Raynor Winn/Sally Walker's statement Raynor Winn

New posters welcome. It would be helpful to read at least the four Observer items above before posting.

To all - Please be extremely cautious when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no direct connection to the story, and around the understandable health speculations, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Please do not engage with visitors who seem to have their own agenda and seek to derail. Avoid @'ing and quoting them as this will only encourage them back to the threads.

We have done amazingly well together - in the main that is, not mentioning any names but you know who you are! - for eight threads so far. I can't be on the threads as much as I'd like so all help with keeping our discussion ticking along in a healthy and civil fashion is very welcome.

No saltiness. Keep to the path. Thank you.

I watched Apple Cider Vinegar on Netflix over the weekend, and then - as it was a highly fictionalised, albeit riveting, account of the Belle Gibson affair - the Netflix 2-part documentary on the same topic. The parallels with her and SW are jaw-dropping. There's a clip in the documentary of BG's (in)famous interview in the Australian 60 Minutes show where the redoubtable Tara Brown absolutely skewers her - yet still she doubles down with such memorable phrases as 'it was MY reality'... I highly recommend both of these as a fascinating look into the world of the super-plausible sociopath 😎

I was too late to edit in this brilliantly insightful comment from one of Belle Gibson's friends in the documentary: 'She doesn't have friends, she has hosts'.

Sorry, veering off (the path) from French properties ...

Cornishwafer · 22/07/2025 11:30

SW's statement says that the property is "on the boundary of a family member's property" and that Raymoth bought it to "prevent a developer buying it." This! Another example of how SW doesn't seem to be able to do much without presenting it as an act of her own kindness like saving the puppy from the bucket.

I know a little bit about that area of France and property there....If a developer really wanted the land then it would have hardly been to build a KFC, no, it's intended usage would have either been for an agricultural building or, more likely to construct one of those modern, rendered (crepi covered) beige bungalows that a lot of French people in those areas favour because they are easier to keep clean than the stone properties beloved by expats. So perhaps Raymoth did someone out of a plot they wanted to build a home on to stay local to their family...ironic if so.

Agree, I mentioned cognitive dissonance earlier, but I’d now add ‘downright hypocrisy.’

for all the eco-warrior, freedom-fighting, nature- loving, tree-hugging, finger-knit your own beanie hat from sea grass mentality…. there’s a hell of a lot of capitalist behaviour.

Agree that Apple Cider Vinegar is very good! Another vote for it if anyone here is looking for a new series to get your teeth into.

Also hard for SW to play the "memory" excuse card now, given she has said she initially wrote TSP to aid TW whose illness seemed to be causing him to forget details about the walk that SW could recall.

Debsthegardener · 22/07/2025 13:40

I also rate Apple Cider Vinegar but would recommend watching the Australian 60 minute interview beforehand - it’s an absolute corker. One of the best.

I also recommend The Dropout on BBC iPlayer about the first biotech billionaire Elizabeth Holmes. She claimed to have invented the means to blood test for a range of illnesses based in a single drop of blood - at the age of 19. Hmm, yeah, okay!

I read that as Debs the gangster. I was surprised she was interested in this topic. Sorry but it made me laugh!

User14March · 22/07/2025 13:49

In Landlines when a defeated Ray & unusually alert Moth arrive in Edinburgh on bikes, Ray reminds us he’s losing his memory. Ray exclaims ‘you know we were in Scotland thirty five years ago’ Moth doesn’t immediately recall their wedding day. Am not sure I would after pushing it like they have that day. Moth seems pretty super human to me yet he seems to be reminded of his frailty often: ‘I watch him as he stops walking and puts his hand to his face’. Ray is ‘annoyed’ he’s forgotten then admits it’s taken her until midnight to remember herself.

Maybe I am missing something but I am now looking for these signs of decline & wondering at Ray’s expectations & interpretations. The injured lamb etc along the way provide poignant symbols and metaphors that tug at heartstrings. Mind you, to give benefit of doubt she knows him best.

A thought/theory crossed my mind last night, about the French property- the mystery of which niggles me.

Could it be that Martyn W actually originally owned both Pigionnierre AND the neighbouring property? And it was he who sold the neighbouring property to Tim which somehow resulted in a big fallout/"trail of destruction"?

Reasoning below:

The DM story stated the Walker siblings' families were out there in Le Village du Dropt in 2004 - indeed there was a photo of them taken by a local who dated it to 2004. So Martyn W likely owned the Pigionierre in 2004? But if so, why did he buy it? Was it to renovate and convert into a family home- for 8 people (2 adults and 6 kids)?

I asked myself this and started wondering if perhaps he had bought it with the neighbouring ruin as well, which might make more sense for a large renovation project to accomodate 8 people. However, in 2006, he bought the huge chateau miles away. This almost certainly shifted his attention away from the Village du Dropt property plans.

Then we have Tim buying the neighbouring VdD property in 2007 - so could it be that he actually bought it off Martyn, with a view to do what Martyn had originally planned for it?

SW's statement says that the property is "on the boundary of a family member's property" and that Raymoth bought it to "prevent a developer buying it." This could be true and the implication I took was that they bought it to protect the family member's interests. But I had never considered a different interpretation, which would still make the statement above true.

