Made to feel awkward for asking Nursery to use own nappies

DD has been at nursery for a few weeks now and I feel that the ‘cheap’ nappies they use are contributing to her having nappy rash. I politely asked at the reception earlier if from Monday, I can bring in the nappies she usually wears at home and they essentially said it would prove too challenging to keep track of and therefore they couldn’t accommodate this . They said no one else has ‘complained’ (I didn’t complain and was perfectly polite).

I felt really awkward and as if they felt I was being difficult. This surely isn’t that hard a request to support?

I am literally the most chilled out parent in the universe and never the one to go in or make requests, bt this just sounds bizarre! If your kid has a skin reaction to one type of nappy (very common in a lot of children) surely it makes sense to use what you know works. It can't be hard to store some of yours marked with your child's name...
FWIW in my son's nursery you had to bring your own! They had spares if you forgot or ran out but it was the norm to send him in on Monday with a new pack.

The nursery I work for will record any child's specific care needs in their care plan, and keep a list of each child and any variations in their nappy changing routine in the changing room. If a child requires a specific brand of nappy, wet wipe, or cream, then this is kept in a box (clearly labelled with the child's name) and stored in the changing unit cupboard. We do ask parents to provide alternative brands if they wish for us to use them, but other than that it's an easily-fulfilled request. I'd be concerned that they aren't taking a potential allergy seriously, tbh.

Huge red flag.

Standard practice at my son’s nursery for all the children to have their own nappies, cream, wipes etc.

If they can manage children having different dietary requirements they can manage your child using her own nappies.

Have you asked your child’s key worker? It is a very reasonable and normal request-especially when your child is getting a rash. It may be that whoever was on reception doesn’t work in the room your daughter is in.

I would also check what nappy cream they use in case that is irritating her skin. And also how long she goes between changes. We found in hot weather our daughter needed to be changed even when her nappy wasn’t full.

Do you normally wait until her nappy is full before changing her?!?

Some of the staff at nursery were! They would obviously change a poo straight away but the wee nappies it seemed they would change only when it was wet. We found her skin was so sensitive and couldn’t breathe in nappies in hot weather at one point her first summer at nursery she needed changing no more than every two hours (even if the nappy was dry) to keep her from getting sore.

Normal request I used to give own wipes and own creams too

Ivesaidenough · 18/07/2025 22:22

I would just check which wipes they are using, as my brother reacted to the cheapo ones, my mum had to switch to water and cotton wool. So might be the wipes rather than the nappies.

FancyCatSlave · 18/07/2025 22:23

We used cloth nappies and wipes and our nursery managed that!

YANBU

This is a totally normal request. We had to supply our own nappies and cream for exactly this reason. Our nursery was even happy to use cloth nappies I supplied. Babies have reactions to all sorts of things. One of mine got a reaction to the nursery suncream so we had to send in our own (stupidly expensive) stuff. Totally normal and not a criticism of them.

Most nurseries in the UK ask you to bring your own
Each child at my kids' nursery had a basket with nappies, wipes, cream and spare clothes.
Really not tricky

Was going to say this at ours the kids have their own lidded and labelled storage nappy bags are the only thing nursery supply, I’d have thought it was easier due to different sizes/brands used. They just msg when nappies/wipes are running low

The first nursery I looked at for DD1 (many many years ago) refused when I asked this question - we were using washables. Subsequent nurseries (second one closed) not a problem - the change room had a wall with large pigeonholes for each child's nappies. I just made sure they had a fresh bin and set of nappies each morning, used liners so all they had to do was throw the whole nappy into the bin and then I'd sort them out at home. Easy peasy.
