I am not sure I agree that Teachers have absolutely exhausting jobs - much more so than most jobs - as said by man on r4 this morning

These threads always make me laugh. I am a nurse, have been for 30 years. I worked for 5 years at a special school. OMG the teachers were genuinely pathetic, zero resilience and very precious. We nurses used to laugh our socks off at what we dealt with in a day versus what they did. They’re just not a strong breed, in my experience.
I have teachers in my family and they are a bit weak too.
I lecture at a uni and it’s easy!!! Students can be a pain but it’s hardly night shifts on the care of the elderly ward.

i was simply quoting the eejit on the radio

You have t yet explained why you thin’ he was an eejit. You said he said that teaching was more exhausting than most jobs. You’ve said you think some jobs are more exhausting than teaching. These two views are not incompatible. What proportion of jobs do you think are more exhausting than teaching? How have you worked it out? Is it more than 50% of jobs? Because if not, the eejit and you are saying the same thing.

Bringmeahigherlove · 20/07/2025 21:37

I’m a teacher. I don’t think anyone would argue that it’s a tough job. There will be many other tough jobs out there. I don’t think a competition of who has the shittest job is particularly helpful!

you lot have put me off teaching, dont worry, let alone teachers, quite frightening! #

sounds like you would miss it if you gave up

What were you expecting from this thread? Did you just hope you’d get a load of people agreeing with you?

No I’m fine, I've got 6 weeks off 👍🏻

, 😂😂😂😂😂

Silvertulips · 20/07/2025 21:38

i worked as a Teaching assistant, 8:30 til 3:30 -

I now work 9/5 and do overtime. I have less holidays - 5 weeks and I am far less tired than school work.

Would never go back, even with 13 weeks holiday a year.

Perhaps consider that there different types of exhaustion, physical, mental and emotional.

This there are different types of exhaustion and teaching whilst not the highest in any of the 3 is high is all 3 - it is the all rounder of jobs (along with nursing)

all the jobs you have said are physically exhausting yes at the top mentally yes though less emotionally probably not as much

SouthernNights59 · 20/07/2025 21:39

I worked in admin/customer services for over 40 years, and have also done manual jobs - nothing would entice me to be a teacher. YABU, and in my opinion they deserve those long holidays.

It kind of blows my mind that anyone does a TA job. Like why, for minimum wage? You could be stacking in a warehouse or serving behind the till in M&S. why would anyone chose to do this instead? It’s like the ultimate piss take job. It makes me angry that it’s always women who do it and have the piss taken out of them. I do wonder if it attracts women who think they are a bit better than a self stacker though so exchange a decent job for some perceived status.

Honest answer? The hours were great when DD was little, plus the job has massively changed in the past 10/15 years. Now I probably have a bit of “Stockholm syndrome”. Grin Seriously though, I am really, really good at my job (which is why I get all this shit thrown at me) and I do love it when it’s all I have to do, plus I love the kids(most days). I do joke a lot that I should just get a job stacking shelves, cans don’t talk back. Grin

TheodoraCrumpet · 20/07/2025 21:40

I'm going to do that annoying thing where I talk about my DH, because I've never been a teacher. He has, and decided, a long time ago, that although he enjoyed and was good at actually teaching, all the bollocks around the job took up way too much time. And sure, the holidays were good, he could earn more and be less stressed doing something else. Well, now he's winding down to retirement, and looking for something rewarding he can do part time. He's able to teach a number of in demand subjects. Would he do it? Would he fuck. Would I want to live with him if he did? Hell no.

Well have you actually asked your welder husband what he thinks? Since you were wondering about it in your OP.

mamagogo1 · 20/07/2025 21:41

Teaching is tough but so are many other jobs, and they don’t get 13 weeks annual leave, 5 weeks and 3 days more commonly. I have lots of respect for the job that leavers do but I start to get annoyed when I hear them on tv saying they are so hard done by, try being a carer, paid less, anti social hours and minimum holidays yet you have minimum holidays and less job security too, yes less qualifications but then nurses, that’s tough too… I wouldnt want to work on the roads, empty bins, drive a truck, fight in the armed forces, police, work in restaurants etc etc all have tough moments and many of us in office roles do unpaid overtime too

Frederica4 · 20/07/2025 21:41

I’ve got 2 under 2 right now. Neither of them sleep well but I’m so much more well rested than when I’m teaching. I used to get to work for about 7 and leave about twelve hours later then go home to do more work, sometimes until the early hours when a senior leader. Weekend and ‘holiday’ work was an absolute given. Duty during break and lunch time every day. Oh, and after school every day. Non-teaching periods were spent in meetings. I dread to think how many hours I did a week.

No, we’re just sick and tired of people with no experience (what is your job?) claiming to know all about ours

what are you implying?

I am saying you do not work. You do not have a job. It is clear.

saraclara · 20/07/2025 21:42

RevolutionHere · 20/07/2025 20:53

because there are other jobs more exhausting imo

How would you know, unless you actually did then all?

You seem purely focused on physical exhaustion. I'd say that is mental and emotional exhaustion that's most likely to make people wake away from their jobs.

That seems a little unfair.

Thank you for this. It still blows my mind that it’s a job that exists and that people willingly do it, although yes, everyone I know who does it does so for their own childcare needs, usually in their own children’s school.

It’s telling that none of their dads need to do a crap job to make the family function though 🤨

Frederica4 · 20/07/2025 21:43

My friend who is also a teacher jokes we just do 12 months’ work in 9 when people say we have twelve weeks a year off.

I don't think as a teacher I've ever said other people don't have it hard. But why is it our profession is looked down upon? Yes we have these "breaks" but when we are dealing with children who have been abused, children who we need to feed breakfast because they haven't had it, being literally spat on by parents, trying to nurture these children...who cares what "holidays" we get? I've never ever said my job is harder than anyone else's but why also, shouldn't my profession get the recognition it deserves?

Goady AF.

I genuinely think the mental effort of teaching is in the top 10 mental effort jobs. There was some research done about the number of decisions teachers have to make and it was bonkers, like 400 every hour. I don't think it's more exhausting than a lot of manual jobs though.

You're not really here for a debate so I'm out.
