Working expectations for parents on UC

BlackCatGreyWhiskers · 21/07/2025 12:27

AIBU to find this really frustrating? Basically there is no expectation for parents to work until their child is age 3. So if a family has more than one child that could be several years.

Whereas maternity leave is only 9-12months.

Especially as universal credit claimants can actually get help towards childcare expenses.

I don’t understand why there is a mismatch between the employed and unemployed?

When I went back after maternity, my pay was around £1500 and my childcare £800, then after I went back with my second my childcare went up to £1200. So I earnt next to nothing for 5 years before the eldest started school.

This person is just trolling. Brand new car on UC? Yeah okay hun. You keep telling yourself that you’re rolling in it and living lavishly. 🥴

Haha very jealous people on here

I feel very smug I work part time and people work full time with no life. My future is took care of, I spend time with my son instead of palming him off places. Life is good. Bye hun

Your future is time limited, as once your son is an adult, your support is cut off. Your future is hardly protected when you’re earning so little that any pension contributions will be peanuts. Unless your future is only looking 2-3yrs ahead. Most of us on here are planning longer term. I’ll think of you when i’m on my retirement world cruise with my 300k lump sum. Toodle pip.

I am not jealous of you. I actually find you quite strange.

windyfarmers · 21/07/2025 21:50

Oh ffs. They do that as it's CHEAPER to pay someone not to work than to pay 85% of their childcare costs if they're on a low wage, even after the child turns 3!

Yeah dead jealous of your UC payment, as it’s so generous isn’t it.

Exactly, yet childcare spaces are taken by parents who don’t work at all. It’s so hard to get a childcare space at nurseries now, there needs to be some prioritisation system.

So when do these children go to nursery then?

Zanatdy · 21/07/2025 21:58

TwoFeralKids · 21/07/2025 21:54

So when do these children go to nursery then?

At a school nursery like used to be the case. If parents are not working; why do they need childcare. If the Government had provided all the extra childcare places to match their idea to get children into nursery much younger than fair enough. But they didn’t, and now they are taking much needed space in nurseries and it’s causing a massive headache to nurseries too, many going out of business. It was a terrible idea to implement without the infrastructure to support it.

Apologies I thought you said you were coming out with less than £300 pcm.

Justchilling07 · 21/07/2025 22:01

Pirating55 · 21/07/2025 21:16

Again not my problem. People think I'm abusing the system and I'm not.
I work part time, I'm on UC and have s good life.

It’s your attitude, reading your comments, you’re just hoping to get other posters angry. There’s no need of it.This is just another benefit bashing thread and you’re part of it, adding to it! I don’t get why you’re bragging.I claimed benefits for a year when l lost my job, l felt worthless, particularly the attitudes of some people like you’re some kind of low life.I found it really hard, thankfully l was able to get a job, where l could use my qualifications and experience.
Shame on you, you’re just adding fuel to the fire.

I do actually agree with you on this! Parents who don't work are allowed nursery places which I don't understand why. I work part time and can get breakfast club and after school club free of charge as I'm on universal credit but it doesn't make sense. It does need changing in terms of helping out families more with childcare places

TwoFeralKids · 21/07/2025 22:03

PeonyPatch · 21/07/2025 21:22

He’s trying. It’s been reliable for the past few years and has earned well. Unfortunately since COVID hit, his industry has been significantly impacted. It’s not easy to just retrain in something else at this stage in our life either.

I am simply showing another side of the coin because at the moment there’s a lot of focus on how hard it is for people on benefits when actually, they’re probably more secure than those who have a mortgage or pay rent privately…

I am on UC and we have a mortgage as do others.

So you think I shouldn't have put my son in because I work very little despite the fact he is speech delayed and possibly autistic? Many of these children probably aren't being taught to read or hold an pencil. The earlier in nursery the better.
