AIBU To Consider Portable sunbeds

We are going on holiday soon. The hotel doesn’t have a pool although it overlooks the beach.

Apparently it costs €27 a day to hire two sunbeds on the beach, so for the four of us for a fortnight it’s €756.

That’s quite a chunk of money on top of our holiday.

Having looked online, a lot of people buy their own ones there, although the local shops charge a hefty premium for them.

A friend has suggested taking our own fold up sunbeds in our suitcases. I’m not sure how I feel about this as I don’t want to look like a cheapskate.

Any ideas where we can buy lightweight ones in the UK please?

I’ll then check them out and make a decision as to whether we just pay to hire them on the beach.

Thanks

Can’t you just lie on a towel?

We took similar to these for years. So much better, you can find a quieter spot on the beach.

PiggieWig · 21/07/2025 05:50

I’d be inclined to put my towel on a lilo

150kg would require an interesting baggage allowance.

LightandBreezy · 21/07/2025 05:57

@spoonbillstretford 150 kg is the load they can bear, not the weight of the chairs themselves.

Bjorkdidit · 21/07/2025 06:00

It doesn't weigh 150 kg, it's rated for up to 150 kg. Almost no-one could lift it if it weighed that much.

But do people really pay to hire sunbeds every single day of their holiday? Surely no-one does that? You'd either go to a hotel with sunbeds included, lie on a towel or buy one there, they must be far cheaper than the hire cost.

But the smart thing to do would be to find out what happens to the sunbeds that people buy and don't want to take home with them, there must be a huge supply of second hand unwanted sunbeds.

Phew.

Another vote for using a beach towel. Keep it simple.

What's the worry about 'looking like a cheapskate'?

Bjorkdidit · 21/07/2025 06:27

I suppose the other consideration if you take your own would be how much luggage you're taking and if you have spare allowance within what you've already paid.

We sometimes go on Jet2holidays packages that come with two cabin bags and a hold case each as standard, but we don't need anywhere near that amount so in theory could take sunbeds in a suitcase for no extra cost. However if you're going on Ryanair or Easyjet and an extra bag could be up to £100, that obviously needs to be factored in.

But I don't understand why you think you'd look like a cheapskate? Is this a very fancy place where everything is eye watering cost and people just spend lots of money?

Twelftytwo · 21/07/2025 06:33

I would int worry about looking like a cheap skate if you're going to a place that doesn't provide sun beds

Agree with pp about what happens to the ones people buy there?

TheChosenTwo · 21/07/2025 06:36

I don’t think we’ve ever paid to hire sunbeds on the beach, just used beach towels. But we’ve never spent all day at the beach on holiday, we go down for an hour or two at the end of the day for a swim/last sunbathe.
do you plan on spending all day every day at the beach? How old are dc?

Comedycook · 21/07/2025 06:36

To whom? Random people on the beach? Who cares?! Personally I'd just pay a beach towel or blanket down and lay on that.

MimiSunshine · 21/07/2025 09:35

If you want to guarantee a bed and not pay loads for it then pack and take some.
but I bet loads of people buy them there and leave them.

we never buy a beach brolly on holiday as we find they can’t be packed so people leave them in obvious communal places for another person to use and then we do the same

TaborlinTheGreat · 21/07/2025 09:43

I don't think I've ever used a sunbed on a beach. What's wrong with a towel? 27 Euros a day for two sunbeds is absurd. What a money-grabbing racket!

NeverTrustTheScales · 21/07/2025 11:58

How big is your sutcase? Any of the ones libnked would take up most of it, unless you are going in the UK by car and can sling it in just put a towel on a lilo

Slightlysimi · 21/07/2025 12:29

Yeah, buy one. Some decent options there. There will be loads of people just lying on towels, but I would personally prefer something more comfortable.

That said, I'd never be spending an entire two week holiday just lying on the beach every day. Is that really what you'll be doing every day for two weeks?

Ohnobackagain · 21/07/2025 13:36

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 21/07/2025 06:17

If you go for the blue stripe you can get 2 for £22.99 @chambawamba

Darragon · 21/07/2025 13:40

What an absolute waste of crap being used for a week or two then going to landfill. Everyone doing this instead of lying on a bloody towel like a normal person should be ashamed of themselves! YABVVVVU.

This? Why do you care what randoms on the beach you'll never go to again think?

exLtEveDallas · 21/07/2025 13:51

I can't cope sitting or lying down without back support (injury) so we had these at our caravan for using on the beach, they worked really well.

DD preferred one of the blow up sausage things- they are really lightweight but only good for lying down.
