To not attend A&E?

One foot and leg swelled up completely out of the blue the other night, skin indented when pressed. Saw the GP yesterday morning, they measured and said the leg is 3cm larger than the other due to swelling. Recommend A&E. I didn’t attend as severely anxious around lots of people.
Leg seems to have gone down, no indenting or anything this morning. DH really wants me to get it checked out and is bothering me about it.

AIBU to think it was just something random and that it would be time wasting for me to go to A&E today given the symptoms have gone?

How are you getting on op?

PassMeAGripPlease · 19/07/2025 05:13

On my way home now. My leg has swollen again but blood test was normal so have been sent home.

Thank you again every one.

Well done to you - at least you have some reassurance. But a shame it's swollen again Sad

I don’t feel much reassurance to be honest. I saw the doctor for less than 60 seconds, he just glanced at my legs, went to check blood results and sent me home. He didn’t touch them or say what else might be causing it.

I suppose I’ll just have to go back to the GP when I can manage to go out again.

At least you got it checked out ,so very very well done , maybe some sleep now and rest, as you have anxiety, l got over mine don't give up you did great really thinking of you . Well done Maybe a rest for a day or two .

Frustrating that you didn't get more from the doctor, but you should be so proud of yourself for going to a&e, well done!

anyolddinosaur · 19/07/2025 06:45

You were unreasonable not to go to a&e when your gp wanted you to go and your husband should have been more insistent. But you went, it didnt kill you, you can go the gp again.

Until you have better advice move around when you can and if you have to sit raise your feet. That will reduce the swelling and the risk of skin damage.

Would they still check out the leg even though no symptoms today? I’m absolutely dreading going, especially if I’m just going to wait for 9+hours to be told to go back to GP. Would the swelling have gone if it had been a clot?

It’s worth ringing 111 instead and getting an actual appointment in the hospital? Definitely sounds like you need to get this checked out. Have you been bitten? It could be cellulitis?

Iamfree · 19/07/2025 06:58

op, I don’t know your financial situation but I had symptoms and didn’t want to go to A&E (no anxiety but didn’t want to wait. I found a place in London that was doing a Doppler scan, called them and had it done about 25minutes after seeing the GP. It was about £250-300 but well worth it. Is this something you would consider? I can give you the name of clinics, mostly open at the weekend.

I’d take some aspirin until you can see your GP (as long as you are able to take it of course). I’m actually stunned that they didn’t scan you. Did you not ask any questions?

aspirin features nowhere in DVT treatment guidelines. If the d-dimer test is negative then you can be reassured there isn’t a DVT (its main value is when it’s negative). If the d-dimer is positive then a scan may be needed to work out if it’s raised because of a clot or any of the other things that can put it up.

As you do not leave the house how much are you moving around? Could it be linked to not being very mobile?

Thanks for this, I am happy to be educated and I’m glad things have improved in terms of diagnosis. My experience was many years back, I was in my early 20’s and I’m in my 50’s now. The diagnostic procedure was absolute brutal (taking blood from my inner thigh) and I’ve never forgotten it. I had a warfarin drip and was in hospital for over a week and on aspirin for a month afterwards. I appreciate your updated knowledge!

I would speak to your gp and ask him to rule out things going on with your kidneys and your heart
