This is stupid and a ploy to get more votes

It’s very disingenuous to try to deny that many teachers have an agenda.

Perhaps look at the aims and affiliations of some teaching unions.

I'm amused that you think teachers have the energy to spare for an "agenda" 😂 What on earth

I am quite enjoying the fear from those on the right. Oh, the flapping and screeching!

Yes especially as they cheered when voter ID bought in, done to make it harder for certain groups of the electorate to vote.

ie Bus pass ok for ID, Student ID card .... Not ok.

pucksack · 18/07/2025 09:17

a ploy to get more votes

is this a new thing?

GasPanic · 18/07/2025 09:17

PandoraSocks · 17/07/2025 22:15

Doubt it.

16/17 year olds in Wales have had the vote for Senedd (and local) elections since 2021. Minimum age for jury service is still 18 here.

Edited

Is there any rationale behind that discrepancy ?

pucksack · 18/07/2025 09:17

The frontal lobe is not “fully formed “ until 25

Clearly some are never fully formed...

’Flapping and screeching’ now, you ramp it up in each post.

Bring it all on. Let the youngsters vote for an idealistic party on the left, why not. Now they could have a better choice than Labour.

Another who has a terrible opinion of their own children and of teachers.

I quite like unions. Unless you don't like workers' rights? The fact that it's those on the right who object to this change tells me it's the right thing to do.

Sometimes governments appoint head teachers as social mobility tsars

pucksack · 18/07/2025 09:19

are you saying 87-year-olds are selfish and will vote in their own interest?

Who doesn't vote in their own interest?

GasPanic · 18/07/2025 09:17

Is there any rationale why over the 75s can vote BUT cannot be on a Jury?

By your logic, the over 75s should have the vote removed.

Obviously. If you extend the franchise more people have the vote.

Absolutely. Why not? As I have said several times, you can't have your cake and eat it. If 16 and 17 year olds aren't fit to vote, neither are older people with dementia, people with learning difficulties, people in active addiction, people with major mental ill health. So let's take the vote off them, shall we?

They are free to vote for whoever they like, its not for you to say who they should vote for.

Angus Crocker, 18yo, our new Reform councillor.....unless you think Reform are on the left of politics, perhaps you do....

Labour have the mandate to introduce this change as it was in their manifesto, not yet heard the Tories will reverse this change if they win in 2029.

They have a choice, nobody is forcing them.

We don't have an Australian style compulsory voting system.

That may well be the case.

But I'm not interested in that because it doesn't answer the question. It's just misdirection.

An inconvenient fact so let’s ignore it.

Yeh people will vote for who they want including Reform and further left. Let’s go.

Fearfulsaints · 18/07/2025 09:29

My original thought was its confusing to have different ages for being an adult.

But ive decided that what matters is the age for the thing you are doing.

Voting isn't actually that complex. You are picking an individual you want to go to parliament to represent you and we already let plenty of people who don't get that concept have a vote. There's no rule you have to have read or understood thier manifesto. Ive never voted for the winner in any election apart from one police thing. Where I picked the only female candidate because she was a women. She turned out ok as it happens.

No, its exactly the right answer, you first mentioned Jury service min age, as a reason not to widen the vote, yet are perfectly happy with the 75 yo max at the other end of the age range.

Presumably because over 75s are far more likely to vote Tory?

Goose and Gander spring to mind here.....

If you think teachers will influence votes, why do you think that danger suddenly disappears on people's 18th birthdays?