What if they bought it off Martyn to stop him selling it to a developer now that he had the chateau? Maybe Raymoth saw an opportunity and had ambitions, having visited it in 2004? So Martyn agreed to sell them part of it (what they could afford) or they made him an offer to buy part of the plot?

This might also explain how they succeeded in getting it. I'm not familiar with French property sales but if a developer was expressing interest, it seems likely it had the ready money to purchase it, and in a position to outbid the competition. Meanwhile Raymoth remortgaged their house. If it was a random owner of the ruin, would it not be more likely to sell to the party offering the most money (assuming Raymoth had less)? But if the owner was Martyn and was at that point sympathetic to the Raymoth cause, it could explain how it came into their hands, and the joint renovation bonding project then never worked out.

Could the root of the family fallout lie in this somewhere?

Yes, many assumptions, questions and conjecture. Just throwing my thoughts out here, into the wind and the salt spray....

I doubt the property cost more than 5k euros. I think Tim and Sally are jealous of Martyn and his wife's successes

Chateaudiaries · 22/07/2025 11:13

I think this is unlikely to happen, most wild fires start in forested areas and a lot are started deliberately.

I’m further south than them and we don’t have to clear around our property, not sure about their area. We actually have quite a bit of rain here compared to other southern regions but friends on the Mediterranean side are obliged to keep land clear.

I’m on the Eymet (which is close to the chateau de la grande barriere) FB group group even though I don’t live there and haven’t seen any mention of the SP and/or chateau recently.

I'm not sure that you are understanding me:

"Started deliberately." you say.

Well, there is a phenomenon known as "Italian lightning" where things just blow up of their own accord.

Have you never seen Goodfellas?

True. I did consider the price, but if it was so low one must wonder why Martyn didn't just buy it himself. The properties are so close in proximity that I think it's likely that at least some point in time, at least pre Walker that they were under the same ownership. I can't understand why MW would have bought the Pigeonierre on its own that would be hard pressed to accomodate an 8 person family. Unless of course he planned to demolish and rebuild something else. Guess we'll never know.

Has this been posted already? Sixth-formers in Machynlleth make an interesting project out of TSP controversy. Not much additional news value but some impressive reporting & good to see that it's a learning opportunity...

What an inspired project - thanks for sharing. I particularly related to this: "many publishers post Salt Path have preferred authors of ‘nature-writing’ to have emotive back-stories, and finds it frustrating that this market preference has been shaped by untruths."

Jeremy sounds like Cooper .. both "childhood friend" and "financially successful in London".

I'm sticking with the theory that Cooper is a fictional character based on a mixture of Tim's brother and Tim's half-uncle...the sources of their woes (as perceived by Raymoth).

I think we need a legal correspondent.

What would happen if SalRay apologised or admitted to the embezzlement? Could she still be prosecuted?

I believe there is a statute of limitations for fraud in the UK because it is almost impossible for there to be a fair trial after 6 years. Things like bank statements and other documentation will no longer be available so the victim could cherry pick evidence to keep. NB I am not suggesting that has or could happen in this case, just explaining the reasoning behind the time limit.

The embezzlement was originally reported to the police within 6 years but obviously we are long past the time limit now.

Would the time bar still apply if there was an admission of guilt by way of an apology?

Although I assume if it did go to court, she would retract it and argue that she felt under pressure from the media to apologise.

Where I live there are a lot of people like that, they remind me of the girl in Pulp’s Common People. They’re always really happy to hold their hands out in order to spend their own time on more esoteric, fulfilling, natural or artistic pursuits; cleaning, cooking, applying for mortgages and so on are for other people to do. For some people, the ‘freedom’ to live as they please doesn’t account for other people- they’re ‘supporting cast’ members in the important lives.

I think SalRay is good at evoking a feeling, sympathy, and at creating a picture with words. Nearly at the end of TWS, I’ve found it a bit annoying in parts but have wanted to keep reading. Like TSP. But in this book it’s wees that she has an obsession with, rather than poos 😂

We have had a couple of legal eagles along the way on these threads. Hopefully they'll pop back up again at some point, as long as we don't all start PM'ing them about our wills and boundary disputes. 😁

I'm a hiker (most of the LDPS in the UK and many in Europe) and also a writer (as yet unplublished!) - 300 page account of a walk from Wiltshire to Rome on the Via Francigena entitled 'On a Wing and a Prayer' which coincidentally features a peregrine falcon at the start (but not the end!) of the book!

@DisappointedReader “I think we need a legal correspondent.”

I was a commercial property lawyer. It that was 25 years ago and I wasn’t great tbh 😅. Happy to offer opinions but don’t feel qualified for the esteemed correspondent title.

Interestingly, I have seen many people lose homes or cases due to bad decisions so I’m not sure I would have necessarily thought that the stated circumstances were odd but I only read the book with the benefit of hindsight.

The law really doesn’t dish out justice - I should know, I used to own a flat with a nightmare freeholder. Never mind, I thought, the law is on my side, I’ll just demonstrate my superior legal knowledge and all will be well. 17 years of battles and turmoil to finally rid myself of the nightmare. I also know property lawyers who had endowment mortgages, possibly one of the worst investments one can make and they should have known better!

I am now a gardener so maybe I can be, er, horticultural correspondent now the wild pooing slot has been taken 😉
