Made to feel awkward for asking Nursery to use own nappies

SunSeaLover · 18/07/2025 18:51

DD has been at nursery for a few weeks now and I feel that the ‘cheap’ nappies they use are contributing to her having nappy rash. I politely asked at the reception earlier if from Monday, I can bring in the nappies she usually wears at home and they essentially said it would prove too challenging to keep track of and therefore they couldn’t accommodate this . They said no one else has ‘complained’ (I didn’t complain and was perfectly polite).

I felt really awkward and as if they felt I was being difficult. This surely isn’t that hard a request to support?

That's a very reasonable request.

steff13 · 18/07/2025 18:55

I'm surprised that you don't have to bring your own already. Here in the US it's common for you to bring your own diapers. And they never struggle to keep track of which diapers belong to whom.

Motomum23 · 18/07/2025 18:55

Just tell them your dd clearly has an allergy to the nappy they currently use as it's causing her to develop a rash - they cannot refuse that (and BTW it would not be difficult to keep track of who's nappy is who's)

ScrewedByFunding · 18/07/2025 18:55

I guess they will need to make a space for your nappies at the changing station and then remember each time that your child needs a different nappy. Not impossible but I understand why they dont want to start that otherwise they'll have everyone starting individual requests.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 18/07/2025 18:58

Well you can’t just leave her to keep getting nappy rash, so either they accommodate you or you change nursery. I’m questioning the ethics of a nursery who would prioritise their convenience over a babies well being.

crumpet · 18/07/2025 18:58

Tell them you’ll write your DD’s name on the nappies with a sharpie so that it will be easy to tell

SnugMintFawn · 18/07/2025 19:01

YANBU! My nursery uses Sainsbury’s own brand nappies but they clearly said when we joined that if we weren’t happy with those we could provide our own. I’d find it a bit of a red flag that they can’t keep track of who needs different nappies… presumably they have to keep track of individual nappy creams, sun creams etc?!!

Most nurseries in the UK ask you to bring your own
Each child at my kids' nursery had a basket with nappies, wipes, cream and spare clothes.
Really not tricky

When my LB was at a childminder she used her own nappies, they gave him bad rashes so I supplied my own and she was happy and managed to use them but still use her own nappies on the other children she minded.

My son is at a nursery now and toilet trained but when he was in nappies everyone supplied their own nappies and wipes and just wrote our children's names on them in sharpie

Insist on them using your nappies, its not fair on your little one to be sore from rashes, they can easily use your nappies they are just being difficult

JackJarvisEsq · 18/07/2025 19:15

I’d also be wary that communal nappy cream is being used. That’s a huge no no

FrostiesAreCornflakesForPeopleWhoCantFaceReality · 18/07/2025 19:16

They’re being awkward. Ridiculously so. It’s quite common for babies/toddlers to use one brand of nappies/wipes over another due to nappy rash. When my older 2 went to nursery they had to have their own supply of nappies, wipes and formula as did all the other babies/toddlers. Each pack was labelled and kept in their own little basket/cupboard space. It’s not that difficult.

Corgi2023 · 18/07/2025 19:20

That's a big red flag to me. Very unreasonable of the nursery not to accommodate that request. Is it a big chain of nurseries by any chance? Our nursery asks us to bring our own and they have spare ones they use.

Anewuser · 18/07/2025 19:21

Of course they should use your nappies if you’ve requested it.

If your child had a medical need they would need to do it, so this shouldn’t be any different. At special needs schools, parents send their children in with their own nappies. These are labelled and the correct ones used on each child.

Surely, they must realise children have different needs, such as food intolerances, eczema cream, etc. If they aren’t able to accommodate use of your own nappies, I would worry about what else they are missing.

Lafufufu · 18/07/2025 19:22

Very reasonable

Most nurseries ask you to supply and they have a box for each child.

Yeah all three of my kids went to a different daycare and it was like that at each one of them. Each kid had a little plastic bin with their stuff in it so when it was time to change them they just got out the bin for that kid.

Yeah I've worked in various childcare settings and I've never known a nursery to provide the nappies. How do they accommodate different sizes?

JMSA · 18/07/2025 19:27

It’s a reasonable request for sure. If they won’t play ball and you want to continue using this nursery, I would send her in each morning with Sudocrem lathered over her nappy area. This should keep her rash-free.

We've been to 2 nurseries and both have supplied nappies from baby room through to older toddlers before potty training. One used Asda and the other Tesco nappies. It’s quite normal.

OK it's quite normal to you. Just saying I've never heard of it in my 20 years as a nursery nurse.

AutumnBump · 18/07/2025 19:38

Have you asked your child’s key worker? It is a very reasonable and normal request-especially when your child is getting a rash. It may be that whoever was on reception doesn’t work in the room your daughter is in.

I would also check what nappy cream they use in case that is irritating her skin. And also how long she goes between changes. We found in hot weather our daughter needed to be changed even when her nappy wasn’t full.

There's fair fewer sizes than there will be different children, they just have some of each size.

Strawberrryfields · 18/07/2025 20:01

Perfectly reasonable request. She’s having a reaction to the nappies. It effectively sounds like an allergy which I’m sure they’d accommodate if it was food, drink, suncream - why not nappies? Like others have said our nurseries has always had each child with their own cubby/ basket.

SunflowerLife · 18/07/2025 19:24

They have a pile of size 1s, 2s, 3s etc and take one from whichever pile a baby needs. The staff will know which baby is in which size, or there will be a list by the changing station, or they will look at the baby.

Both mine had nappies supplied (they are 26 and 16), though part way through DS2's nursery years they did switch to us bringing them in.

Groundhogday2025 · 18/07/2025 20:07

Absolutely not unreasonable. All parents provide the nappies and wipes at DD’s nursery. They have a little box/caddy thing for every child labelled with their name that they keep them in and grab the caddy when they go to change the child.
Maybe they are worried you’ll ask for a discount by providing your own but ultimately it’s your child and if she’s getting nappy rash and you’ve said you want to use your own nappies that’s your choice. DD kept getting nappy rash when she first joined, one time it was really bad and I was very firm that they needed to change her every hour whilst it healed and use nappy cream at each change (I don’t think they were before that). They accepted that and listened to my instructions and we’ve never had any issues since bar a tiny bit of redness on the odd occasion.

At the end of the day YOU/ DD are the customer. I’d be looking for a new nursery if they won’t play ball on such a basic request. It’s hardly a diva request and I would lose trust in them if it were me if I’m honest.

NeedToAskPlease · 18/07/2025 20:10

My DS reacted to his nursery nappies. They asked which ones l used at home.... and they supplied them instead!
