I may be late to the party, but recently discovered it and wonder what others use it for?

I've got my mid 80's old mother hooked on it! She's always enjoyed using her iPad - now we've downloaded the ChatGPT app onto it - its so simple to use that she's managed it no problem and is off having chats with it about her plants, flowers, and her vegetable garden. Bloody marvellous but I still have to sit and listen to an itinerary of every bastard plant she has watered.

GentleIron · 20/07/2025 01:21

Oh my days, give over, @MyWarmOchreHare . Stop it already with telling me what didn't happen and what I'm like -you're something else. I'm a bloody teacher; I'm all about things which lighten workload and make things easier. If any particular group should have unbridled access to time-saving technology, teachers get my vote. But not at any cost.

Uiik · 20/07/2025 01:38

Lots of things, meal plans, to help me with little scripts when I have to phone someone, at work for quick images and emails.

Anononony · 20/07/2025 02:12

I use it to teach me things, like walk through how things work. Particularly related to business, I've recently had it teach me the ins and outs of gpsr regulations and what's expected of me, and how I would go about approaching chains with my products, it even gave me a list of relevant chains, how many stores each have and what they focus on (natural products, British made products etc), and it's told me what sort of things a chain would expect and what I should include.

It's been great for helping me understand these sorts of processes that I'm guessing you'd learn in a business degree or something? I have no idea

Advice from leading AI researcher Sasha Luccioni:

NoSoupForU · 18/07/2025 14:07

Absolutely nothing. I had a play about with it and found the information it returned was vague, inaccurate and difficult to sift through.

I can see how it would be useful for things like recipes if you feed it a list of ingredients you have.

When did you last use it? It's the exact opposite to what I found.

NautilusLionfish · 20/07/2025 08:16

NoSoupForU · 18/07/2025 14:18

Evidently the environmental impact of AI doesn't matter to people when they want to use it to cut corners or twat about making fake images.

I'm horrified that teachers are using this shit for lesson plans too.

What about environmental impact of Google, phones, all Internet. Besides many websites and companies using ai. Will you stop using them all?

Genuine question cos I do wonder. And even crypto currencies impact is horrendous

NautilusLionfish · 20/07/2025 08:20

I use it to double check documents I have already analysed
I made a story to teach kid phonics and aslef it to sketch pic to go with it
Advise on how to approach a new art medium or art piece
Analyse and advise on work out session
Coding
Identifying seed pods and plants

I must say I use the free version and 70% of the time I have to fix it's response. And there was a day it was so crap on a simple task so it's fat from the perfect solution

I suspect these people have always existed ironically social media has just revealed them to the world.

Yes, people have always existed. But there are multiple studies into the impact and effect of smartphones and social media on the brain. We know they dumb people down and yet we continue to not only embrace it but to actively pursue more of it.

NautilusLionfish · 20/07/2025 08:26

Maxorias · 19/07/2025 01:04

I use it for cooking recipes. Asked today how to make pizza dough (I've made it many times but always forget the exact proportions of each ingredients). You do have to read it with a critical eye, as sometimes it suggests wrong amounts. So I wouldn't recommand for a beginner. But for someone who knows their stuff and just needs a reminder, it's great.

A genuine question: why not Google or youtube for this?

NautilusLionfish · 20/07/2025 08:31

GentleIron · 19/07/2025 14:25

Follow-on question: What are you doing to compensate for the environmental impact of your use of A1?

I can't bring myself to use it. When brainstorming about how to generate a bespoke backdrop image to be projected during our school play a few weeks ago, my TA suggested putting some prompts into ChatGPT. One boy quietly got up, went over to the sink and half filled a cup of water. He brought it to me and said: "Please don't do it, it'll use about this much water. Think about all the people using it all the time. Let's not make it worse." I could have hugged him.

What are you doing about the slave labour mining rare earths for your phone and iPad? Oh and water use for Internet and Google?

