Always using the wrong name!

This is partly a vent and partly an AIBU. Just had the DH's family to stay for the weekend - SiL can be quite challenging in many ways but has driven me nuts all weekend by saying DD's name wrong. DD has a very normal name which I wouldn't consider unusual and yet SiL keeps calling her a very similar name (think Amelia instead of Amelie). I keep correcting her but she still keeps doing it. 😤
DD is 6 now and it is getting to a point that I'm getting seriously pissed off with it. Do I need to let it go or should I make a bigger deal out of it? I just can't understand how someone seems to find it so difficult to get someone's name right!

I absolutely see what you mean & I understand your point. Admittedly I would rather come on the internet and vent about it anonymously as I don't want to have an argument with SiL & make things awkward!

You are right, SiL is not toxic. Her heart is in the right place and she shows an interest in the kids and she has been fantastic for my BiL. While I find her hard work, I am not so naive/arrogant to think she doesn't think the same about me!

However...DD is 6 and quite sensitive and does not like being called the wrong name. It makes her feel like SiL can't be arsed to learn her name properly which upsets her a little. I can tell her that she should just get over it, but she is 6 and also I think has a right to have people learn to say her name properly! & as her mother, it is also my job to fight her corner!

SIL is being lazy and rude. DD has every bloody right to want to be called by her PROPER name by her relatives. It's an incredibly basic act of totally standard respect.

It is precisely that SIl can't be arsed, or worse is doing it on purpose.

Stick up for your child, and yes it is your place to fight in her corner.

Just keep saying the name when she is there. (Disclaimer, you might actually go mad). Oh Mary, yes Mary darling come and say hello to sil. You know sil, Mary was just telling me x, weren't you Mary?
If she doesn't get the mesage and persists it's deliberate.

I think you need to do more than just say DDs name correctly, and say to SIL that she is upsetting DD by calling her the wrong name.

This is quite a weird post. Your child is upset. What are you posting about it here for?

Next visit make sure dd is wearing a top with her name on in huge letters... If sil still gets it wrong suggest she gets her eyes tested....

That is actually a genius idea!! Looking at t-shirts now! Also sorts out a bday present for DD so it's a win-win 😁

The t-shirt might work, but there's no guarantee : it depends if your SIL reads it properly - she might not.
If that fails you could try the rhyme solution : it's Amelie like "family" or it's Amelia like the flower "Camelia".

On a personal note, my sister's boyfriend constantly mispronounces her name... he's heard it said often enough, but he just can't remember how to say it right. And that's not an uncommon name either [think Pamela / Pameeler[ As she is an adult we've just given up on correcting him.

I think you and your six year old should make a string necklace with a large written sign indicating her name.

Also when they first arrive, take SIL aside especially to tell her that now DD is six she recognises her name well and is starting to feel unhappy when her dear Aunt calls her the wrong name. Show Aunt the two names written down. Show her and point out the difference in pronunciation. Educate her.

Everytime she does it, just reply with, who's Amelia? (Example) Yes u might look a bit pedantic but it also shows her up and that you are annoyed in a less confrontinal way. But make sure u say it every time, she'll soon catch on!!
