AIBU To Consider Portable sunbeds

We are going on holiday soon. The hotel doesn’t have a pool although it overlooks the beach.

Apparently it costs €27 a day to hire two sunbeds on the beach, so for the four of us for a fortnight it’s €756.

That’s quite a chunk of money on top of our holiday.

Having looked online, a lot of people buy their own ones there, although the local shops charge a hefty premium for them.

A friend has suggested taking our own fold up sunbeds in our suitcases. I’m not sure how I feel about this as I don’t want to look like a cheapskate.

Any ideas where we can buy lightweight ones in the UK please?

I’ll then check them out and make a decision as to whether we just pay to hire them on the beach.

Thanks

I grew up by the beach and spent day after day there. Never once did I lie on a sunbed. It was tartan car blanket, beach towel or lilo.

I would say hire sunbeds for approx 7 days, and the rest of the time just use towels on beach. Alternatively hire 2 for the whole time and take turns.

I suppose the other consideration if you take your own would be how much luggage you're taking and if you have spare allowance within what you've already paid.

We sometimes go on Jet2holidays packages that come with two cabin bags and a hold case each as standard, but we don't need anywhere near that amount so in theory could take sunbeds in a suitcase for no extra cost. However if you're going on Ryanair or Easyjet and an extra bag could be up to £100, that obviously needs to be factored in.

But I don't understand why you think you'd look like a cheapskate? Is this a very fancy place where everything is eye watering cost and people just spend lots of money?

No, not a fancy place. If fancy, hotel would have pool and possibly private beach with free sunbeds. Sounds like budget holiday, to which cost of sunbeds would proportionately add a lot.

Who cares about looking cheap to people who are gouging you.

Although I do wonder why you booked a hotel without free sunbeds since you're planning to spend every day lounging.

EggnogNoggin · 22/07/2025 11:53

Are there any relevant Facebook groups for people going on holiday there?

Sometimes people sell/giveaway stuff they've bought to avoid binning it or bringing it home.

Sgtmajormummy · 22/07/2025 13:17

OP, If your group includes children you can rent just one unit (umbrella+2 sun beds) and maybe add a rented deckchair.
When we had a fixed spot for a week there was plenty of perching on absent neighbours’ sunbeds but not full takeover. Although we would say things like “we’re not coming back today, please use our spot if you need more space”.

We've done this very thing several times.
We have the design similar to those already linked to (but from decathlon)
See here
They fit in our regular hold suitcase and don't add much weight.
Adds a bit of comfort on the beach and handy by the pool if there are no loungers.
I don't give a shiny shit what other people think about me though. Unless I'm doing something illegal you can jog on....

I've used these before too. Very useful. I wouldn't care if I looked cheap - and I am sure locals won't be using the sunbeds.

GrandmaSusie · 22/07/2025 18:55

Don't sun bathe! It's dangerous and will make your skin wrinkly and leathery. Wear lots of sunscreen with a high UV and a floppy, wider brimmed hat on the beach. If a suntan is really important to you, try a lotion that will turn you tan without the sun. You'll thank me when you get older and have glowing, youthful skin.

It’s usually pretty easy to buy chairs and a parasol in your resort. Where I go people often leave them behind and post their location on the local fb page so they can be reused.

150kg would require an interesting baggage allowance.

I think the 150kg relates to the users weight

There are huge numbers of people who can’t just ‘lie on a towel’ without causing significant pain and reduced capacity both at the time and in following weeks, or who can’t really get down and then back up. I sometimes forget how oblivious the privilege of the fully able bodied is.

That said I don’t think anyone needs to have a medical reason to justify wanting a chair on the beach, and it seems possible without dumping it in landfill after two weeks.

Well, there are loads of us who can lie on towels but have other issues. I would love to be able to go somewhere without having to acquire an excessive knowledge of where the nearest toilets are.

What an absolute waste of crap being used for a week or two then going to landfill. Everyone doing this instead of lying on a bloody towel like a normal person should be ashamed of themselves! YABVVVVU.

I can't lie on a towel

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/08/2025 11:23

PiggieWig · 21/07/2025 05:50

I’d be inclined to put my towel on a lilo

Came on to say this.

Amazing being able to have those options and use them isnt it. Not everyone can

Yes exactly, there are many potential issues that really mean others should reserve any judgement.