I am concerned about water use and more. Am just not sure what to do about it. Am also in a world where I have many expenses and not enough pay and need to work harder and harder for less and less. I can stretch myself any further so it feels, selfish as it is, lessening my workload is beneficial. But yes, at what costs and who pays the largest of that cost. It's a question I ask myself over so many things about modern life

NautilusLionfish · 20/07/2025 08:36

Interesting. I asked someone if they are worried about ai impact on environment how best to mitigate and if they use Google, Internet, phones cos they are all incredibly damaging to the environment, and the many companies that use ai. Mumsnet has hidden my post to have a look. Very strange

BobShark · 20/07/2025 08:50

I also have been using it to understand myself a bit more, for example my relationship with my ex/coparent have become quite high conflict in the past year, so I’m stepping through scenarios and describing how this is affecting me, and asking for suggestions on how to better manage the conflict and my own mental health. It has been surprisingly insightful, considerations that I hadn’t thought of, and the act of writing it all down alone is quite cathartic.
i have a real interest in human behaviour and interaction so it’s been very interesting, and it always ends with, would you like to explore xyz more and can I suggest trying xyz.

Whu · 20/07/2025 08:53

Sometimes if I’ve forgotten an ingredient or picked up random items I send it a picture of what I’ve got and it turns it into a recipe.
you can do it with a weeks worth of shopping too! It will create meals out of your items.

Sometimes it will help me draft emails etc.
Its sorted all my supplements out for me.
It identifies plants and insects for the kids. It’s helped me make sense of a tricky situation in a very clear way. It explains complex news events in a clear and easy to understand way.

Occasionally if I’m very bored I’ll tell it crazy dramatic scenarios and ask for its thoughts on them. It’s amazing how empathetic it is programmed to be.

BobShark · 20/07/2025 08:54

I also stepped up into more responsibility at work, so I often use co pilot to provide me with 3 types of framework for delivering an xyz strategy, I can then do my own research from there, I find it’s helpful for a starting point.

it’s really important how you word your prompts, in order to get the best results

Countrylife2002 · 20/07/2025 08:56

Used it to write a letter to a neighbour who has been doing something very antisocial for years - despite my complaints.
It worked !

I don't use google personally, I switched to Ecosia to support their tree-planting programme. I have a phone that is 8 years old and recently deleted some little used apps to extend its shelf life. I don't buy random shite online. I delete emails and unsubscribe from newsletters. When I stream, I lower the image quality. I am not perfect, but I do try and be mindful of my internet use. I have to use it a lot for work but I certainly don't use it frivolously.

You say posting on Mumsnet.

TheLudditesWereRight · 20/07/2025 12:17

Yep. Like I say, I am not perfect.

smallsilvercloud · 20/07/2025 12:22

I use it for work, gives me ideas for emails, writing, for personal use I research business ideas, advice on property, finances, holiday research, meal plans, weight loss, walking routes, travelling. Comparing pricing, local company research.

Jambolaya · 20/07/2025 14:07

I’m interested to understand how people using it for work are navigating the confidentiality issues.

I work in a sector where it’s been made clear by my employer that we do not use ChatGPT for anything. We have a closed AI system we can use (that they developed and paid for) but no data can be put into something like ChatGPT.

I appreciate all sectors are different.

Perfectlystill · 21/07/2025 06:50

All the time. For work, travel advice and inspo, what to do when my dog hurt his eye, ideas for my daughter's gap year, to summarise long and badly written emails sent by my boss.

Ode to ChatGPT: A Mumsnet Confession
I’m Disco Dancing Doris, hear me type,
On Mumsnet threads, I share my hype.
While others bake or knit with flair,
I chat with bots without a care.
Some ask, “What’s ChatGPT to you?”
A time-waster, but oh so true!
I prompt it for a silly rhyme,
To giggle through the daily grind.
While laundry piles and dishes wait,
I’m crafting poems that captivate.
No Nobel Prize or Booker win,
Just verses that induce a grin.
So if you see me online late,
Know I’m with ChatGPT, my mate.
Together, we compose with glee,
A duo of pure poetry
