country they pronounce my name differently depending on their accent.

AIBU?

YWBU if you continued to pronounce her name wrongly now that you’ve been told the correct pronunciation, but not for getting it wrong in the first place.

I agree.

Why would you want to continue upsetting your friend's daughter after being told how she would prefer her name to be pronounced and knowing your way of saying it upsets her.

Surely that is self centred, selfish and mean spirited if you continue.

NarnianQueen · 22/07/2025 12:00

It’s not a wrong pronunciation though is it? It’s just an accent. If I went to America I wouldn’t be “mispronouncing” The weird water of I said it with a “t” instead of a “d”sound. But I would be pronouncing it differently from the locals

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 22/07/2025 12:01

Is there any particular reason why you can't pronounce her daughter's name the way she wants you to?

Presumably you manage not to make the words "cough" and "dough" rhyme.

Crunchienuts · 22/07/2025 12:03

Haha. Was just thinking that is how my Geordie Nan would pronounce it. I think as it is her name rather than just a random word you should pronounce it how she wants it though.

KrisAkabusi · 22/07/2025 12:04

YABU because you're making the choice to continue mispronouncing her name instead of saying it the way she wants.

CopperWhite · 22/07/2025 12:05

I have a name with an ‘I’ in it that some people with accents produce as an ‘ee’ instead. It wouldn’t occur to me to be offended at other people’s accents.

Chersfrozenface · 22/07/2025 12:05

The common noun 'brook' , the surname Brooke and the transferred given name are all pronounced with a double o sound in standard English and in all the areas I know of.

See the Wiktionary entry
https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/Brooke

The audio file is of a Southern English speaker.

'bruck' is a very, er, individual pronunciation.

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 22/07/2025 12:07

I honestly didn’t realise we were ‘pronouncing’ it wrong until she said something to us. Barring in mind the child
is now 7.
It never occurred to me that he her parents calling her Bruck and is calling he Brook was anything different as they would say buck, luck and cuck rather than the ook.

Just as whenever I travel people pronounce my name differently.
I said that people would never intentionally pronounce her name different it’s an accent thing.

I didn’t say I repeatedly mispronounced a name and upset a child.

YANBU. People with non-rhotic-type accents often don’t understand this. I’d have to put on a ridiculous fake English accent to make ‘Bruck’ from Brooke.

DiscoBob · 22/07/2025 12:09

I don't know which accent would pronounce it as 'Bruck'. Surely it's either your way, or the other pronouciation like 'Book'. But never 'Bruck'? Actually maybe South West accent might sound a bit like that?

HotCrossBunplease · 22/07/2025 12:10

Just call her Pet at all times 😀

I agree with the others. If it’s any consolation though, I’m Scottish and I would not say “Bruck” naturally either with that combo of letters, though I can obviously make the sound when I say things like muck and truck. If asked I’d try to remember to say it her way but I can imagine it slipping back inadvertently to rhyming with book and cook.

Toospotty · 22/07/2025 12:10

Now you know presumably you'll just say it the way she usually does?

I'm the other way round, married to a Geordie, and I now pronounce anything local the 'right' way just because it's the way people are used to hearing it. That would include anyone's name in the situation you're describing I think.

whitewinespritzerandastraw · 22/07/2025 12:10

Bruck is hideous, why would they want it pronounced like that?

Im Scottish and would say Brooke. But I’d be very surprised if an English person told me to actively say “Bruck”

Jamesblonde2 · 22/07/2025 12:10

Same as scousers would pronounce it OP.

PinkiOcelot · 22/07/2025 12:12

My niece is called Brooke and we pronounce it Brooke not Bruck.

I was taught at school that OO was pronounced oo not u. You’re not wrong.

echt · 22/07/2025 12:13

It's her name, so say as she wants.
I have a name that a good number of Aussies say as ICK rather than the schwa which it is: think paddick for Aussies as against paddock in the UK.

I correct them every time. It is my name.

I'm from the north of England and get the accent, but when it comes to people's names you do what they say.

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 22/07/2025 12:14

@doodleschnoodlethis is how I feel and I now try and not use her name as I don’t want to offend.
@HotCrossBunpleasei do a lot of flower and pet now! As it might slip out.
Im just very cautious as I have called her with the ooo sound for so long.

doodleschnoodle · 22/07/2025 12:14

For example, in Scottish accents the ‘uh ’ kind of sound from ‘oo’ doesn’t exist. Moon and book have the same oo sound in the middle. Look and Luke sound pretty much the same.

It’s like complaining someone from France has a French accent when they say your name.

Overthebow · 22/07/2025 12:14

Does anyone pronounce it Bruck? Book isn’t pronounced buck, look isn’t pronounced luck so I’m not sure where you’re getting this from. Brook does rhymes with book and look though, but no u sound. I from the south and no one would say bruck.

MarioLink · 22/07/2025 12:15

It rhymes with book so you can end Brooke however you pronounce the end of book surely. To me it's accent no mispronunciation.

MrsEmmelinePankhurst · 22/07/2025 12:15

I’m a bit confused actually.

Are they pronouncing it “bruck” to rhyme with luck, truck etc??

cuz that’s just plain wrong!!!!

orangewasp · 22/07/2025 12:15

DiscoBob · 22/07/2025 12:09

I do pronounce book as buck. Other than an ooo sound I can't think of an alternative

Dolamroth · 22/07/2025 12:17

But in Geordie that's how it's pronounced?!
YANBU

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 22/07/2025 12:18

@MrsEmmelinePankhurstyes, like truck, luck
